Nice. I haven't had any moose meat since I moved away from AK...I miss it...
I'm not going to ask you your hunting secrets but I am plenty curious about these winter moose. They look so delicious. Congratulations.

If it looks smooth...it might be
If it looks rough...it is!!
Cute lil bugger. Gonna make George jealous.
How come his knees are all scarred up??
We had a young caribou in the yard here a couple years ago with a flesh wound from (I think) falling through spring ice. Strange that (s)he was all alone.
Hey, I found a pic: (see front left shoulder)

just walk up to her, bow as low as you can while on your knees and say please honey... in as humble tone as possible...

Those are two words that I would never link together. My wife's got the cold of the decade and she's stood next to me cutting meat for the past three nights without complaining. My hero.damned wife
Moose hunting is better in winter. No bugs, no devil's club, no mud and grass in the meat, a snow go sled to do the packing, I like it. 3 months until bear season on the AK Peninsula. I'll be ready.
It's all in fun, that's why there was a smiley at the end. My wife is pretty cool and lets me do pretty much anything, so we decided to come back to CO instead of AK. It was the best for us as a family. But I still want some moose meat!![]()
Are the AK mooses covered in ticks during the warmer months?
The few here in Minnesota are said to be badly infested; to the point of causing poor health.
The Minnesota license is a once-in-a-lifetime lottery process. A guy I used to work with would find three women in the office to go in on a 4-person license for the drawing. He'd pay the fees for all. As best I know, he never got his 'party' drawn for a hunt.
Does moose taste like elk? If so, it's well worth hunting. Some of the northern MN deer are barely fit to eat, depending upon their primary diet. Southern white-tails are corn and alfalfa fed and are quite tasty.
Jon B.
We here in N central BC are not bothered with ticks, just skeeters in the spring. I imagine same-same in Ak. I remember having to check for ticks every time I came in when living in Minn.
Here in BC we have a lottery draw too, and they say that if you get drawn, your odds go down the following year. My (lucky) experience has been: I've only missed one year in the 8 I've been here.
You haft'a buy an entry card ($6) and mail it in. June or July you get a letter saying if you've been drawn or not. Moose tag is $25 if you get to buy one. Some places there are a few moose around (just enough to make hunting interesting) like around here, some places are crawling with them. This will be my first year to fly out to the infested country (& I don't mean ticks)![]()
Nope, there's nothing like chewing on an elk. I know what you mean, the whitetails I used to shoot were quite "tasty" but still a good treat once in awhile. Vancouver Island (Blacktail) deer are like eating the finest veal. Moose is a coarser meat, not as wild tasting as whitetail, moist when cooked & good enough for everyday eats. Of course, what any meat tastes like has a lot to do with the way it was killed & handled. I was taught to head/neck shoot 'em so they're dead before they hit the ground. I believe that brings a better quality meat to the table than a gut-shot, tracked animal that's been stressed (to say the least) for a long time. I used to bow hunt, but after the first success, and witnessing the death, eating the meat, I immediately sold the gear.
Sorry, this turned into a rantI'll go back to my room now.

You could have just learned to shoot the bow better....
Now that I have delt with his rant against archery, shoot the beasts through the heart and lungs, they bleed out better and die quick. Also loss from jaw breaking and running away is less
As far as eating, I bet that Logan is spoilt with Mary's cooking, and she can make anything tast great!
I will walk over an elk steak every day for a moose.
I will take either over a cow.
Jason, why not come up and hunt moose this fall?
I don't know where you've been me lad, but I see you won first Prize!
I don't know how, I've only hunted stuff that shoots back for our Uncle.Seriously, I've never hunted. Always wanted to when I lived up there but never did. I always just brought the beer and ate meat at my buddy's house. They don't sell Moose meat anywhere down here though! Everytime I see the moose at the zoo, I drool.

She tells me every day. She's been sick (head colds) since she came back. But she's packed and ready to go riding. Sitting still isn't our style.
Tadpole, Non hunters don't appreciate how much work it takes to convert a big wild animal into packages of meat in the freezer. There's a reason most folks eat beef. It's easy and represents a fraction of the cost of what a hunter will invest in time and money to put game meat in the freezer. To live in Colorado and long for moose meat makes sounds crazy to me. I'd rather have rocky mountain elk any day. Pal up with a hunting friend and go get an elk. Let the other guys chase the big herd bulls and find yourself a rag horn. You'll smile every time you sit down at the table.
I've always said the perfect life would be to spend every day hunting elk and fishing steelhead. My two favorite things.

His ears aren't pinned back. He must not have been waiting too long.![]()
Whew! Just walked up on a young bull on a 2' wide through-the-woods trail while walking the dog. DEEP snow on both sides. Nowhere to run but back the way I came. HIS ears were pinned. That'll get a guy's heart pumping!
You got a little extra cardio on that walk.![]()

Bow Moose.jpg.JPG
I harvested this bull moose about 3 weeks ago with my bow @ 12 yards.
Wow nice moose. It must be a thrill with a bow.
It was the first time hunting for my friend and I this fall. A little moose was harvested after a week of labor. I went to my friend cabine to give him the meat so he could bring it back to town. The moose all fitted in the floats! By chance it was not that big....
Flying is on the back burner. Cool weather with no leaves or bugs. Grouse are in good numbers and I need the exercise. A handsome lab is in my face wanting to hit the trails before deer season arrives. Headed to ND in a week. Would love to make the Ohio flyin. Too many options with too little time. Retirement must really be something.

My sophomore-in-college son sent me this image this evening. He had two antelope tags and filled them after class today. He said 305 and 355 yards.
We put together a new rifle for him this fall. A .300 Win Mag with 16 shots through it now.
And his first animals without dad along too. His girl friend was though and took the picture with his phone.

Never shot a ruffed grouse...
Seriously, I need to do that. Looks easier to carry a limit than moose hunting
Say two legal bulls, (I am pretty sure) this year, but never fired a shot. If I question, I just let them walk.
Two nights ago a BIG one came out to check out the airstrip. Week after the season, no one anywhere around, 150 yards from the house/shop, tractor sitting there
I went back in and cooked dinner before I did something (else?) stupid. Figure he will be bigger next year.
Hence 'hunting'.
And I prefer moose to elk; we all have our likes!

I flew from Kansas to Alaska, 6179 miles round trip, and shot this .
One of my better trips !!

Looks like you were having a blast! Cool picture. Wish I was back there it seems to grow on a guy.
Here are a few from my North Slope caribou trip in March. Slept in a tent at -20 to -50. Fun trip!
