    What Not To Do

Always double and triple check what is behind that very last hole you are drilling for that little trim piece that will just make it all look good.

Choice words and a picture of how it was found were left out for the faint of heart.

    Was that line very important?

Just the rear line out of the left fuel tank going down the window post.

Rear line isn't that important--it's the front line that can be problematic!

Steve, Pulled one of those out of a Cessna 180 that the previous mechanics wrapped a split rubber fuel line over and clamped it with three ( yes 3 ) hose clamps to keep it from leaking.... The hole was perfectly in line with a screw for the interior panel.

Brian, I did that as a temporary fix while we drained the tank and then decided I better do it right.

Decided that screw didn't need to be there anyway and that I shouldn't be drilling things like that at 6 am.

The fuel system is not supposed to be vented?

  13. #13
Why didn't you just put the screw in?

watch out for the PK screw that slowly rattles into a tank or pipe. I had this happen. Fine for years because a short screw was used, then after an annual a long srew was fitted that just touched a fuel tank. must have taken a years flying before a hole appeared.

I had just arrived home from Wichita with a brand new 180 when I noticed the fuel selector handle move when the flaps were retracted. Pulled the plates off the floor to look and found two slices in the main fuel line that were cut there by the quadrant on the flap handle. Fortunately it hadn't cut though and leaked yet. There were only two landings on this plane after Cessna's flight testing.

I bet you got Cessna.s attention real fast!

Between that and the sprocket falling off of the bottom of the elevator trim screw jack on another new 180, lets just say that the Cessna tech rep was not happy with me.
