I wonder what Amy will do with the money.
Glenn
A target line with 100' of grace short and long? So much for precision.
Just mail the check to Eddie Doyle....or I mean Carolett.
Heavy Hauler
They better have good cameras and instant replay and good records. That could get serious.
And yes, send Ed
Let them run there show!!!!! We FINALLY have something going on in the midwest, lets just hear good things. Also im sure theyed love to hear any good ideas from the pros but its still there thing. Dont be chasing it away. Not with a keyboard.
I SO want to go!!! That would be kinda cool, and my student loans could always use a bonus payment :P Saw this a few days ago--it sounds like NIFA setup, which makes sense because UND is big on flight team stuff. I wonder how they will manage traffic? Hope they get a great showing! (and maybe I can con an airplane over and embarrass myself).
Glenn, when are you going to hold your 'mags off' landing contest?
In transition. Never sit still.

Now that's a spot landing contest
Finally, a contest run somewhat right. 100 foot either side is a long ways, would rather see 25 foot to tighten up the hole. Main thing is closest to the line, either side. Lost a few contest by being 6 inches short of the line and guy who claimed the prize was 100 + feet beyond. Since I moved onto this huge 3000 ft strip from the old 330 ft strip, have gotten out of practice.
So is the 'perfect' score a three-pointer with the mains making contact on the line?
Steve
Yes, mains on the line when the airplane quits flying.
Does the plane have to be airworthy after the "landing"??

How about before the landing?
Steve,
Don't you have $20K allotted for the NH short landing this year from the slush fund?

Steve: In the spirit of competition how about offering a $15K prize to the winner of the landing competition this year at NH?Gary

There has been talk about adding a spot landing contest to the short landing contest at New Holstein. My belief is that the same person assuming they are not in an L1011 would win them both. It's only 447NM to Grand Forks from 8D1. Not as far as I thought... a 10 hour fly out..
sj
Just to bring this back up. Would be cool if the bushwheel guys could make a stop here.
The Seaplane spot landing contest in Maine rules are, You can reduce power on landing but if you add power to make the line you are disqualified.
No added power, so you have to judge the landing right from the start. As if it was a forced landing. Best practice in the world, for real life emergency.

Just a quick note about the landing contest.
We have made a small rules change. The target box is smaller to allow easier distance measuring. Looking a those registered, we are expecting a great competition, with many coming very close to the target. Because of this we think a 200 foot target box is not needed.
We will not be surprised if we need to have a fly off between several pilots who hit the target.
Also, we will be serving a pancake breakfast and lunch on the grill. We expect the meals to be $5 each.
If you want to rent our airplane for the competition we will be making it available for a flat $50 for an attempt.
Thank you for registering. We can wait to see you.
Sincerely,
Sean Varian

Had to post this last email. That $50 rental fee i got to think about that one for awhile.Thought about it for awhile, if its a 747 it would be fun to make the attempt.

Typical of GFK Flight Support to put this directly opposite OSH.
Clueless.

We are a little more than a month away from awarding $10,000 to the pilot making the most accurate landing at our competition.
This is turning out to be a large event. We currently have 225 people saying that they are coming. Many of whom stopping by on the their way home from Oshkosh. We are very excited that you are a part of it.
I have a correction from my last email. Our airplane rental is $40 for a landing attempt. Not $50.
To make it clear. If you would like to compete, but do not have an airplane to use or do not want to bring your own airplane, we will rent you ours. If you compete in any other airplane the event is still FREE.
A rental check out is not required. If you are not checked out in our C172 we will provide an instructor to ride with you during your landing attempt. You will only need to show that you have a current flight review and that you are 90 day current for carrying passengers.
If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me. Happy Flying!
Sincerely,
Sean Varian

um, with an instructor we still need the 90 day paperwork????
Can we scare the instructor a tinsy bit during our approach?
INstructors don't like bush approaches.
I don't know where you've been me lad, but I see you won first Prize!
DW they've already written the check to Eddie Doyle , Manhatten Kansas mike o
I don't think so Mike when I filled out the paperwork they ask for my address so they could mail me the check
DW
if he shows up!
Was ascaredto return to Valdez, or the plane's owner was
to defend the title
Now with even more peoples coming you say that the silver beagle will be there???
I really hope someone posts videos... I bet that there is a big difference between Valdez numbers and this competition.
my prediction is that it will be a person that flies in high DA all the time that takes it. Different feeling and look than taking off in what Bushweel Bill calls Valdez "magical air".
Omike, take video for us ground pounders to watch!
Good luck to all that go...
I don't know where you've been me lad, but I see you won first Prize!

[TD="align: left"]Doug,
Here are some notes to make your arrival to Grand Forks enjoyable and safe.
The Grand Forks International Airport is very busy. There will be a high volume of training going on in addition to the landing contest. Please use the Grand Forks Approach Control, 132.3, and listen up. Approach will funnel all VFR traffic in from the northeast, southeast, southwest or northwest. If you filed IFR expect a 5 mile final approach. On July 26th a group of new restricted airspace will be charted to the west and southwest of Grand Forks. The closest of these areas is currently depicted as a TFR over and west of the Grand Forks Air Force Base. If you are talking to ATC and are using a discreet squawk code these should not be a factor. Please check NOTAMs and have current charts with you. Click here for charts
The main runway will be busy on competition day so you should expect your arrival to be on a smaller active parallel runway. Have the airport diagram handy for quick reference after you land to make the taxi instructions easier. Click here for charts
We will be parking all airplanes on Ramp A between A4 and D taxiways. Please follow the line personnels' parking instructions. After you park, please wait for one of our shuttles to pick you and your passengers up. It will be a long walk to our facility.
Once at our FBO you may eat right away or register for your landing slot. You may also request line services, fuel, oil, etc. at the registration desk. If you need to go back to your airplane, you must use a shuttle. No one will be allowed back onto the ramp without escort.
If you are driving, please park your vehicle, in the grass immediately to the east of our hangar, #2403. The area will be clearly marked.
Airplane Rental
Just like we've advertised, we will offer our Cessna 172 as an airplane in which to compete. It will be rented on a first come first served basis. Competitors will compete in the same order in which they register. We will fit as many renters into the competition as we can before 8 pm. We do not offer any guarantees that all who sign up to rent the airplane will get to compete. If the airplane breaks and cannot be fixed that day it can't be used. If you don't fly you will not be charged the rental fee.
If you are not checked out in the C172 one of our CFIs will ride with you. You must have a current BFR and be 90 day passenger current. This requirement is to ensure that you are qualified to be PIC during your landing attempt.
Please feel free to mail me any question that you may have. We are looking forward to seeing you.

When I arrived, a young man with a C-150 had it at 7'..... I lost a tie by $1000.00 / foot... I was 17'.... I'm sure it stood as they were getting ready to shut it down when I departed. Story I heard was he bought the 150 for time building.....

It is not the equipment.... but the strategic use of fuel, in volumes, that does the trick!
I don't know where you've been me lad, but I see you won first Prize!
haha, yes.... I've only got 20+ hours flying in my cub... got it over memorial day weekend and split the flying time between it and my RV-4... definitely need to utilize more volume of fuel through it
