Here it is. Annual Hunting Thread 2011 Version

I thought it was time to get this thread kicked off!

Spring turkey hasn't yet arrived but I did run across this picture of our single best day of coyote hunting this winter. Eight in one day was our record. Lots of snow meant quite a few days on snowshoes.

Looks like a great day! Are you calling, stalking or running hounds?

  4. #4
We try to spot for the first hour or so of the a.m. and then walk sections on snowshoes. Our country is mostly farmland with small woodlots intermixed.

StewarB, I'll try to get SJ to merge these threads. Sorry...

    Kyle,
Are you using a rifle or Shotgun? Just curious. Most of the 'yotes up in my area are of the unobtainium variety. The wolfs have pretty much displaced all the little dogs we had many years ago. 20 years ago the yipping would start before sunset and last for quite awhile, now I rarely if ever here them. Do get to hear the occasional Wolf howl though. Just waiting for the DNR to get off the fence and open season.

WW - I've pretty much hung up the 22-250 and switched to the black .223. Ugly and heavy but effective. Our crew all shoots them and our success has increased.

The yotes have definitely had an impact at reducing our fox population.

And I'm with you in wondering when (if) the Feds will again be allowed to open a wolf season. I think it prudent to allow one. I've seen the negative impact in Idaho and Montana as well as the impact to our Northern MN deer herd.

I hear that BC has just eliminated the "bag limit" for wolf here. Now it's "shoot all ya want".

Be nice if our US wolves would move to BC. We can only watch the wolves decimate farm and wildlife populations. All my old Elk spots are run over with wolves. Endangered - hardly.

[h=Man stole friend's identity to hunt bear]2[/h] Posted by crimeblog

    From Kyle Hopkins --
A Florida man who stole a friend’s identity to illegally kill a brown bear in Alaska –- then complained about the hunt because he wanted a bigger bear -- has been sentenced to pay more than $66,000 in penalties.
People get in trouble for breaking hunting and fishing laws in Alaska all the time. But this case has at least one unusual twist.
Jack Vincent Dickerson, 35, illegally killed a female brown bear on Oct. 1, 2009, in Game Management Unit 9 and had the bear made into a rug, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office. But after the hunt, still using the false identity, Dickerson complained to Cabela’s Outdoor Adventures about the quality of the hunt.
He’d wanted a 10-foot trophy male instead, he said. In order to get his money back, Dickerson then told his credit card company that the charges for the hunt were made by someone else.

Dickerson pleaded guilty and was sentenced Aug. 11 to pay $50,000 for one felony count of violating the Lacey Act and felony identity theft. He must also pay $15,150 in restitution to Cabela’s Inc. and $1,300 in restitution to the state of Alaska, the U.S. Attorney’s office says.

Dickerson had used his friend's name to apply online for a hunting license and bear tag because he previously killed a bear in GMU 9 under his own name and was not yet eligible for another hunt, according to prosecutors.

    Read the charges here.

Pete, you did very well. Congratulations on the Ram. I am headed up on the south side of the Brooks Range next week for a caribou. I hope to have some pics when I get back. While I was flying out fishing last week I noticed your plane was gone. Looks like you had fun.

September is finally here. Have the cameras up and rolling. Decent deer, and bears in the area. One quite large blackie. The wolves are here too. A few bruins from the past couple weeks. I'm ready for fall. OOOps didn't mean to get the Ellis 12 in the thread.

    mineral

What product did you use where the ground was clear-pawed? Is there also a food plot there and if so, what plants are your favorites. Trying to come up with something that works in latitude 50. Thanks for your thoughts.

I use trace mineral salt and Dicalcium phosphate mixed 50/50. These come #50 per bag. I place about #30 per lick and have about 6 licks esablished on 240 acres. Just dig a shallow depression and pour on the stuff. After early June I refreshen the licks with this stuff. http://www.yeoldearcheryshoppe.com/i...al-p-4275.html.
The activity picks up considerable when this stuff hits the ground. It costs more money than the feed store solution so I resort to using a little of both. I am convinced that this grows heavier and larger antlers in my region.

Based on your handle, I am only about 150 miles south of you if Dinorwic is where you live. Lake Wabigoon area??

I am slowly working towards getting some food plots put in and want to get the minerals started. Seems to be a lot more information about those subjects farther on south, which is why I asked, since you are in about the same zone. The last two years the wolves have been awful, not helping the cause.

Yes, I live on the very east side of that lake system on Dinorwic Lake.

    Thanks for the info.

Hi, my name is Piper. I love to find birds for anyone that will hunt with me. My owner will fly me to any place in Montana to hunt with like minded individuals. Does anyone know of the whereabouts of birds for me to find?

The leaves are down. 50 mph winds in Oct. tend to do that. The Ruffed grouse are now at a serious disadvantage without the leaf clutter. Crispy walking on dry days cues them off that we are coming. A 5 bird day sunday followed by filleted breasts floured and panfried in butter with Dill Weed and Lemon Pepper

Becky and I had a great time in WY hunting antelope. We saw plenty but had a hard time finding something really big. She shot the best one we saw. Too warm!

Deer season is only a 2 weeks away. After that ramps up grouse is on the back burner, the dogs turn in to couch potatoes, and we search out that mature whitetail. Had some luck in the north woods the past few days despite the wind machine.

Just 26" long. It is a .338. The bear is 8.5 feet square but Logan is right, it looks really skinny.
