Thread: Drift HD170 - My review from a pilots perspective

  1. #281
I've actually had some trouble with my remotes. I have 2 drift stealth and three remotes and none of them have the advertised range from inside the aircraft to the camera outside. I can get them to turn on up to about 2 meters thru but to turn off again nothing more than a meter away works. I've gone thru about 9 remote batteries, they don't last very long. all my experiments have been in aluminum airplanes so maybe that's part of it. I'm going to get with one of the radio guys I work with and see if we can boost the signal from the remote. My Original goal with the camera was to be able to turn it off and on out on the wingtip, no go so far.

It's a great camera, sure hope I can figure out my remote woes this summer. Here's something I did last summer.

Nice Video Sam. Brings back memories of my ride in the round engine Beaver on the round trip deal up to the San Juan Islands and back. Will be interested what you find out on the remote.

I have multiple Drifts, paired to operate from one remote. As long as I get them paired correctly they work great. I notice they respond differently to the remote. That is they don't turn on or off at the same instant. There's about a one second variation.

And a note of interest, I have to double tap the off button to stop recording. One push doesn't do it. I can't find anything in the Drift manual that talks about that but as long as it works I'm good with it. Also, when pairing multiple cams to one remote I seem to have at least one camera that won't operate as expected. Once I go through the pairing sequence if I power the camera down and turn it back on it works. The manual says nothing about powering it down but I stumbled on that one by accident. Another tip in case anyone gets frustrated.

Second attempt at a Drift video. Having a lot of fun learning.

This was my 40 minute joyride on Monday morning before I had to go to work.

Thanks Ranch Pilot. I needed that this morning after a hard day yesterday. Wish I could say it was ranch work but it was having to go to the dentist to repair a broken molar. That just drained me after 3 hours in the chair. Now I am going to pull the Cub (L-4) out run it up and take it over to the FBO for its annual. Then off to do ranch work which is way better than going to the dentist.

I hope you don't mind a shameless plug, but if anyone is looking, www.mypov360.com is offering a pretty good deal on a backcountry pilot package. Add "backcountry pilot" into the promo code and it will take another $30.00 off and give you free shipping to the lower 48.

I just picked up a Drift HD, I'll have to play with it and get a review up. The small size is impressive.

Great video! What is the camera/lens combination? Where did you put all the people?

  22. #302
Thanks! Original model Drift HD170, normal lens set at 740p, mounted on left strut using regular mount plate and a velcro strap. No filter, exposure set to 0. Most of the video is at 3x speed or more to fit as much in as I could. This is actually more than 20 minutes worth of video of flying along the rock walls.

In terms of people, there are still some places left in Wyoming where you can have beauty like this all to yourself!

For those who, like me, bought a GoPro HD Hero camera before the Drift HD170 was available:

The lack of a remote control was a major disadvantage. GoPro now has a WiFi remote.

    Google GoPro WiFi Remote.

Heres some video I shot yesterday with my Hero2 using the new wi-fi remote. One word to describe the new remote "AWESOME"

Neat video, What were all those boats fishing for on that river near the beginning of the video?

They were fishing for King Salmon. (chinook Salmon)

Video of my flight into the Winds the other day. Doesn't really do them justice from FL 14.5, but there was a little wind so I didn't want to be much lower than that in the middle of the big rocks. Area at the end is Green River Lakes.

Heres another video I shot this weekend. Much better quality, and different shot angles.

16 Bravo - Hey I like that rear looking camera location. Looks like a blast with your wing man back there. What size tires do you have? The ice looked a lot rougher then the camera bounces showed.

Thanks. Im running 35's. And it was a lot rougher than the camera showed. I like the shot of us coming up the river a lot. I have to go get more footage now. Makes me want another camera. $$$$$

very good quality for sure... anyway to change the exp setting on the Hero 2? i boosted my Stealth when behind the prop and it helped quite a bit with the warping... more like a blur now. can you snap a few pics of the mounts with camera attached? i'd sure like to see your setup!!
will be looking for more vids awesome!

Thanks, I will take some shots of my setup tomorrow. I am using a surfboard mount that is stuck to my skylight. It really works good, and is really low profile for when my camera is not mounted up. It has a tether cord to its own separate mount, just in case it ever lets go. Ron
