Texas Pilot question - safety on the Rio Grande River

My friend wants me to go on a 14 day canoe trip along the Rio Grande River - in the San Antonio area - 6 canoes and 12 people from Maine area. It sounds like fun but I notice that's not far from Falcon Lake where that womans husband was killed by Mexican Pirates. I'm guessing this might be a stupid trip for me to take however I thought I'd get some feedback from some of you who live down there. Is this a hot spot to stay away from or a safe and popular canoe spot?
    Thanks

    Cliff,
San Antonio is quite a ways from the Rio Grande. I grew up along the Rio Grande near McAllen. Judging from what my brother, the Border Patrol agent says, I would pass on this trip at this time. This sounds like a fun trip but is it worth your lives????? I have my concealed carry permit and always pack when I am visiting my friends and relatives in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. Nuff said.

Taking my sunburned QC manager into the 24 hour grocery store at 9PM, in McAllen for some much needed solarcain was enough to stop me from moving down and starting a new injection moulding facility there to feed TRW across the border... You could have heard a pin drop when we entered the store and the manager took us by the shoulders.. got us what we needed and opened a check out to get us out.. alive.. Night / Day segregation for shopping.. who would'a thought!!

I second what door gunner said, I lived in McAllen for several years and it was safe. But the last few years has changed alot everywhere on the border. Very bad idea to canoe the rio grande in texas.

Tell your buddies to come for a canoe trip in the arctic. We just have grizzly bears and polar bears to worry about, and you're allowed to put a bullet between their eyes if they give you any grief. Try that with a Mexican and there will be no end of paperwork!

Hey Cliff, before you head out on your trip why don’t you drop your supercub off at my house and your little black book off at JP’s house. And if you don’t return at least you know both of your cherished possessions will be well taken care of.

Cliff, This sounds like the perfect setting for a movie to me. Something like the movie "Deliverance" with Burt Reynolds.
If I had to pick one plane, it would be the Super Cub. Im going to build one and try to find a 180 to put in it. I will need your help. Thanks

Ok -Thanks all - I guess I'll stay home! I think my dad might have a heart attack if I go anyway. He's pretty worked up about my idea! He says he will NOT be paying any ransom if I get kidnapped. I think i'll work on plans to do the Allegash this summer in Maine - that sounds like a better use of my time.
Have a great day and thanks a bunch.

Cliff, I was drawing up plans to fly my J3 Cub around the border this spring and had to scratch it after the Falcon Lake incident. While I think that incident is more isolated, you can't deny that it's no longer safe ANYWHERE on the S. border these days. Not even the Hispanics go across to Mexico for meals and shopping. When people who have lived there no longer go "across", then you know it's bad.

There are tons of abandoned airstrips on the border, though.
