    Cub Homecoming Sentimental Journey

With all the hype about Cubs to Oshkosh I hope that we all remember to pay homage to the birth place of most of the airplanes that we love to fly. I like going to Oshkosh every year but I drive a 1000 miles to get there. I have flown my Pa11 to Wisconsin from here but it was to go to another grassroots flyin at Brodhead WI. I like Kosh but I don't want to have my plane there, I go to flyins to fly, some times 3 or 4 times a day, that's not going to happen at Oshkosh. SJ is one of if not the best FLYING flyin in the country, not only my opinion but everyone who go's to a bunch of flyins each year, even a EAA vintage director thinks so. SJ is celebrating the 75th year of the Cub, the airplane this forum is dedicated to, the airplane that is not only loved but is like a parasitic flesh eating disease to some of us. So you want to go to Oshkosh that's ok but you owe it to your plane to return it to a little piece of heaven nestled between the majestic hill of central Pa first. Give your self time to get there, some show up the weekend before, I always try to get there by Wed because that's when the Big Band music starts in the pavilion where some of the best hangar stories ( lies ) are told and a little bit of adult beverage might be consumed Meet at LockHaven and you will have alot more friends by the time you get to Oshkosh.

Not to be a hair splitter, but if you can tear yourself away from hanging with the big dawgs at KOSH you are welcome to put her on rubber and come on over to NH. I'll even let you share a tent with Tim. He doesn't kiss and tell anymore!! If the weather will ever cooperate I will be at SJ. Back to back years now the Atlantic ocean has shut us off from VFR and no more scud running down through those mountains anymore. If push comes to shove I'll drive the PU. If len Buckel at age 85 can make it in his J-3 from San Diego---anyone can make it and indeed it is a great time---bring warm clothes!!

Glenn I think that you have diagnosed that habit correctly??

    Glenn,
SJ is on my list to do this year. After trying to find Ohio this year it will be a piece of cake. Tim can come this year too and follow me this time.

Hey Glenn, I couldn't have said it better myself. You know I'll be there, and the first round is on you. And while I'm at it, I'd like to clarify something for those concerned about the possible loss of parking...and I do say possible. If any of the parking up by the museum is lost, we are well prepared for that. If we have to cut a hole in the fence and park the displaced planes in the field where the campers have always been, that's what we will do. In fact, those planes will be even closer to the venders, etc than they were up by the museum. The campers will be put in the upper field. The owners of the hangers and land on the N. side of the runway have graciously given us the use of their land as well, if it is needed. We have plans in place to accommodate those pilots, should that happen. We have always and will always do the very best we can to make sure every person who attends SJ has a good experience here and goes home very glad they attended. I hope you can all make it to the home of the J-3 for the 75th birthday of both.

What are the dates for sentimental journey?

    Tom
    Tom Ford

  9. #9
Hi Tom, The dates for Sentimental Journey to Cub Haven are: Wed. June 20th - Sat. June 23rd, 2012. And yes...we love and welcome all planes, not just Pipers! See you there.

  10. #10
The offical dates are June 20-23rd, 2012:, Wed-Sunday, but a bunch show up early and hang out till it starts. You can camp under the wing,( they have showers ) or stay at a motel or B&B. SJ has a volunteer shuttle service that will take you and pick you up anywhere you want to go for a small gas donation. the food is very inexpensive, the bar in the worlds best Cub BS pavilion is a donation bar and has live music Wed, Thur, and Friday night and a banquet at the Museum on Sat evening. Every afternoon at 5pm they have a corn boil for .50c an ear, The corn comes from a couple hundred miles south and to keep the price at .50 a long time SJ friend Fred Jackson who things that SJ is the best place on earth donates money each year to pay the shipping to keep the corn price at .50 even lf he can't make the flyin. There is a great swimming area over in the clean clear river that you can walk to or get a ride over to. You don't have to come in a Cub but it's nice if you can, SJ gets all kinds of aircraft, from E2 Cubs to P51 and DC-3. You can even come on straight floats and land in the river. The one thing that happens at SJ is that folks are flying from Dawn patrol to wayyyyyy past sunset and the Pa high ridges and narrow valleys beg for little yellow airplanes to hedge hop it's many fields and fence rows. If enough people show interest they will arrange for a Bus to go to Williamsport and do a tour of the Lycoming factory. Sorry you just asked for the dates, can you tell that I like LockHaven.

Not sure, I like going on floats but I miss doing all the fly outs with everybody else. I might bring Dan's J3 if I get the paintball guns mounted on the jury struts it would be fun to chase Farris around.

Don't forget your seat belt for the picnic tables. It's fun to watch you completely lose it after your first beer

I'm still kicking around the idea of throwing a birthday party for my cub there this year- she will turn 72 on the Thursday, and figured it would be fun to get a cake, a keg, and party hats. I need to call the organizers and see what they think- I could even turn it into some sort of fund raiser for the fly-in.

Since I have never been and it was just mentioned that you could go with floats.......has anybody ever gone on straight floats?....How are the docking facilities? Good water for heavy take-offs? How far from the field to the docking facilities. Did you regret going on floats? I was planning on deferring the float installation until OSH.

So are all the new england (and new Yorkers) going down?

  17. #17
Hi Glenn, I guess with all the talk on how much of a light weight you are, I better not forget my camera. Anyways, everything you said in your post yesterday was correct except the banquet venue...it is held in the commercial vendor bldg. The vendors are out of there in time for the ladies to set up the tables, etc. The bar remains open during the banquet for those who don't attend, and is only a few yards away for those at the banquet who wish to have adult beverages with their meal! The food vendors stay open during the banquet for those who don,t attend.

