Thread: Left sliding window ?

    Left sliding window ?

Has any one made the left sliding window start up by the front windshield tube. Get rid of the fixed glass by the front throttle. Would there be any pros or cons of doing this? I would think it would make taking pictures a lot easer and get a little more air on a hot day.

    Thanks Bryan

Covered or uncovered fuselage---mine was covered when I did it. One of the best mods I have done to the plane for my purposes (fishspotting). Just made life easier not having to lean back all the time to look out an open window.

I'm rebuilding my cub now that's one of the reasons to be able to look out the window easer. Adding all the mods. making it heavy Mark I still have to get the thrust line mod from you. Do you have any pic. Of your window to see how you finished the forward side.

    Thanks Bryan

I've done that mod on a couple fish spotters. have 337 field approval for it in my files.

As there was no welding and non structural it was just a minor alteration on mine(I think--can't remember all the paperwork). I will try and get some pics for you Bryan.

Have it on mine and love it! Just removed the post and installed window track and spot welded it to the frame. No more looking around the post.

This is a great mod. When Russ Munson decided to buy a Husky, he insisted that Aviat do this mod on his new Husky. Not structural, just remove the small piece of vertical channel, and install channel on windshield frame. Aviat did this for Russ, who was at the time a staff photographer for Flying Magazine, and did a lot of aerial photo work. I don't think Aviat has built an airframe with anything else since. Its a great feature, you can photograph or look out to the front left without looking around "stuff". I assumed it would create a lot of buffeting in the cockpit when the window was slid aft, but it doesn't. Good ventilation, good visibility. I've wondered many times why more Cub types haven't gone this direction during rebuilds.

This sounds interesting. Does anyone have any photos? I'm trying to wrap my mind around what size the two panels would have to be to allow the front panel to slide back far enough. Where do you attach the 'knob' to slide the window back? Is the idea to get a bigger and better window opening, or to just get rid of the post in front of your face?

Jim, both, actually. The forward sliding window can just be made longer, or I suppose you could make both windows a little longer.

In essence, all you're doing is removing that small, non structural vertical post that's just forward of the throttle, and moving the forward window channel forward to the left side windshield diagonal frame member, which is structural.

If you have the fabric off, all it would take is cutting out that forward side window pillar, welding a new forward window channel to the left windshield diagonal, and fabricate a new forward sliding window with a diagonal front edge.

For a handle, a plexiglass block glued to the front window, or one through bolted.

Youll be amazed how much that Improves the view and taking photos out the window is now easy. No need to open the right side door/window and muss up your back sweaters hair.

    Sorry, no pictures.

I was not successful in loading the photos here so I put them in my photos in the photo gallery. I know it looks strange where the old fwd window was but this was done on a covered fuselage.

I cut out the old lower window channel and fwd vertical piece. started fitting the new lower channel*in it seams to want to sit in a little from the longeron to line up with the windshield frame. Not sure if I should move it out to the edge of the longeron and the channel going up the windshield frame move it out the thickness of the plexiglass windshield? then the new out side trim piece might look better. Can I fill out a 337 work done IAW AC 43-13 or do I need someones 337 on this Window mod. For approved data?

    Thanks Bryan
