    L21B Ground Power Socket install

I know that I have posted a thread about the GPU before but now I have a new question. I need some info and pictures of how the actual socket is attached to the battery shelf and the fuselage fabric. And how the socket supports the outer frame/door. I have drawn a diagram of how I think it should be but I can't figure how to make it happen. The socket does not have any screw holes in the flange to indicate that the outer frame/door was screwed to the socket assembly.

So--how was the outer door/frame assembly attached to the fuselage???

What keeps the outer door from falling in to the fuselage (there are no stops to keep the outer door aligned with the frame)

The outer door has a buttom that has to be pressed in order to open the door--but you have to press pretty hard to make it work--if that door frame is not attached to something substantial then you may rip the fabric when it is pressed!!!

Someone told me that there is supposed to be a plastic frame that fits behind the outer door/frame with the fabric between the two and the outer frame is screwed to the inner plastic frame--but that does not seem strange enough.
I have attached some pictures that I hope will help to answer my questions.

I have a 1954 L21B with the Socket installed - I'll try to get to the hanger tonight and get you some pictures.

Thanks--I started this project AFTER someone else had disassembled the aircraft so there are a lot of things that I have questions about. Nothing like getting handed a bunch of UNMARKED boxes and saying "here you go--put thus back together"!!!!

I removed my battery box and plug setup from my L21 cub and left it at Steve Pierces place. Knowing him it's still upstairs at on a shelf in his shop. I still have the door on the side of the fuse. It's a metal grommet with a fabric patch over the top and the door screws onto that. The door stays with the fabric until you recover the plane.

I weighed every electrical system related component that I removed and it was just at 100lbs for all that crap.

It looks like the socket body will backup the door frame if the socket is firmly attached to the shelf. Glue the socket and fabric together as the opening and use plastic or aluminum as a backing to screw the doorframe to the fabric.

There is a PDF on the L21B at this link - it may help http://www.supercubproject.com/downl...t_Handbook.pdf

That's what I thought too--but the angle of the socket does not match the angle of the fabric on the fuselage. I guess that I could try to match the two by shimming the socket to match the fabric--but I would need to make sure that the socket is not sticking out too much or I will have a bulge on that side of the fuselage-(likewise, if I have the socket positioned in towards the center of the fuselage too much--then I will have a dent there)

    Decisions--decisions!!!

Thanks for that link--however it does not answer my question--if you could still get me some pictures of your GPU--door, socket, etc that would be great!!

You say that the door is still on the fuselage--what keeps the door from falling in towards the inside of the fuselage??? I looked at my door assembly and I don't see any stop on it that would keep the door flush with the fuselage???

Ha, are you saying I am a pack rat. I will get it out and take some pictures.

I took some pictures this afternoon of my ground power socket, access them at: https://public.me.com/schulerjl Password:supercub My plane was restored by T&M Aviation, Abbeville, LA in December of 2007. 337-893-9074, Chris Daigle was incharge of the restore, he would know most about how the power outlet was placed. The pictures are large files. Let me know if they help or if you need any more information.

Wow!! great pictures--they really are a BIG help!!! Thanks for taking them and giving me the other information. The wiring was done by a pro--nice job. Great looking airplane--

Let me know if you need any other pictures or information - glad to help!

And thanks to jgerard for letting me know that I have 100 pounds of useless crap on my plane - I could have gotten the 50 inch double secret Alaskan Bushwheels and landed in used car lots at monster truck shows.

  15. #15
Aww heck, SchulerJL, as both Jason and Steve Pierce know, there's 160# of useless crap in MY L-21B, but ONLY when I'm sitting in the front seat

    Great string, by the way.

    Thanks. cubscout

Question--your plane has three solenoids--the one I am working on originally had only two. Do you have any idea why that might be??? Is your plane a certified airplane???

  17. #17
What's a solenoid? Is that what hurts when I am sitting on the kings throne reading a
Trade-a-Plane? Seriously - I don't know why I would have an extra - other than it makes my plane heavier. It does give me another excuse to go out and look tomorrow, even though it will be t-storms tomorrow here in Illinois - I can hear it now - "honey, I need to go to the airport and count my planes solenoids". "but it's raining? Bring the Preparation H just in case you have too many"

So I guess that means that I should call Chris Daigle--Right!!!!

P.S. My plane is certified - so certified I am pondering the legality of using an EClip to hold my upper door open. Do I need a field approval for that?

What is your planes serial number???

  21. #21
Yeah, you should probably talk to Chris - he is a really nice person - and knows the whole history on my plane - I just acquired it a month ago and am still learning about L21's. When I was looking into buying it my first question was - what's that outlet for? Plugging in a blender? Really? You could? Sold!!!

  22. #22
    Serial # 18-3589

  23. #23
Your are real close to the one I am working on (18-3511)--I will have to check and see if there was a change in the electrical system between the two numbers. I have so many drawings (some that I can actually read the fine print--some I can't) I have to check them out as well. Thanks for your help!!!

  24. #24
Wow that is close! Must have been built within a few weeks of each other - let me know if you need anything - be glad to helpb

Seeing that you are so good with a camera (and at your convenience--no hurry) could you take some pictures of the rear seat--and the area behind the rear seat--how is the rear seat back attached to the fuselage at the top (I know that there are two pins at the bottom of the seat back frame that fit into the tube below) --does your plane have an extended bagagge compartment??? Is there a cover shelf behind the rear seat that covers the original bagagge compartment??? Also pictures of the wiring location as it goes from the battery box area to the front. Like I said there is no hurry on this--so please don't make a special trip.

  26. #26
No problem - I'll take a few pictures tomorrow - if the weather improves. It's great to document things like that anyway, hopefully I will have time someday to restore one. It does have an extended baggage. There is no shelf behind the reat seat covering the original baggage, it is open behind the rear seat - makes the big window look even cooler.

I posted some new pictures of my baggage compartment and battery compartment. Access as before: https://public.me.com/schulerjl Password: supercub If you need any other views, let me know

Thanks again for the great pictures--they are helping me a lot!!!! It is so good to see what things "should" look like instead of trying to visualize by looking at a parts catalog!!! I have attached some pictures of the Cub that I am working on.

Excellent looking project! Let me know if you need any other photos. I would love to have the opportunity to do what you are doing. Barely enough time to fly it - let alone build it - count youself fortunate

I spoke with Chris Daigle and he will try to answer my questions however, he did mention that he actually started working on the plane after someone else had started the project. He did tell me that there should be a wiring diagram that went with the airplane when it was finished. Do you have that wiring diagram--if so I would really like to see that (maybe some pictures of it???)
