Olibuilt 's New Cub project

Decided to give a try at fabricating those gap seals for the tail section. I always tough they were selling them way too much $$...

So it started out with pipe insulation foam tubing

So I fabricated a little hot wire setup, with some fishing leader material (realized afterward I could have used some safety wire, or vice versa for fishing?...)
The hot setup was made to cut the foam.

Setup was plugged with a 12v charger at 2 amps.

After a little spay on adhesive to glue them together, it almost looked like a non-perfect gap seal to me. The bottom glued itself together when installed

Once installed, it was grey, feather light, filled some gaps, took about 3 hours in research, development, and fabrication... And they cost less than nothing.

No glue on the airplane. They looks very well there when elevator is moving. We will see after a couple flight....

Hope this helps..... help you saving $ for gas...

Oli,

Very nicely done! Always good to save money and come up with such an effective solution. I'll tuck it away in my little brain.

BTW, I called the US rep (Pete) for your paint company and he was a nice guy but I never heard from him after we hung up. I have been using Stewarts and it is very acceptable so I will probably go that route, but I do wish they had a brighter orange.

Fly low and safe!!!

I'm in the process of building a new landing gear setup for the cub. I already have a 6'' extended, but a little more angle of attack would be great.

So I was planning for 3'' to 6'' higher.

My biggest question is should I bring the axles forward 3'' having a 68 pound tail in the W&B ?? It would be nice to have more braking capability when playing around empty.

Thank you

Oli, looks like you have it figured out. Let us know how they work out

They were holding great until I lost 2 in one flight...

Olibuilt, one of our gears was built by Wayne Mackey and is extended 13" and also raked forward. I don't know how much it's raked forward but I can take some measurements if you like. When we got the airplane it had a rigid suspension but Wayne told me it originally had a suspension. If we end up running the gear and decide to run a suspension we'll probably have Steve Furjesi build another elastomeric puck system. Let me know if you need measurements.

Thanks D.A.

I've been checking some possibilities. I think I will go with 3'' forward and about 5'' more lift than the 6'' extended gear, and another 6'' wider.

I have the time to think, I'm waiting the 1.5'' axles from Javron.

I think that's pretty close to what our gear is.

Any idea how wide it is between the inside of the axles? Has the turning radius changed significantly with the gear moved forward?

Just received the axles from Javron. At 42$ a piece, 1.5'' axle, axle nut and brake bracket tacked welded, can't get better than that.

Very nice piece, and shipping to Canada was very fast.

So the new suspension setup will be on the way!

The beer don't come with the kit.

But a Canadian Budweiser beer is pressed fitted on the 1.5'' axle. Physic is awesome.

I'll give a try with an airshock setup. I hope I won't be disappointed... Or tuning pressure and oil for the rest of my life...

I was going to stay it's not a Canadian beer at all.. must be a Kabec thing! lol

I had a Colorado pilot drop by for a visit the other day, he had some real nice looking gap seals, and sent me the link for where to get them. He claims a 1 mph increase in cruise speed. He did pretty rigorous testing before and after to back that claim up. They sure seem like they should clean things up back there, he had them on both sides of his rudder and the top side of his elevator. Rans S7-S. I like your home made ones! www.wingsandwheels.com/tapes-seals/mylar.html

Are you happy with your landing gear suspension now that you've run it for a while? Would love to see some more pictures and hear some details, ex: make of shocks you used, tubing size/thickness, etc. Really enjoy watching your videos on youtube also, keep them coming. Thanks, Joel

Suspension is working perfectly. I'm now at 330psi with max oil capacity in the Fox 10'' airshocks (old model stock Super Stol shocks). Landing gear is built like a 3'' HD extended, but one thickness thicker.

Don't have many rock beaches around here. Manage to find.

(doesn't work on phone or tablet)
My first rock landings when flood watching:

Nothing new. Just playing in the corn.

But I'm still looking forward for bigger elevator, ans maybe a flap dump system. But theese days, USD to CDN is a real stopper for modification.

Nice Oli!!

Where I grew up you make corn into whiskey and never feed it to the chickens!

Great song..! Great filming....! Great acting...! At least I hope that was "acting"....! Hahaha

What if some little bugger ate 8 stitches on 2 ribs next to each other? So about 32 knots near the wing tip.....

Dam little animal, I think he is even smoking in the wing.....!?

Can you pull the tape off and rivet the fabric or use a pk screw ? Is this your cub Oli?

I needed a pair of straight skis for next winter. I bought a very cheap homebuilt set. I don't fly very often on skis, and they could do the job without any mods. Skis looks to be ok, But the pedestral part of the ski is very ugly and has way to much "camber".

I know those skis cannot be compared with the CarbonConcept one... But I am thinking removing this horrible oversize "pedestral" and fabricate a steel tubing pedestarl about 12" in height.

What do you think?

Those are beautiful...I was afraid you were talking about the sewer pipe.

I just did a 900 mile Harley trip thru MT, SK, AB and BC and when I got back it was a lot cheaper than I thought I had spent. I suppose the other way around would be less satisfying.

Wouldn't raising the pedestal place a lot of stress on the ski attach point?
