It seems to me that if you can fly the plane with the door and window open without any special paper work, then it would make no difference if they were completely removed. There would be no difference in the flight characteristics.

I agree but would like some type of paper work to make it legal
It's legal in the PA 12 but you need a new weight and balance paperwork (one for door on, one for door off) that has to be done by an A&P. I'll check my paperwork when I get home from KOSH and see if it applies to the 18 as well, but it may have only applied to the cubs without the split door.

I think the J-3 can be converted to a 2POLM per the type certificate. There are those who will tell you you cannot fly with the door/ window open. Here in Socal we consider it illegal and immoral to fly with it closed. With the proper upper door latch, why would you need to take the doors off?
AC 105-2C addresses parachute jumping and appendix 2 is a list of aircraft that may be operated with the door removed for parachute jumping. The PA 12 and PA 18 are included. But AC 105-2C has been canceled by AC 105-2D and the appendix was left out. And it is for skydiving. Maybe it's a place to start. Some aircraft like the AeroCommander 100-180 have it in the Type Certificate that one or more doors may be removed for flight. jrh
