    And then there was one

My very nice PA-12 has found a new home. Having two planes was fun but I'm happy with one and feel fortunate to have such a good 180. I'm pleased that my -12 has a worthy new owner. It wasn't even for sale. Funny how things work out.

Life continues to be good. I'm going fishing. Adios.

I had no qualms when it was time to let 180-185s go, in the same way as Cubs and Champs. There comes a time when circumstances---money and missions---meet age and stronger pursuits. Cross-countries are over. It's power and long props to get into and out of little lakes where the trout are and Cessnas can't go. Nothing can take away the memories of the 180s though and you're lucky to have a good one. Regards, King

Bye bye, baby. I got a couple of fly-bys this weekend. It sure looks pretty from the ground. That's a totally new perspective for me. No regrets.

If he doesn't stop smiling he's going to pull a muscle.

And now to focus on the 180. This week it'll get new and different tires in all three positions as well as Micro VGs. As long as it's ready to head out fishing on Friday. My world doesn't stop because I sold the -12.

ya he was posting go-pro videos on facebook from his 6am takeoff and practice session the morning after he bought it..... ....my customer from 1996 rebuild, bought this -12 from Stewart (which I covered & helped finish in 2006 or 7?) brand loyalty or? he says its a much better performer than his other one... trying to figure out why, maybe the short engine mount??

I consider that airplane a legacy plane. It has a lot of my old friend Marty in it and I cherish my memories of those days in the hangar building it. Ditto for you, Mike. I'm very pleased it'll remain close. And I'm ecstatic that the flight reviews have been so positive. I find that very satisfying. To my friends like Crash, Mike, Terry, etc who made such positive comments in the days leading up to the sale, thank you. I'm humbled. It was a heck of a ride. Now it's time for the next chapter.

Everyone, I will stop the guessing game. As a few know, I had an accident earlier this month, and totaled my beloved PA-12 that I have owned, cared for and loved for 34 years. I had over 3,500 hours in that PA-12, and it has taken me far and wide to some very great places over those years. I grieved for it afterwards like I lost my kid.

I was told as a teenager when I was learning to fly from really great flying mentors that "Airplanes are disposable, People are not". I disposed of that -12 on that day, and keep my 7,000 hr + flying record of not putting a scratch on a person intact. As much as I will miss that plane, I am proud to have the latter record for a flying legacy.

I am in the last throws of finalizing things after the accident, and will tell my story at some future time. There are definitely things to learn from it, and I want to share it for the good of the cause, to Supercub pilots and other back-country pilots alike. Now is not the time yet. I had several other life changing events happening in this month too, but am on the upswing. One of the good things was that I was fully insured, and AVEMCO my insurer handled this unbelievably well. I will expand on that later.

In any case, I had met SB just this spring, although we had been web friends here on SC.org for years. He had mentioned when we were playing with camera mounts one morning that he felt bad that he didn't have the time to fly his -12, and he had tried to sell it before without sucess. I cold-called him one day after my accident when I was cruising around Lake Hood looking at a few planes that were for sale. I had oogled over this -12 for quite some time, knew the mechanics that built it, including Mike Skup that is MCS Mike here. Mike had built my -12 in 96-97, and some of our ideas had found their way to SB's rebuild. But there is much more to SB's plane, it truly is a very very special PA-12. So, I feel very fortunate that SB allowed his son to leave the house so to speak, and he is coming to a very loving and caring home. One of the very best things is that SB and I have become even better friends, and we are more a family of friends/mechanics/friends that 53M lives. I know it must be hard for him, I had gone through a similar situation when I found myself with a Cessna 185 and my -12 and could not justify having both. I sold the 185, and kept the -12 as it better fit my mission. SB went the other way, a good choice for him but difficult to know for sure I can imagine.

Some have asked if I am going to change my screen alias, or email to reflect my new plane. Not for now is my answer, I am not ready yet, maybe a sign of respect.

BTW, this new to me -12 is by far the finest I have ever had a chance to be around, and certainly the best one I have flown. And I have flown alot of them. I put 5.7 hours on it Saturday and Sunday, and going to fly it very regularly and continue my Alaska lifestyle that is built around a capable bush plane like a modified PA-12. And yes, I cannot keep from smiling or calling SB and sharing my enthusiasm for my new son.

Here we are with the FAA title transfer in our hands on Friday, a fine summer day to boot...

And yes MCS Mike, I was out at 6am on Saturday!

Congratulations Mike. What a beautiful 12 and from what I saw in the video, a great performer too. On to the next 3,500 hrs to add to your flying legacy.
