Robert Odegaard's "Tribute to Bob Hoover"

As many who attended Airventure know, Robert Odegaard of Kindred, ND flew a Shrike Commander at Oshkosh as part of the EAA "Tribute to Bob Hoover" on Tuesday of the airshow. Robert is a consummate pilot, but he didn't fly the full Hoover routine at OSH. He forwarded a message last night, with a link to a video. The text of his message was to the effect that he gave himself a birthday gift at the recent Fargo ND airshow--he flew the both engines shut down routine that Bob Hoover made famous...

    Here's a link to the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o50A_nTa7b4

    Pretty impressive flying.

Really nice video, Mike, thanks for sharing this. My daughter said the Fargo air show was a good one, but didn't mention this performance. What a great tribute to Mr. Odegaard's skills, and to Bob Hoover's innovation and skills. Awesome video. Thanks, again.

It's nice that someone is honoring Bob Hoover, but nothing flies like a Hoover, never has and nothing will ever again, that mold was hammered out in the great depression, tempered in WWII and has simmered like a fine wine for half a century. If you were lucky enough to see the real MaCoy you will understand that what I say is sad but true. Hail to the King of aviation, Bob Hoover. Most of us that love to fly skill level wouldn't amount to a pimple on his seat of the pants feel for an airplane.

    Glenn,

You need to meet Robert Odegaard, then. Robert had very poor eyesight as a child, but he used to HEAR the DC-3s flying over the family farm, between Sioux Falls and Fargo, and dreamed of flying. He was told he could never fly, due to his eyesight, so became an A & P to be close to airplanes. Finally, he found an instructor who told him to go for it and finish his private license, which he did. Eventually, he had eye surgery and now has much better vision.

But, his dreams and trials as a child prompted him to create Duggy, the DC-3 Smile in the Sky, which he flies to airshows and other events, in an effort to interest young people in aviation. Duggy has one role in life: To convince young people that they too can fly. Here's the Duggy web site: http://www.duggy.com/

Robert has pretty good flying skills, and his tribute is intended to honor Mr. Hoover, not to imitate him. Robert is quite a gentleman, by the way. Robert's son Casey is also quite the gentleman as well, and often flies Duggy with his Dad. Every day's airshow at OSH starts with Duggy dropping the skydivers to start the show.

Sorry Mike I was not trying to take anything away from Robert Odegaard, from what I saw of him at Oshkosh it looked good enough that alot of us were thinking that it could have been Hoover doing the flying and Odegaard acting as check pilot to make Hoover legal. I didn't know Duggy was his creation and it does it's job very well as it always puts a big smile on my face everytime I see it. It's just that Bob Hoover set a mark that most of if not all of us well never get to enjoy.

so calm. Look at his face at the 1:45 area...

Then watch his hands turning final at the end.

Guess his adrenaline was working then.

I bet this guy can set his watch with anything going on!
I don't know where you've been me lad, but I see you won first Prize!
