Whats the differance between a Fram 2220 and a fram ca122pl

  7. #7
    Fram doesn't list a 2220

2220 is a NAPA equivalent part number.

Why not? It worked fine on my -12 (supercub round filter). On the Cessna I've gone from stock to Brackett to K&N to Donaldson (paper filter). The best performer is the Donaldson, who coincidentally is the current Cessna OEM supplier. I have never seen a restriction that tells me I can't fly in the rain and in fact Donaldson paper filters are washable in water. I wouldn't wash a Cub's standard paper filter but i wouldn't hesitate to use one on floats if I was inclined to fly floats again.

My next Cub filter will be a Donaldson.

Might only be the bug round one, but I remember there being some AD or other issue like that that required me to have foam for floats.

Not saying they do not work, but there was a long discussion to ensure mine was foam to be legal.

Look at the Donaldson site ( http://www.donaldson.com/en/aircraft/ga/ ) for airflow statistics and comparisons as well as filtration standards. They're PMA'd on all PA-18 "S" variants. Seaplane legal. Life limited to 3 years, 500 flight hours, or 5 washings, whichever comes first. I have a Brackett and 2 Challengers (K&N) sitting on the shelf for the Cessna. They're obsolete.

    Info:
Cub Parts book, page 94, item #97.
    Cartridge, Air Filter, P/N 454-118, Code "D".
Code "D" says (Not used on sea planes.)
This is one of the "minor" items that is unknown or ignored by most folks.

I've never used a Piper air filter cartridge so I guess I've complied.

What should be used with the Penn Yan 180hp on floats rather then the paper? K&N ?? Part numbers anyone.

My Cessna installation is noted in a logbook entry. There's an obvious flaw in the Donaldson applications list. The filter listed for ALL Supercubs is the same model shown for Cessna 150s. That means the square intake. I tried to call about a PMA round filter but it was too late in the day to reach anyone. I'll try tomorrow and will post the result.

Is there a cross reference anywhere from Bracket to Donaldson?

George, I'm not planning to put it on the floats!
Seriously (for a moment) thanks for that, Bart told me the same thing. Lucky for me that I have such good adult supervision.
I'll just clean up my foamie.

SB, Bart said flying in rain is OK, but if it gets a big splash (soaked) it will restrict the airflow. (Not a GoodThing on TO.

Since the parts book is not an FAA approved document, the TC is what one needs to refer to legally.

    110. Paper air filter installation (Fram CA-122PL) installed in accordance with Piper Dwg. 15013.
Eligible on Lycoming O-230 series engines only.
Not eligible when Item 209(b) is installed.

    (b) Edo 89-2000 floats and water rudder in accordance with Edo Dwg. 14390 or 69470. +179 lb. (+17)

Legally, if you have another type float installation and it doesn't specify the type air filter, you are legal to use it. Maybe not smart, but legal.

Of course there is another way to look at it. An AI approving the installation of an STC has to make sure that it is compatible with the Current configuration of the airplane. Could he legally aprove a Float installation STC knowing the airplane has the paper filter????

    Brian,

Thank you for pulling my fat out of the fire again!!!

If you feel so inclined, wolves are legal to shoot here, even from great distances. We are allowed five a year, or unlimited on a trapping license around here...

You are welcome any time to join me in collection of these. Sleds plane and Argo ready in winter.

Interesting thread. I am looking at a Super Cub filter - looks like a big screen can with the ends open. OD is 6", length is maybe 8 1/2" plus, and the inner diameter of the rubber ends is 4 3/4".

Is this the same as the standard cylinder for the Super Cub? Do any of the above part numbers work for this thing? It is on the CC 180 hp conversion.

Answered my own question with your part #s above.

    Donaldson P524348 - same dimension - $8.89 each.

I am sold on moving to the Donaldson filter, but I am having doubts as I am about to pull the trigger. Just curious, but why does the Donaldson website list their round air filter that I assume would fit my cub as an automotive filter? I cant seem to find the Donaldson P524348 filter on any airplane part websites.

This is what I was looking at:
    https://dynamic.donaldson.com/webc/WebStore/search/item_detail.html?section=10061&item=5751

I am slightly hesitant to buy something that isn't perfectly kosher since I am trying to sell my cub.
    (Looking forward to going experimental.)
