    Interior materials & Burn regs

Oh boy, I see another reference to burn certs in the 12v power socket thread. And more in the Oregon Aero seat cushion thread. Interior fabrics and burn cert requirements may be the least understood common maintenance issue in the GA fleet. Here's a good article for aircraft owners to read.

    But wait... there's more!

most of us are working on CAR3 certified planes, and do not have to do the part 23 stuff, just meet the CAR3 3.48, 3.388 stuff by doing a burn test

specifically 3.388 states material must be "flash resitant" which is defined in 3.48(d) as "flash resistant material means material which will not burn violently when ignited"

grab a piece of scrap, try to ignite it, log it per the above if you care...... it don't say nothing about requiring you to log it........ just that the material meets the spec......

now on this same subject of CAR3 or part 23 requirements,
the seat cussions fall back to the original certification basis of CAR3....
but say adding an alternator to your old cub will fall under part 23 (and you MUST meet ALL the part 23 requirements for its installation, including the low voltage light) BECAUSE there was no alternators back in CAR days, or so I was told by my PMI......

So, basically, any leather would work with a simple log-entry?

What if one wanted to install a (perhaps removable?) "lumbar pillow" inside the seat back - you know, one of those things with a handpump - in between two pieces of leather or in an internal pocket?

    S-LSA doable? Part 23? Car3?
