    Fairchild F24W

Here are some pictures of our newest project. It is a 46' Fairchild F24W. It is a local plane that was owned by Marty Propst from Saint Augustine. The plane was dinged in an off airport landing and was taken apart for repairs. Marty was a collector and the plane was his baby. It came with TONS of spares. Cowling rings, wheel pants, everything for an extra engine but the case (Warner super scarab), and boxes of NOS Fairchild parts.

I got to fly a 24W and fell in Love.
Looked at one closely with the ServAero STC for the 220 Continental. The one I flew had a engine failure and ended up in a field also.

Cool, love the Warners. Don't have a line on any more engines do you? have a friend with a Great Lakes that is needing one.

    Cool, love the Warners.
The guys that ran the airport here in NW Iowa where I learned to fly bought the remains of the Warner factory(I think Chicago) back in the 1960's. One weekend a kid was working on a lawnmower and started a fire that burned everything up. Was quite a blow.

I am currently in the middle of a top Overhaul on a warner 145. I have a spare 145 as well. Perhaps we can help each other. PM me if interested. Wonderful engine.

Spent lots of time rebuilding a F24...we hung a 275 Jake and a 2B-20 on that one...made a nice plane out of it! They're great planes, and a joy to fly! I also spent alot of time with a Fairchild 71. That was a fun machine!
    Have fun!!

I had a chance to fly and buy a F-24 W years ago. A lot of room in it, but it was 40 MPH slower than my Cessna Airmaster with the same Warner engine. I passed on it ! Steve Pierce - if you need some engine parts , drop me a line ! John

There's a -24 down here in Atlanta that has a Jake on it. That thing has got some serious pull.

Mike Connor here in Georgia still does OH and rebuilds on Warners. He may have parts.

Always liked the Warner powered 24's. Unfortunately in my area there was a 24 being rebuilt that had the Warner "repurposed" for another airplane. Was sad to see the airframe sitting around.

Clay, what's the number on that 24 down there? Somewhere I've got some pics of this one..and it's been sold, so could be the same one.?? Sort of a dark creme and brown, with a Bamboo Bomber cowl?

I'll have to dig I to my pics to find it. This one is bright Vermillion Red, real hot looking.

That Pilgrim was flown by Ernie of D and E fame, if I remember right. Maybe 1998 or so I ran into Ernie delivering a fuselage in the back of his pickup. We spoke for 10 or 15 minutes about Alaska and Airplanes, we spoke in the parking lot of the Super 8 in Fairbanks. Super nice fellow, interesting stories.

24W is a pretty nice flying bird. Really a nice sized airplane. Tcraft128, I love the yellow and blue/whit, looks great!! I've been wanting to do that combo on our Stinson. We had this 25 around for about a year. It was Tom Burmeisters from Iowa. Sold it to some folks in Brazil. We boxed it up, went down and put it back together. Fairchild actually sold quite a few 24's in Brazil back in the day.

I remember crawling around that Pilgrim when I was in ANC in '89...they had a wingtip off for some repair...looked like a bridge in there! I talked to a guy that hauled fish with it for a season...said it'd pretty much haul whatever you could stuff in, and really didn't have any bad habits. Quite the plane! Sure made the 71 that I traveled around in look small!

Very nice. Fairchilds are such wonderful planes.

Hey Jay, that F24 isn't holding up progress on the Cub is it?

  25. #25
A friend of mine recently picked up this W670 powered F24. I like this engine/airframe combo!

How about some pics of the interior?

Mike, all is good on the Cub, we are going to start covering soon.

The 220 conversion has been really nice. So far I am still figuring this bird out, but have been impressed with its performance. The 24 definately is a sweet handling machine. Time for some general TLC with it, it has been sitting in a hanger for a long time and seems to run a little bit better with every hour that it fly's.

Was that 670 powered Fairchild at Felts Field in Spokane for a while? Seems to me that the guy that ran the parts dept for Felts Field Aviation had a 670 powered one. (of course I can't remember his name right now)

    **edit I was wrong***

I know it used to be based on floats up on Devil's Track lake near Grand Marais (Lake Superior, north shore harbor town). Since '99 it's been in a small private field hangar west of Hinckley, MN

At one point in 77681's life it was based in Spokane, probably the same bird! It looks like it made its way from California, to Washington, then a fellow had it in both Rice Lake Wisconsin and Grand Marais MN for a while, from there to Hinkley MN, and now in Brainerd MN.

We put around 3hrs on 77681 on Wednesday. Getting the bird flying after sitting for 11 yrs has presented some basic challenges but it is running better with every hour that it flys. Next up is putting new fuel sending unit gaskets in and calibrating the units. The alternator fuse busted at a grass strip leaving my battery with zilch. Luckily the guy in the right seat was able to hand prop it. Definitely a sight

I have owned 11 airplanes including a PT-19. One that I have always wanted, and probably will never have because of all of the years that are behind me, is a F-24 with Ranger.
