Way to go Chuck, looks like it climbs really good. Have fun, Greg

Do you have an address or phone number of the folks that hold the STC for putting the 85 in the Taylorcraft? I am assuming that if there is not a change in the model designation, then the gross weight remains the same and therefore would still be usable under LSA rules.

    Chuck:
In the pic of the rear of the engine, before it was hung, it looks to me like you have the small 8 amp B&C alternator on. Did you get a field approval or is this an experimental installation.
I like that little alternator and would like to put it on a Cub.
    Thanks.

  8. #48
Tj the alternator is the g200 12 amp and yes it will be field app B&C has all kinds of 337s they will send you or i have them also and can send the cub ones to you we though we would try to send direct to okie city using 23-27 and existing 337 as data

Thought this option (direct OKC) was only available with pre Oct 1955 337's (approved data)?

While I respect the folks that use Cubs to make a living, my uses are for recreation and leisure - AND I'M NOT ASHAMED!!!

Be aware that mailing the 337 direct to OKC and not hearing back from them does not mean that it is approved! It just goes to a clerk who places it in your plane's file. Nobody in OKC reads it for accuracy. That method is not an end run around the FSDO and it has the possibility of causing someone some grief later down the road. Make DAMMED sure that it is approved, BEFORE it is mailed to OKC.

Just because it was approved as a field approval on one airplane does not necessarily mean that it is approved on your plane.

I heard this topic discussed at a recent FSDO sponsored IA meeting. In the old days when the FSDO read them first, they were really doing you a favor by keeping you or a subsequent owner out of trouble later on.

Thanks Chuck. I am looking for a second plane that I can afford and will do what I want it to do. This may make the Tcart a possible option.

  13. #53
well we have got about 2 hr on it now and I can't say enough good about it so far take offs about 150 ft climb with just me about 1800 ft min it will turn 2500 + with the prop that i have did not seem to want to over speed oil temp 180 deg cht 300 #4 325 #1 other two were in that range two people in plane and window open with 26in bush wheels no wind level flight 118 mph ind

I had some discussions with Mr Bowden when I had an 0200 powered J-3/PA11 about a 75x38 prop. Seems his attitude is how can we get this legal rather than this is not legal for all of the following reasons. Don't think he is available for Tcart issues only. Jim

Not sure where you thought it was going? My question is because I'm interested in that little alternator. I've seen one in an experimental and it works great. It's super light, only one moving part and no brushes. I was hoping B&C had got an STC for it. Our faa will only do field approvals if you hire a DER or submit documents to their eng. Dept. My last PMI said the wait would be 3 years.

  17. #57
T.J., I actually used Terry Bowden to get mine approved. He is a DER and his rates were more than reasonable.

  18. #58
I use terry for the stc for c85 engine and he has dar paper work for luscombe exhaust as far as the alternator will do field app threw fsdo

    TJ,

I know of a few 8 amps approved around here on cubs if that helps.
I don't know where you've been me lad, but I see you won first Prize!

    Be careful.

The words accepted and approved seem to get mixed up.

2 Years ago I got a copy of a FA done in one office 6 mos. earlier. Gave it to a person to take to the local office to see if I could use as data and got shot down.

I have a stack of J-5 previous approvals where I want to do exactly the same thing and I have pretty much told no. I probably need a skinny AI that won't take the answer no.

    Heck yea you are lucky...

I just wonder if you are going to get a new painting of the T-craft with the new engine?
