    9 months after the flight

    …9 months after the flight

Gunny decided to go flying with his buddy, Gordon. So they loaded up Gunny’s Cub and headed north.

After flying for a coupl’a hours, they got caught in a terrible storm. So they landed on a nearby farm and asked the attractive lady who answered the door if they could spend the night.

'I realize it's terrible out there and I‘m all alone in this huge house, but I'm recently widowed,' she explained. 'I'm afraid the neighbors will talk if I let you stay in my house.'

'Don't worry,' Gunny said. 'We'll be happy to sleep in the barn. And if the weather breaks, we'll be gone at first light.' The lady agreed, and the two men found their way to the barn and settled in for the night.

Come morning, the weather had cleared, and they took off & flew back home.

But about nine months later, Gunny got an unexpected letter from an attorney.
It took him a few minutes to figure it out, but he finally determined that it was from the attorney of that attractive widow he had met on the farm that weekend.

He dropped in on his friend Gordon and asked, ‘Geezer, do you remember that good-looking widow from the farm we stayed at on our flight up north about 9 months ago?'

    'Yes, I do.' Said Gordon.

'Did you, er, happen to get up in the middle of the night, go up to the house and pay her a visit?'

'Well, um, yes!' Gordon said, a little embarrassed about being found out, 'I have to admit that I did.'

'And did you happen to give her my name instead of telling her your name?'
Gordon's face turned beet red and he said,

'Yeah, look… I'm sorry, buddy. I'm afraid I did.' 'Why do you ask?'

'She just died and left me everything.’

Naah, he's a foot or so taller'n me. But then, maybe that's not what the widow noticed. Ok, St. Nimp, looks like YOU got some 'splainin to do - - Must be getting boring there in southern Canada, eh? You be nice, or I'm gonna come VISIT you, and demand that you take me FISHIN!!! And before you say it, not as the bait.

Well, I was told this story by a reputable friend of a neighbor's cousin's pen pal, who got it directly from a twitter user's hairdresser's avon rep who got an email from some attractive widow. Since it came originally from the internet, it's gott'a be TRUE, right??

Must be getting boring there in southern Canada, eh? You be nice, or I'm gonna come VISIT you,
Nope, never boring, but there ARE times when I haft'a think about what I'll do next. This story came to me from one of those "friends" who think the internet was designed so folks could send FWD: FWD: FWD: stuff to other fascinated friends. I thought it was cute, & decided to modify it a bit & post it here. Next prob. was WHO would be 'honored' with inclusion in the story. I figgered 'those two' who keep threatening to come up for the BCFA weekend, but never do. Ever hear a duck fart in shallow water?

and demand that you take me FISHIN!!! And before you say it, not as the bait.
Not to worry, we like to use FRESH bait.
Fishin' slows down a bit in July (from May-June) but it's still good. Hell, I've heard that even guys from Wash can catch 'em. We'll see.
Don't fergit your paperwork, so you'll be allowed back home!

Hey Nimpo - Good one. I don't mind you bustin' on me, especially after I razzed you over on the NOAA airspace restrictions thread, but you doesn't has to be dissin' my good friend Gordon. He's just mindin' his own business and rebuilding his 12 all quite like (unless there's stuff going on I don't know about). Like you he's been inviting me to drop by his place for a couple years now and I have made it there either - if that's any consolation. If you need a break from the BC winter you'd be welcome down here at the Puyallup Air Show in Feb - lot's of the Cub guys should be around.

I was gonna tell you that the real reason I haven't been able to make it up to Nimpo is because I get a terrible case of separation anxiety about having to leave my pistols behind when I go to Canada and that I'm working through it in therapy - but I figured that might not go over too well - so I left that out.

Truth is it boils down to life just continuing to get in the way and the best laid plans of mice and men keep going awry. Ole Bill Ingerson is making promises I hope I can keep about this summer - I really do want to get back up that way. Hard to believe that its been almost 5 years since I was up to Pan Phillips place with 85Mike. God willing and the schedules work - we might just get to shake hands this year. I sure hope so.

Yeah, I know. I can't seem to get excited about that. The BCFA has a booth there every year, dunno why it doesn't blow my skirt up.