Plenty of room on the river, taking off to the west you can run on the water for maybe a mile and once off you can stay with the river if you have to. I'll post the airport link and you can go to the aerial photo and zoom in and out for a looksee. Most times I go 100' over the west bridge and land toward the island and then land or taxi on the channel on the south side of the island. We beach them just south of the w tip of the island, there is a car path that goes up over the dike so when I land I call transportation and by the time I've got the plane tied down they are there to pick me up. Clyde Smith loans us a bunch of fuel cans that you can fill with 100ll and transportation will run you back and forth with the gas. It's no big deal, I hop rides every day. One thing you have to be careful with is LHV is a nontypical pattern that's on the North side and we are landing under the pattern sometimes going the wrong way, I just use a 200' pattern to come and go. This will be my 5th year on floats and most years I'm the only one but one year there were 5 of us. If you click on the satellite view photo it will enlarge and you can look around.

Here's an update on a few things happening at Sentimental Journey this year. Greg Koontz and the Alabama Boys will be performing their J3 Cub FLYING comedy act on Wed, Thurs and Fri. Guest speaker for the banquet on Sat night will be Bradley E. Smith, Commander O-5, US Navy. Forced to eject over N. Vietnam while flying his 77th combat mission on March 25, 1966, he was captured and held a POW by the North Vietnamese until his release, during Operation Homecoming on Feb. 12, 1973. His accounts of those 7 long years will keep his audience spellbound. Stardust will be back by popular demand, playing their music from the WWII era, to entertain you while you dine. Wed night will be a swing band, Thurs night the Lindy Sisters will be back, and Fri night SCC Variety will be playing something for everyone. Of course, corn on the cob is still 50 cents an ear, thanks to Fred's donation. The bomb drop, poker run and spot landing competitions will go on. A word to the men....hone-up your skills, last year the women ruled. We are in the process of putting our t-shirts and gift shop on our web site, and the latest newsletter is there. Keep checking it for updates...www.sentimentaljourneyfly-in.com. The e-mail address is: j3cub@kcnet.org, in case you have any questions. Hope to meet and greet you all...should be a great year.

I heard there's going to be a door prize every day for those who register their aircraft for free AV gas starting with 10 gallons on the first day upto 40 gallons on day the last day.

  21. #21
SJ is a great Flyin that some years ends up in the red. Even if I won the gas I'd give it back to them. There a a bunch of us who try to help out so that the flyin can break even. There are alot of people in the back round that work all year for free to keep this one of the best " FLYING " Flyins in the country. If you've never been your missing a great time with a fun group from all over the country and a few that make the trip from all over the world.

Just trying to do my part http://www.j3-cub.com/smf/index.php?topic=7416.0

    Hi guys & gals,
Wanted to update you on a few more things for SJ...Yes, a very generous individual has donated fuel and banquet tickets for the fly-in. He shall remain anonymous, and our thanks go out to him! Also, disregard the article in the newsletter about charging non-members a small entrant fee to have their airplanes judged. The board has reconsidered that idea, and decided NOT to charge the entrant fee. And please DO NOT send any money to pay for camping, that is paid upon arrival. Until next time...be safe. Hope to meet everyone of you who attend this year.

The last I heard, the New Enland group was stopping at my place (OH82) on the way home for a couple days of Ohio Bush Plane grass strips and fields after Sentimental Journey. So anyone headed west is welcome at Graham Field in eastern Ohio for a lay over.jg

You may want to consider the celebration next year as well.

The Cub began in Bradford PA. before the fire & moving to Lock Haven.

The University of Pennsylvania @ Bradford currently is on the site.

Next year is the University's anniversity there & they will be commemorating the Cub.

    Planning stages yet.

I plan on flying the Super Cub to Lock Haven this year. It's been a few years since I've been to SJ, and I'm looking forward to returning.

    John,
My plan is to get to KLHV Tuesday evening, but I'm coming in from KCXY. I'll goto Ohio whenever, with whomever is making that trip, then head to KCMH (or someplace more suitable for a cub, but close to Columbus) when everyone leaves for the weekend.

Cub Homecoming Sentimental Journey June 20 -23

Just bumping my post from back in Jan.

OK folks it's that time of year where I try to lure you to fly your Cub to Lock Haven Pa, hell you can fly anything that will get you to Lock Haven if you can't make it in a Cub, we welcome all to one of the best flyins in the country. Sentimental Journey is not just a flyin but more of a family reunion for friends from all over the country. Just to keep you motivated our good friend Len Buckel from the San Diego area will once again make the trek to Lock Haven, a trip that he has made over 15 times, 2300+ miles each way, in a J3. The seat in a J3 sucks and even 3 or 4 hrs in a J3 reshapes your butt into something even a yoga instructor respects. It takes Len between 32 to 40 hrs each way to get and return from lock Haven but he does it because it's the most fun he has each year in an airplane. Sooooooooooo if you think it's too much trouble for you to get to Lock Haven to enjoy the camaraderie of Cub pilots from not only the USA but from all over the world and try to deal with the fickle weather that the North East can delivery and still make it to LHV think about this, Len is 81 this year and will make it to LHV for the start of the flyin, as Clint Eastwood would say " Well punk, do you have it in ya to make it also, well do ya "

I'm going to try and make it just to meet Len Buckel, I have always enjoyed reading his stuff in cub clues and that alone is enough reason to go. I have only been to SJ once and it is one of the best fly ins ever. I'm trading my trip to Oshkosh for SJ.

  36. #36
I just mowed up these (video) auxiliary strips on my place (OH82 – eastern Ohio) for whoever wants to try them out.

Can't wait! Never been to Lockhaven despite the best of intentions. This year it's on for sure! Dana and I are just trying to get the logistics figured out of how to get the RV (camper not the plane) and the Super Cub there!
