    History Channel | Mountain Men

I saw a new show the other night on the History Channel called Mountain Men. Pretty interesting. There were a few scenes w some Super Cub flying in Alaska. I live in NC so it was interesting seeing some of the pretty scenes near the Cherokee National Forest.

Yes, how about Marty? The guy with the Super cub. Is he for real? Is he on this web site? Does anyone know him? Does he ever cut his hair?
When a prang seems inevitable, endeavor to strike the softest, cheapest object in the vicinity, as slowly and gently as possible.— advice given to RAF pilots during W.W.II.

Marty is for real. Several years ago he was featured on, I believe it was Field and Stream, as the World's toughest trapper. His brother Jeff is an airplane mechanic and he rebuilt my wings on the Torch. Marty helped him during the rebuild of my wings. I have met him and these guys are real. They are super nice guys to deal with.

The last show, when he walks out of his cabin door, there is a Supercub.org calendar on the wall. Last December page was open. I paused the show and got the calendar and showed my wife.. LOOK,, he is a supercub org member,, maybe,,, or at least has the calendar.

His brother Jeff is a member, so maybe it was a gift? I like where he is talking about not missing modern conveniences like running water and electricity as he is flying around with a late model Garmin GPS, running a chainsaw, and cruising on a nice snow machine. Looks like he is living the dream!

and no phone to be called by Jenks Tampon sales guys durring dinner!

If a sled is not nice (dependable) out in the brush, it is more than worthless, it is dangerous. It only takes a short time to get 40 miles from home on these things, and when they quit, it is trouble...

I will look for the show, sounds interesting... I will also try and get a calendar to Parker on the Gold Rush show.
I don't know where you've been me lad, but I see you won first Prize!

I was recording the show but stopped after a couple episodes. The Super Cub part is neat and I like the scenery but I found the rest of the show too much cookie-cutter reality TV and nothing of much interest there, sorta boring. I was hoping for something more along the lines of "Alone In the Wilderness" with Dick Proenneke style living. Incidentally, if you haven't watched Proenneke's stuff, you are missing out.

I stopped in at Twin Lakes and met Dick Proenneke. We sat down, shared a bowl of blueberries and swapped stories for a while. He was a great fellow who was living his dream. There is also a book "One Man's Wilderness" by Dick's friend Sam Keith which tells the story and has numerous nice pictures.

Buggs66 is right on the money. Tom Orr lives in a very nice log home, just a little ways off the hiway, between Eureka and Libby. Hardly the "life and death struggle" they'd like it to sound like. He's always dressed in the leather and stuff ( I sorta remember when he rode broncs in the area), but it's not really any further towards "mountain man" living than we are here! I guess to someone in downtown LA or NYC, it might seem pretty primitive... The last one said something about him heading out to find meat to survive the winter... hell, he can just run into the store in Eureka and get what he needs if he doesn't find something trudging around in the snow..... it's not much of a primitive life, if ya ask me!!!

Steve, I thought I saw that calender too out of the corner of my eye. The scene passed so quickly that it was one of those, "I could have sworn I saw" moments. I don't have a DVR. Thanks for verifying that.

Everybody deserves their 15 mins of fame. I think Pete put Marty up to this long ago.
    Have fun with it!!
Don't watch the show, no cable, but hope they mention the Alaska Trappers Association. Marty has trained a bunch of em!

    jk,

On another note, you mentioned you have a new devise for your iPad for flying. I have people asking me what it is. Care to expand on the subject. I appreciate it if you do. Don/Torch
