    Knik Meet and Greet 2012

I know its a little early, but the days seem to be flying by. I really enjoyed meeting everyone last year on our evening gathering. I have been talking with a couple guys, and I think it would be fun to have it on the Friday before the airmen's show, and make it a camp out. Maybe cook some hotdogs, and sit around the campfire telling lies. Anyway I would love to do it again, and look forward to seeing you all again, and meeting new people. Hope to see you there. Ron

Friday May 4th, starting around 6 PM. Hope to see you there. Ron

I'll try to make it Ron but it may be a little early for me. I like it the week between the show and Vadez gives us out of towners something to do.

  4. #4
Theres nothing set in stone yet, if everyone would wrather have it during the week. We can do that instead. Lets take a poll.

  5. #5
If we camped out, do you think it would be OK to drink whiskey? It is kinda cold under that big block of ice and a little whiskey would help keep the chill off. We might also want to think about bring our own wood, as I don't think you will find much around the picknic table strip area.

    26H,

i think it would be great for you to bring whiskey for the rest of us to drink!!!!

    Signed:

Mr. Eaton, (the man formerly known as BigE)

If I make it, I will be looking for a ride, so don't know how much weight I could bring with me...
I don't know where you've been me lad, but I see you won first Prize!

I vote for the Wednesday evening in between like last year. But if it is Friday, I probably can rearrange things and make it. Lot to be said for a camp over... Couldn't do a camp over on Wednesday. Plus getting up and going on Saturday is going to be tuff to make trade show opening on Saturday unless we get moving early and clean up first. Then if SC.org does a Saturday night gig, will be a long day.

PA-12 or -14's with Belly Pods are good wood haulers.

I agree with Scooter 14's are good wood haulers, I like the camp out idea. I'd be able to arrange a week night either way.

    Ron:

Glad to hear you're again organizing this gathering at the Knik. I had a blast there last year and enjoyed meeting soo many other Cub Drivers. Unfortunately, it doesn't look good for me returning this year as we are getting set for a busy fire season and another "kitchen pass" to fly north in may doesn't seem to be doable this year. The camp idea sounds great, wish we would have done that last year. After the air men's show would have been my choice as well.

I may have to be there if I win the air men's cub? If not have a great time anyway.

    Ray,

I wish you could make it again. It was really great meeting you last year, and I also really enjoyed following your trip up. I think this is going to become an annual thing so maybe next year. Fly safe. Ron

  14. #14
I am planning to camp out there all week on the hope that the rest of you will show up some time.
Life in Alaska isn't always easy, but it has its rewards.

  15. #15
My guess is that 16B may know a potential wood hauler or two. Unfortunately, we can't cache wood there, it'll be gone when we show. However, there are easy ways to take care of this.

  16. #16
Looks like I'm not going to make it this year Ron (damn) but next year should work out.

PS I'll be in the caribbean thinking about you guy---- have fun

  17. #17
7th or 8th might have a better overall turnout with the out-of-town guys. Maybe a little warmer too....
I have a wood hauler also.

Can you guys give me some specifics about where the gathering spot is? Moved up right after the Airman's show last year so I wasn't around. Thanks.

Picnic Table strip. The "Toe" of Knik Glacier on south side, just before the "Gorge" to Lake George. Thinking about going myself....

  20. #20
Im not sure if I could make the mid week fly-in. I am going to be in Illiamna for spring bear season. So I guess if Im going, Its going to have to be on Friday. Sorry if it don't work for everyone. I hope to see everyone there, and I hope this snow gives up, and warms up a little. Im getting anxious for wheel season. See you there, Ron

  21. #21
    Ron,

The other thing that kinda made it work to get a crowd last year was spreading the word at the Airman's show. If we do it before the show starts, this forum would be the main way to get the word out, and some of the people at the show who don't lurk here would not get the word. I also kinda like having something for the visitors to do during the week between Airman's Trade Show and Valdez. There is a fair amount of sort field practicing going on out there too that week from the competitors in the Valdez gig. Since Valdez starts there activity on Friday, many visitors take a leisurely day to get there so really Monday to Wednesday after the show makes the most sense. Last year you had a thing in Big Lake and Jr Hamack had a Rustic Wilderness thing going and the Knik fly-in worked in between them giving the visitors a few things to do around the Anchorage/Mat-Su area before heading to Valdez. But like I said, I could make either work myself, but I think the in-between week has the better potential to get a bigger crowd out there. Bummer your new guiding job is getting in the way of the week between.

How about a different location in the Knik area, say above the gorge this year? It's more scenic, less wind generally and is less trampeled than the picnic table strip.
I agree w/scooter on the mid-week thing, but being Valley trash I can make either date.

