    New Technology

    Check out this above!!

First Sporty's had an ADB gadget (Stratus) for $800 I purchased - then two months later Garmin comes out with the GDL-39 -- I whined and fussed until Sportys let me exchange the first with the second. I wanted the GDL-39 since it added Traffic Data.

Well now this one above has all that plus the attitude and horizon data (AHRS) ! So from what I can see with my Iphone and an App I purchased called "IHUD Remote" I would basically have a glass cockpit! Looks like the cost is about $1,100.

I think my head is going to explode from all this technology! It's impossible to keep up with it all! Add synthetic vision with a Garmin portable GPS like the Aera 796 which by the way is coming out with Blue tooth shortly! OMG!!! Amazing stuff!

Mike we need an App which pops up every 20 seconds and reminds pilots to look out the window!!!

The coolest thing to me about having the Garmin GDL-39 was that it wirelessly made my Iphone a serious GPS unit!! Using Garmins Pilot App. Weather is an added bonus. Traffic I have yet to see that work?

Really cool stuff there Cliff. Bill Rusk turned me on to a app. for my cell phone that I use alot. Its called ForeFlight. I think its $75. per year. I had to go on a short trip yesturday and had my phone GPS (foreflight) next to my Garman GPS and my ground speed and position were the same. I am amazed on these small phones how well they work. I was also listening to my favorite songs on my phone at the same time
If I had to pick one plane, it would be the Super Cub. Im going to build one and try to find a 180 to put in it. I will need your help. Thanks

    Cliff,

Folks keep describing these devices as "providing traffic", when in fact, NONE of them provides anything but ADS-B Out equipped aircraft. Do you have any idea how small a percentage of aircraft in the US at this point are equipped with ADS-B Out? The answer is a tiny fraction.

There is nothing wrong with providing this type of information at all, but I hate to see people refer to these things as a TIS type device, when that function is very limited in these machines.

I think the greater value of these devices at least in the near future is to provide in cockpit weather.

And, frankly, as fast as these things are hitting the market now, I'd bet the evolution of this type device has just begun. Wait a year and I'll bet there'll be significantly more capable machines out there. And, in the meantime, more GBTs installed and more aircraft operating ADS-B out.

My guess is if you just hold off a year or so Garmin will have one hell of a GPS out which bundles it all up into one, ADS-B weather, Traffic, Synthetic Vision, and AHRS! The technology is there - it's just a mater of bundling it all up into one GPS unit! I can't wait!
Bill I have both Foreflight and Garmins Pilot app on my Iphone.
I used to want an autopilot ($8,000 for certified cub), but now i'm way more interested in Synthetic Vision. That would be way cheaper and if I get into the clouds I think it would work well.

That Clarity ADS-B looks cool. One thing nice about the GDL-39 is it works right away with your existing Garmin 5xx, 6xx, 7xx. I have yet to see any traffic on my unit because as Mvivion says, only ADS-B OUT aircraft will show...unless...you are near another aircraft that has OUT/IN, you can piggyback on their signal and see the whole enchilada but only as long as you are piggybacking. I have yet to see this.

My main purpose for GDL is for the FIS-B services which I think are great.

All that stuff is fun to play with on a long flight, but it won't help me going around the tree hanging over the river, landing on the first 10 feet of the gravel bar and stopping before the big pile of stumps.

Another interesting link which compares all the various products out there! This Clarity gadget sure sounds like a must have item for this guy! Anyone want to buy my Garmin GDL-39? Used once - paid $800. Make me an offer.
