That's too bad. I hope he isn't charged with all the "rescue" costs?

Those that have and those that will !!!

Sucks for Lonny but it looks like its not hurt very bad.

wow, if every time someone flipped a cub up here it made the news, we'd need a whole another section in the news paper!!

Lesson number one, if your gonna flip it is better to do it in a secluded area where no one else knows but your personal rescue party.

The cub in the photos looks like it has squared off wing tips. I thought Loni's were round? Are we sure it was Loni? Could the media be mistaken?

  9. #9
dark tips with a hard paint line... looks to be a bow tip bird.

    but media mistaken?????

    Never!

    they always get it correct.

Last I saw Loni's Super Cub was hanging in Paul's hanger in Palmer. Looks kinda like Alec's plane that was in the video.

Like Dave said, no one is immune. $hit happens to even the BEST.
Loni, I hope that will polish right out!

This brings up something I always wondered. S J, just how many hats have you sent out, and how long have you been sending them?? I know they are a personal thing (I have one), but numbers don't have to be secret do they??

To be honest, I have not kept close track. I guess I could look at the shipments file, but I have printed two batches of 144 - we are 1/2 way through the second batch. Of course, some people require multiple hats, or even the upgraded hard hat version. Not that I know any of those people, I've just heard tell...

Yes it was Alec's plane but Alec is in Africa so who could be flying it? I'll never tell, We got it flipped back over last night and with new prop and a couple of struts should fly out today.

SJ I really need a new hat but the qualification for the Flip/Flop Flyers in order to receive a "free hat" is a bit onerous, at least for me anyway, and since you didn't invite me to see Jimmy Buffet in KC so I could purchase a new proper flying hat I have been in a quandary.

So, SJ I hereby submit that you should consider a new approach by providing "free hats" to the ever shrinking membership of the "I haven't Flipped/Flopped...YET flyers" of course this would include a return envelope to be kept in the aircraft at all times for the immiediate surrender of ones membership when the inevitable expulsionary event occurs. Other than my recieving the new hat I am in need of (just ask Nancy) the other obvious benifit if your new program would prevent multiple memberships for certain overachievers whom shall remain nameless...

Do hat qualifying events have to be...on the record? I know a guy who may have earned one a few years ago, but I can't be sure because I never read about it in the newspaper.

Well, bummer. Glad he's OK. Wouldn't expect anything else. These guys are on the edge and know it. Super expert. No telling what caused it, but lot's of variables and things happen. I'm sure the cub will be 5 times better when they're done fixing it shortly. I'd fly with Loni any day and hope to get some pointers from him. Too bad he made the paper. Pierce has the better plan.

Man that sucks... glad he is ok! That is one nice flying bird... hope it´s back flying soon.

Believe me there are PLENTY of hats that have gone out on "SJ, word has it"....

Also, although Loni certainly did the full flip and possibly a flop, that is not required for a hat. The "flip flop" is figurative and any mishap which involves the bending of fabric and pride qualifies...

At least you didn't hear it from me. Just had lunch with the boys the plane is hardly hurt looks like two struts a prop and some sand removal and good to go.

That would be good in Fairbanks. Then we would have two sections in our newspaper.

    Kirby,

first: borrow Mr. E's bird, it has experience with hats, and he is to busy to fly it... (word is it will be abandon the second week of May)

Second: I was not even aware that Jimmy was going to perform in KC, so I am doubly depressed

Third: planes are replaceable, Loni is not. Bend, break or burn them to the ground- just stay in one piece please!

To Loni's credit, that Cub Loni was flying on the Columbia - if in fact it is the one I think it was - was very heavy. Solo it is bound to be quite nose heavy and definitely NOT the light, lean, balanced, nimble flying machine that Loni usually flies. No offense intended, Alec. It is my desire that the reputation of our mutual friend Loni remain intact.

  32. #32
I'm glad the damage was minor. I've been told it is better to run off the end of a gravel bar into the water than it is to nose over in the gravel. This one flipped in the water and didn't get hurt very bad.

Actually, in the above video, it looked like he almost didn't make it to shore.

Ha, Rumor has it, it doesn't even need that !!

I can only wonder what motivates people to post this stuff. I thought this community was constructed to be productive and positive. I feel some people on this site are too eager to publicize others misfortunes. Is it that we are jealous of Loni's abilities? Are we glad to see a good pilot show some signs of fault or be human? I had higher hopes for this site. Put yourself in Loni's shoes, lets show him some respect.

For the record, I have been on my back twice and on my nose twice. I am not ashamed of it and have learned a lot by my mishaps. It has made me a better pilot and am fortunate to have lived through it. On the other hand, the last thing I would want would be someone other than myself directing attention to it on the world wide web.

Doug, If you will notice SJ posts anything that mentions a Super Cub in the news on this website. Has done it for almost 10 years. I feel bad for Loni as I have been there myself a few times as well. Like a friend of mine said when everyone was bashing me for doing stupid things like landing on gravel bars, "the risk goes up when you get away from the 5000' runways". Sorry to see some of the comments here. Obviously people have different missions for a Super Cub, everyone should have a common respect for one another. Having been around Loni last spring at Paul Claus's lodge I believe he is a very talented pilot and a really fun guy to hang out with. I think more people need the one on one relationship before they judge.
