    panel switches

    Hey all,
I am in the middle of a 12 fuselage rebuild. Time to think about the panel, particularly the switches. Are there any cool looking, neato switches available? I am liking the idea of a 'different' looking switch than the standard toggle.

    Thanks, Joe

Are you starting with a blank or panel with holes cut from previous install?

Aircraft Spruce catalogue should cover a -12?

I like the look of these, are they "heavy?"

Starting with a blank, will be similar to the old layout.

Toggle breakers for loads you want switched and pull breakers for the unswitched loads. Simple and clean. Mount them in a drop out sub-panel for easy access.

    switches

Switches and breakers mounted in recessed panel under instrument panel. One is a PA18 and the other is a PA12. Recessed panel keeps switches and push-pull knobs flush with the main panel. Engine controls on the left and cabin controls on the right.

    Hi Cubunltd:

I noticed in the picture of the PA-18 that the primer is on the leftside of the panel? Is that standard for that model?

    Thanks for the post.

Take another look. The primers are on the right side of both panels. the PA12 panel doesn't show it but it is. I believe the standard is on the right. For the PA18 the controls on the left are Mixture and carb heat. controls on the right are primer, cabin heat and windshield defrost. For the PA12 the left is mixture and carb heat. The right has cabin heat, windshield defrost and rear seat heat, then primer.

    switches

You can just barely see the primer knob on the right.

OK. Thank you for the clarification. I see the primers! Mahalo!

It's been a while since I was in real PA-18

Why do I want toggles and pull breakers only? It maybe just fetishisation, or a dormant gene. Rocker switches are here to stay, and I am learning to cope.

I know rockers can have pretty lights and have little plackards etc.. From a rational view rockers switches are better?

I have Cessna rockers in my -12.

Any bias on rockers vs. toggle?

These are very tempting...very different for a 12

I used to have Cessna rockers in my Cessna. Not any more.

Idea: rockers could also have different surfaces that would allow recognition by feel only. Similiar to my keyboard and TV remote. Hum, maybe we will see an amendment in part 23 for switches soon.

\Rocker switches are ok, especially the ones from aveoengineering, they're really cool. But I agree with Mike about not being breaker switches. With toggles I can eliminate a lot of the breakers by using breaker switches. Also the rockers take up a little more room than toggles.Personal preference I guess.

Ya think? Yes, I prefer toggle breakers and pull breakers. I like my switches to be functional without commanding attention. They are not a design feature to me. I do appreciate the removable sub-panel in the -12. The Cessna is bad enough to play contortionist in to service the wiring. The -12 would be impossible.

Yeah, panel space in a tandem airplane is sad at best. I like my toggles/pullers. The Scout has a mini panel behind the pilot and above, totally out of the way.

On my boat I have a panel the size on an outhouse. It is all lighted rockers switches. You can see the rockers are on 10 feet way.

My old panel is pictured above. I am not adding anything, so I would have plenty of room for rockers. Plus, I fully admit that I want something different looking.

Make sure to have a logical flow in the panel. Placements that are intuative! Thank you for the posts.

I am reading this, looking at who is posting, and it seems there is an acceptance for breaker switches being ok to use for lights and such. Is that correct?

Also, there seems to be a reason not to use rocker switches, are they not as good?

I have an AUX fuel pump I need to deal with having a light for, so was thinking a lighted rocker switch...

Thanks for the comments and help.

Is there a required spacing between switches and breakers?

Is there a reason that toggle switches are preferred?

I think I am going back to toggle mag switches also, and maybe a toggle starter with cover...

    Thoughts?

I love all lighted rockers on the boat panel. Looks cool at night with RADAR, SONAR, GPS and all the rockers lit up.

Hard to miss what is turned on with lit rockers.

The above AveoE links didn't work. They may have changed their site.

You'd still need circuit breakers though.

Also, consider how you are going to service all the stuff behind the panel. That is why I put all of the breakers and switch/breakers on a separate panel that I can easily drop down (even unplug if necessary) and get to the gauges, pitot/static lines etc. So far in 243 hr, I have had to pull the altimeter to be rebuilt (again), the new EI EGT/CHT gauge which failed, installed a MAP instead of the wet compass and tightened the static lines. So the ability to drop this panel has been reeeeeel handy.

I like the removable idea, but in practice are you just adding weight and more connections that will fail?

Your panel has WAY more on it than I plan to have, not sure how many engine analizers I want