There's really no prob. bringing handguns or explosives into Canada. You just tell the nice border (person) that your friend Muhammed asked you to take this package to his friend in Surrey/Vancouver.

I've learned that everything in life is about priorities. If your damn anniversary or wife's BD is more important than slapping skeeters on Nimpo, well, it'll be tough getting here.

Hard to believe that its been almost 5 years since I was up to Pan Phillips place with 85Mike.

Robbie & Linda are still doing well up there. I land there a few times a year to laff & BS w/em. They're real characters. One day I stopped to pick up their mail & asked the store lady what else they usually pick up. She said whiskey & ice cream. So I said throw those in the box too!

God willing and the schedules work - we might just get to shake hands this year. I sure hope so.

For whatever reasons her schedules don't work... bring her w/ya! God is willing, but beware that border guy!

Gunny and Geezer are a couple of SuperCub buddies who just finished a job on Geezer’s Cub.

Gunny said, 'Man, I wish we had something to drink!'

Geezer says, 'Me too. y'know, I've heard you can drink jet fuel and get a buzz.

    You wanna try it?'

So they pour themselves a couple of glasses of high octane booze and get completely smashed.

The next morning Gunny wakes up and is surprised at how good he feels.

In fact he feels GREAT! NO hangover! NO bad side effects. Nothing!

Then the phone rings & Geezer says, 'Hey, how do you feel this morning?'

Gunny says, 'That jet fuel is great stuff -- no hangover, nothing. We ought to do this more often.'

' Yeah, well there's just one thing.'

    'What's that?'

    'Have you farted yet?'

    'No.'

'Well, DON'T - cause I'm in New Zealand!'

Gunny.. Is Pan Phillips airport still there? I was there in the early 80's(?). Went with a bunch of other airplanes from Jefferson co. One of the party left his Cherokee in the lake (tried landing downwind, uphill, and after touching down over halfway down the runway attempted a go round which wound up behind the power curve and crossing the lake before turning and "plop"). I heard later that the young couple that ran (owned?) the place fished it out later, bought it from the insurance company, dried it off and flew it off the lake in the winter. Any chance it's the folks you mentioned?? dave

Pan Phillips went west in the 80's, his son Robbie/Linda still operate there, the strip is still good, and a lake on both ends. Pan & his wife have a nice memorial grave site there on one edge of the property. I drop in there a coupl'a times a year, here's a couple pix when we went in on sleds. Took most of a day & we stayed in (newer) cabins o'nite.

HomeRanch sign.jpgOld cabin... hope you can read the sign.

qsmx, I never heard the Cherokee story (but there's SOOO many) I can put you in touch w/Robbie if you like.

G & G, maybe see ya's this year. We're flying up to Yellerknife after our AGM weekend, the Midnight Sun flyin is the weekend after ours. (July 22-24) Ours is July 16-17 (See the SCub calendar)

Nimpo I'll dig the date out when I get near my log books again. It must have been Robbie and his wife running the place. I don't remember any "old" cabins so maybe I stayed in one of those in the picture. The lake the cherokee crashed in was the one on the "uphill" end of the runway. West?? of the runway. We had a great weekend anyway. No one hurt and the guy hired a charter to pick him and his passenger up when it was over. We fished around the Cherokee all weekend. Tail was sticking out of the water. I flew my then but now late father in law up with me. He loved aviation but wasn't a pilot himself. I still have the book somewhere they sold about Pan Phillips "The flying Cowboy" ?? I think it was.

Here's one of the "modern" cabins. Note how Robbie fixed the leaky roof!

Here's their house... (the addition is mostly level)

They're some of the more colorful characters around.
We're going in there again this weekend. A C180 is flying in the gas/beer/groceries tomorrow. Lots more snow this year.

Thanks for bringing the memories back nimpo! Ask about the Cherokee. Seems I remember offloading some gas for them but I'm not sure about that. I remember an Indian neighbor came over on his horse to visit while we were there. I took no pictures and only wrote "fishing trip" and the stops like Cambell river for fuel in my log book. When I was young I figured there would be many adventures so why document them. I think I sold the 172 shortly after that trip and was out of flying for over 20 years. They served dinner in the main house and I guess the "new" cabins must have been where we stayed. The owner (Robbie? I guess) smoked our catch in a small smoker building and it was the best fish I ever had!
