    Maine or Bust

Sitting here watching the wind blow, I got to thinking. Instead of doing the same old same old every winter, Ive never been to Maine and wouldn't mind going there. Seems like a good contingency of cubbers up there.

So seriously thinking of getting a caravan of skiplanes and head to Maine this winter, maybe sometime in January if of course we get some deep snow between now and then.

Anybody interested in going, anybody interested in putting us up for a night on the way and when we get there?
Any good skiplane capable airports along the way?

I'd vote for bust... but then again we might find FMD John there.

If you can find me a plane, I might be in for it... would be fun.

    Anything to kill enroute?

Bad choice... leave Tim off the schedule....... Maybe I can pull it off and meet you somwhere... Yes Tom,, I would think it would be a hoot to come up there... Sure would be nice not to fly over all those trees...

I'm sure we can put together a bit of fun on this end in New Hampster and Maine. The latter part of January-early February usually brings pretty good ski flying. FMD's strip is perfect and a Winter WAD is always a good time. Lots of cool places in Maine and I'm sure bunks can be found for everyone. Summer's aren't bad here, either.....

Maine is a long way from Montana Brian. I was there once in the 70's. My dad took us in his Cherokee Six to visit his sister and family who lived there for a few years. It would be a much longer trip in a Cub. I think Alaska is closer from my end of MT.

Lots of nice folks there and we ate a lot of excellent seafood too.

    Yea, what Dan said!

I will have the ski strip ready for you if you want to come up. Wolves, Coyotes and other varmits to kill here also, (Wolverine, lynx, marten, otter).

I might even have a place in the shop for Eaton if he joins you. I do have rooms for you though.

Steve you better be up for fall colors or I'll be down there to steal your tractor again. And no more crap about no trees, I have a couple of trees.

Brian ship your skis to me in Cooperstown and fly wheels to here. Adirondacks half hour North of here and on the way to Maine.

Brian - Poplar Grove (C77) near Rockford, Illinois. 2 grass runways, fuel and you have a place to stay (my house) right on the airport. Heated hangar so no need for morning preheat. You may need ski dollys (I have a set for Aeroski 2000) to get to the hangar, however.

Bill , Sounds good. (Isn't that awful close to that Wilbur guy?)

Glenn , Getting there on skis will be half the fun

Course I wouldn't want to exclude someone going on wheels

Is there a reason you want to take the long way aroung the lake? If you want to take the northern route you can count on safe ice and good snow on thousands of lakes with access to food fuel and lodging on straight skis. I'll happily play outfitter/tour guide if you want.

  21. #21
the high road was one of my options I thought of possibly on the way back, but if you are going to be tour guide, we might have to jog back up that way after Toms.

That sounds like a heck of a fun trip - was just looking at ski options a couple weeks back when weather took a dive in temp.... for a day or two with rain....

Fleming Field in South Saint Paul is ski friendly. Ski dollies are needed. Lots of floor space at my house and my wife is one great cook.

North around Michigan than south along Huron. The bays will be froze over. If the snow is as scares as it was last winter this may be your only route. There is no good way to go around Canada. The ski flying in northern Wisconsin and the U P is some of the best you will find, plan on staying a while if you come this way.

Don't count out the North East for skis.

Well, looks like two possibilities. North route out and south route back or visa versa. Might depend on who we are picking up on the way. Ohio has been in a vacuum here, so will probably have to skip over it.

From my experience the snow cover will dictate where you can and can't go, at least on straight skis. North does not mean snow, downwind of the Great lakes means snow.

ME 17 is groomed in the winter and this year I WILL be back on skis. January is a tough month up here as we usually get winds cold and a little more snow. Hope you get the 11 so if this happens I will be able to keep up. Douten

I'm going to need some skis, and a friendlier airport. One that lets you land off the pavement