  23. #23
Ok guys, A unfortunate event has changed my plans again, and from what I can see it is fairly unanimous about having the gathering on Wednesday. I am setting the date in Stone this time Wednesday May, 9th 6:00 P.M. I hope this works for everyone. Sleep over if you would like. Now , as far as where to have it, I think that the spot we had it last year was a great spot, however I think the picnic strip just above the Gorge on the right hand side would also be a great spot, and would less prone to having ATV traffic. What do you guys think about that. Its plenty long, and also provides a lot of parking potential, and the scenery is Spectacular. Ron

  24. #24
Sounds good to me! You know you can make your life easier by just setting time and place, those who really want to make it will fin a way. Asking this crowd what they think can be dangerous!

  25. #25
I'm in! I'm going to plan on doing the camp out thing too. A tad more remote will help the firewood issue. Let me know if you need some help. Thanks for doing this again 16B

  26. #26
Ok, Im taking 1620A's advice. Its going to be at the strip just above the gorge, I will post coordinates at a later date. Lots of parking, Excellent photo opertunity. I think APEX has the right idea of having a camp fire, and sleep over, so if anyone wants to start hauling wood up and dropping it off next to the picknick table that would be great. I will do the same as soon as I am on tires. Hope to see you there. Ron

  27. #27
Thanks for your effort Ron, I'll see if I can make an early firewood run.

Thanks for the help. I am going back on wheels this weekend, so I will also start taking some wood back and dropping it off. Does anyone have some wood that they are willing to separate with. I will come and cut it up, and split it. Thanks again, Ron.

  29. #29
You can have all the wood you need from my house!

    Reminder and heads up!

Lake Hood strip will be closed 5/7/12 at 7am thru 6/8/12 for maintenance. I was told by airport maintenance that it will be open on weekends Friday night through Sunday and will be open Friday 5/11/12 for the Valdez Fly in.

Anyone planning on flying out of Lake Hood for the Knik gathering will not be able to leave Lake Hood on Wednesday 5/9.

Also anyone flying into Anchorage for the Trade Show and the Valdez Fly in need to anticipate the closure times.

The contractor has already changed this schedule once due to ground conditions so checking with Andy at LHD Lease office 907-266-2410 would be a good idea.

During Lake Hood strip closures you'll be routed to arrive and depart from Anchorage International and can taxi to Hood via Victor taxiway. The tower is very accommodating to us little guys during these times (Hood and AIA share the same tower, after all). Just remember to contact Anchorage ground before entering Victor on the way to. The tower will hand you off as necessary to get back. You might want to visit ANC terminal procedures and familiarize yourself with the Post Office Arrival but as often as not they modify that arrival and keep your downwind and base legs on the east side of 32/14. WHen departing expect to sidestep over and fly the typical outbound Hood routes. Hood Strip closures are fairly common and don't cause any interruption to my flying. You will get a taste of how long pavement taxiing scrubs rubber off your Bushwheels, though!

Also, ANC Tower and Approach is very accommodating to aircraft with no transponders in Charlie airspace. Just give approach a call from a ways out inbound, and they'll almost always waive the transponder requirement. I'm guessing with Hood strip closed, they will always waive the transponder requirement. Same outbound.
I never had them deny me landing at ANC without a transponder in any case.

For a month long uncommon closure of LHD; Anchorage International is not an option for me. From the north shore of Lake Hood that would put 5-10 miles of asphalt taxing on the 31s plus T/O and landings. But hey SB if you have rubber to burn go for it.

I've secured a spot on the gravel/ski strip at Merrill for $60/month I figure money well spent.

After better than 10 years on my 29s its apparent that these tires don't last forever and that has nothing to do with tread wear.

More to the point, your earlier post indicated folks would not be able to leave from Hood during the closure times. That is incorrect. I thought some of the guys intending to fly in around the show time might appreciate knowing they will have access and will be able to come and go as they please.

SB, not interested in a pi#%ing contest. It is correct LH strip will be closed during that time and just wanted to give people the heads up to plan accordingly.

If you want to compare time on Bush Wheels and time at Lake Hood I'd be happy to...How about over a beer at Knik I'll buy!

No pissing contest. Not even close. I hope visitors find Lake Hood pleasant and accommodating. I always try to help to that end.

I'll pass on the Knik event. I have other plans. Maybe next time. Why so much talk about tires? Aren't you primarily on floats?

  39. #39
Couple wheel trips planned in June, wife and I want to fly into Kennicott and explore surrounding area. Won't be on floats till July.

Flew in there today and landed in my little citabria, and its one of the only places with half of the strip open for landing. It still winter back there but opening soon. If I get the time, I will put together some challenging landing spots and a map for you cub drivers. By the way today, steady 15 knot winds and beautiful 2.5 airplane length landings and take offs.
