The unofficial beginning of Sentimental Journey has begun today. Just like the Olympic games a runner leaves Greece and begins the trek around the world passing the flame to light the torch at the beginning of the modern games. Our runner has left the gate carrying the flame to light our torch at Lock Haven. Our runner has been tempered in the hot summer desert and the high peaks on many a trip to fly his beloved Cub back to the place of it's birth so many times I have lost count. Our runner has spent alot of his life not only maintaining his own steed but helping those in the Southern California area keep their own birds ready to share the joy of flight with all who wondered what it was like to fly. Our runner is neither quick of foot or lean in stature, as a matter of fact one of his conquest at LHV is to sample all 39 flavors from the ice cream vendor at the flyin. Our runner is none other then Len Buckel from the San Diego area and today he entered his mighty 85hp J3 and headed east, a trek of 2300 + miles each way to carry the flame of " Yellow Fever " to Lock Haven to start the 75th birthday party celebrating the birth of the greatest airplane ever built, the simple Piper Cub. Come join us at Lock Haven. Oh I almost forgot, Len is 81 years young.

Will you be stopping in at Mt. Vernon for a day of Wacos, Mr. Norris? Rumor has it that a yellow Super Cub from Colorado will be there.

  11. #51
Hey - if some of you are stopping at Mt Vernon, you need to hit Graham Field (OH82) either coming or going!

I'm leaving for SJ on Tuesday. I get antsy after being in one place for few hours so what is there to do at the flyin? Any good places to fly too from SJ over the days? What is best way to get everyone together at SJ?

    Thanks,

    Dave N2002M

Look for Tim Allen's 2+2. It's a chick magnet and therefore every other SC.Org type is likely to be hanging around it---or the picnic tables by the food vendors/beer garden. Always familiar faces---look for SC.Org or T shirts with Holstein Cows on them.

    John

I stopped by Preferred to other day to ascertain when you were leaving. Wx looks good.

I'm still heading to Ohio. Hopefully you can make it. JP's one of the most experienced back seaters, so that should make the trip an easy one.

Dave I won't be down there till Wednesday, hang tight, there are some cool places to go. Tom's right, look for my 2+2 and we'll find the other bums. OR, look for Tom's PA-12, It will be the one with a canvas tent hanging off the strut. Or just holler I'm a Marine and Tom will find you.

Jim, not sure about the Ohio hills, I may have to be back, Sat. to pick my first corn

Scouter - The river is low and there are many gravel bars. I am going out to "dress up" some hills with the bushog now. How many of you are going to my place (OH82)? My plan is to head back from SJ Friday, so we will be ready for you.

    See you this weekend,
    John

The ME74 (Miller's Field) advance team launches Wednesday with the newest member of the PA-11 Cub Special Club, Mr. John Miller in N4504M. I trust that Tim, Glenn and the rest will seek him out in the BEvERages tent and convince him to complete his conversion back to the Cub world (he's been an L-2 for several years) such that he will venture to Bushwhackers, the WAD and other fine and entertaining events in the Northeast. He's a great guy to know (he owns a cool private grass airstrip with a museum) and excels at social hour so please make sure he is properly fed and watered.

We are not very good at alot of things but I think we can get him well watered, ifin he is willin. You can lead a horse to good water but you can't make him drink, we'll do what we can.

Water away, Glenn, water away. And just wait until you hear the stories! Also, he needs to formally sign up for SC.org now that he has the PA-11!

Surprise! Managed to make it out against most odds :P Glenn arranged for some great weather. He arrived a little after myself and Speedy Dave did.
    In transition. Never sit still.

I cant make it to SJ, now the weather looks like crap for a Friday ride to OH for OBP playtime. Anybody see Patrol Guy at SJ looks like Russell and I will be no shows. Rene take lots of pix, we will hope for the best and see what happens.

Made it back while the getting was good. We had intended to go to OH82 but it was not worth half a day of flying and adding 500 miles to Tim's flight. John G great to see the crowd and I will get you on the next one thanks for the invite and the cot.

The Dakota Light cub was there and the extended slotted wings looked good and Amy had promised a flight to show me how these could perform. Then she lost her 2011 spot landing title to a stock cub with NO mods ( Great Job Speedy) and started hanging her bikini from the prop. After that I put my checkbook away and never got the ride.

Mark the small bikini on the prop got the plane lots of lookers and the comment that this plane was being flown by a TRUE bush pilot
    What marketing genius

The folks at SJ put on a great show with bands every night it was like stepping back in time to when our cubs were built. It was HOT HOT HOT
and the daily swims in the river made it all good.

The vendors were beyond fair withe the food pricing making you think they stepped back in time. Glenn Guilfoyle was like the impromptu mayor of the event so I have only one comment more porta potties cleaned daily as they were RIPE after three days in the hot sun..

Tool Time thanks for the ride company.

Back home too. I can't believe ten dirty old men thought they could get one young lady to go skinny dipping.

Had a good time at SJ, got to see what Slackass looks like among other things. Every night after having a few beers on the way back to my tent I had to go past a Dakota cub with this hanging off the prop, and then try to sleep. Ya the swimming was great

    HA That was good Tim!

Dave who was going Skinny Dipping first I heard of this. I give Amy credit for putting up with us.

A great group of pilots and a super time flying to and from Lock Haven. Now, what were the names of those other places we landed?

  36. #76
Great time as always, good to get together with old friends at SJ. This flyin is not just a reunion for your airplane but for the friends from past years and a good time is always had by all who attend. Hopped a few rides in the J4 and got to solo the 37hp J2 which was a blast to fly. The view of Mead, Tim, Snert and Longwinglover in swimming gear may cause me to go to therpy but Amy in her Red bikini made it worth while.

Thank you kind sir! Appreciate it. She performed flawlessly for the entire trip. Took just under 8 hours to get out to Lock Haven, and just over 8 to get home. One stop each way, more for the pilot than the airplane. (It burns just under 5 gph and has 36 gallons to work with, so... )

We had a great time at Sentimental Journey and look forward to next year already!
    Joe

Rick - heck yes, you made it through the initiation with tree leaves and weeds hanging from your gear, so we need to find you a T-shirt. jg

What a great time. I only bumped into a few SC members, but joined many of the events. First time for me for the bomb drop, landing and poker run events.

The bomb drop was the most fun and was tied for 2nd for a while, but not sure how it ended. I saw a bullseye which changed the ranks. I saw Amy's name on the trophy twice from past years!

I only had king high on the poker hand so handed that in early, and of course had no chance in beating the ace/eight full house that won.

I heard I was third at one point for the landing event, but again not sure how it ended. Anyone know who won it?

I also found out I was running my C-85 at much too low rpm at cruise according to Don from Don's Dream machines which gave a big change in mph on the way back home. The flyouts with close to 30 Cubs was a blast. Some photos.

Are there any other events with flyouts like this over the summer in the NE area?

    Thanks,

    Hey Dave,
Good seeing you. You need to put Phil Zincks Rumford Maine on your NE list this year. I hear it is scheduled for 10-12 August. Great camping and beautiful Maine flyouts.
