Thread: Whats a good used mag?

    Whats a good used mag?

How does one go about figuring out which mag is a good solid unit to buy?
I've heard raves about how great Slicks are & also how crappy they are!
Same with Bendix, I've heard so many diff storys I can't even remeber which is which.
I need a good used shielded mag for a A-75hp Cont.
    Would one of these fit my needs?...Bendix S4LN 51360-26 (says fits C-75 & 85hp)

You first need to know if your engine is a - 8 or -12, the mags rotate in different directions.

    Why a "Used Mag"?

Note that over MANY years that there are different series mags from both of these mfg.

Skip Slick 400, 4000, 4200 series as these have been discontinued for quite some time.

4300 ( maybe a 4301 on yours) are current production.

A new Slick 4300 series should provide good service @ reasonable cost for the first 1000 hrs.

Overhauled Bendix/TCM are available from AC Spruce for about $500.

There are PMA parts available for Bendix at a somewhat reasonable cost.

Due to pricing structure & maintenance requirements the Bendix can be kept in service

for less cost after the first 1000 hrs.

Many mag problems are due to not accomplishing the regular SCHEDULED maintenance @ 500 hr intervals.

SCHEDULED means YOU pick the time.

    UNSCHEDULED means the mag does!

I have a pair of older SF4 bendix mags with the shielded harness that I'd sell as cores. I checked the coils and everything looks good. They do not have impulse couplings. PM if you're interested.

    All A65-75hp Continentals are A65-8 & A75-8.
    So a mag from a C-85 or 0-200 won't work?

So the A65 that came in Ercoupe's with a starter are -8 ?

We all learn something new everyday. Got this over on Harry Fentons site.

[h=Starters and Small Continental Engines]2[/h]The A-65-9 is the only A-65 configured to accept a starter and very few were made. As such, certain unique parts are very difficult to find and parts for the Eclipse starter are as scarce as dinosaur DNA. The -9 accessory case is unique and different than later -12, -14 cases equipped with starters, but relatively available because most -9 engines were converted to -8 configuration. The C-75-12 through the O-200 use the same accessory case and engine accessories and may more parts are available to support these engines. A major headache with the -9 is magnetos as the only type approved are the very heavy (8lbs each!) Bendix SF4 non-impulse magnetos. There are no Slick magnetos approved to fit the -9 engine. By the time all is said and done with the weight of the -9, it is marginally lighter than a C-85-12 with lightened modern accessories.
The most practical choices for small Continentals with starters are the C-85-12 or O-200. Lightweight alternators, starters ad magnetos are available that can shave 12-16 lbs off of the dry weight of the engine. The C-85 uses a slightly lighter case than the O-200 and is even lighter yet. If you want to get fancy, there are various vacuum pump drive gears and bosses on the case that can be shaved off for a couple of pounds of weight savings.

I still wondered about the Ercoupe and Mooney Mite and found this.

Just ran across an A65-12F. Not in the Continental O/H manual. Anyone have info or application on this motor?

From the TCDS Model A-65-12 differs from A-65-8 only in that C-75-12 type crankcase and accessories section are incorporated. So it should have starter and generator capabilities.
Going out on a limb I think that this engine was used in the Money Mite M-18C and M-18 C 55 and it is listed on that TCDS.

    Sorry for the thread drift
