    Toe Brakes

Hope someone can help me. I'm looking for info, drawings, parts manual etc that gives details on the toe brake installation on one of the early series cubs. The aircraft is the PA-18 105 Special. Does anyone know where I can get a parts manual for that aircraft?Unavair doesn't have one. Also Piper drawing # SK 449 is supposed to show among other things, details of the toe brake installation. Would any of you happen to have that drawing or know where I might get one. I've called Piper to see if they have that drawing, and they said they'd get back to me, but they were decidedly not real interested in anything having to do with a 60+ year old aircraft.

You could try Cub Club. I know they have (or used to have) a 337 for the -12 toe brakes, so they might have the Dwg.

Paul, there have been LOTS of discussions about toe brakes here over the years. I had a 105 Special myself. Use the search function here in the forums and you might be able to find more of what you are looking for.

I had 197T, what tango cub do you have?

I don't have a tango cub. My wife has a '57 supercub anda '52 Cessna 170B and I have a PA-12 in which I'm considering installing toe brakes. The reason I'm trying to find the toe brake info for the tango cubs is that our FSDO up here, (AK) is a lot more amenable to field approving an installation that is based on a system from another certified aircraft, especially if it is from the same aircraft family. I've seen all of the rhetoric back and forth about toe brakes vs heel brakes and considering that I have several hundred hours in planes with both types, my opinion is that neither is better or worse than the other. The reason I'm considering the change for the 12 is to make it a little easier for my wife to fly it. The ergonomics of the 12 are just different enough from the 18, that it just doesn't fit my wife well enough for her to feel comfortable flying it.

Me too - I fly Cubs with heel brakes and everything else including my Super D with toe brakes. I don't even think about it. I have flown four different Tango Cubs, and all I can say is these toe brakes are not good. That is why most Cub drivers do not want toe brakes - the Piper setup is simply bad news.

That said, if you find the drawings and the 105 is on the same type cert, you ought to be able to avoid the field approval process. Approved data does not need approval.

Contact Dan White at HO Aircraft. He has an STC to install toe brakes on a PA-18 using Husky look-alike parts. They would, I bet, be approved for a PA-12 based on the PA-18 STC and a field approval for the PA-12: http://www.hoaircraft.com/ , (763) 784-0490, H.O. Aircraft, Inc.

My opinion, stay away from the toe brakes in a cub. The front seat is high putting your foot at an ackward angle for the toe brakes. you wind up inadvertanely applying brakes when you don't want them. I've adjusted them as far forward as you can without hitting the firewall and they are still in the way. in a Cessna they're fine cause you sit lower in relation the toe brakes. just my opinion.
