Ski Dolly pictures

Wow! now those are some awesome looking ski's, how much do they weigh? will he fab the towers for the same rise as 31" bush wheels? Randy makes some great products! thanks for the info on the locking collars...

I'll weigh them after I get the rigging finished. I think they'll be a bit over 30 pounds each. The axle height is a couple of inches shorter than 31" height. And they've got a big footprint for the powder. The NWS says we may get a La Nina winter which means a lot of snow for our area :lol:

dodge made a aluminum rotor spacer so you could leave caliper in place,so ya didn't have rebleed your brake system, worked for me !!! also you make set out of 1/4'' plywood,or 1/4''uhmw.

Hello, just signed up and caught this thread. Anyone know of a wheel setup for dodge 2500s? Ive got a set with my pa11. A bit heavy. Would probably be better with federal 1500s?

Welcome aboard Special Ed! there is tons of information on this site, your going to love it here! I would think you could do the same as the rest of us and fabricate a cam over system as seen in some of the posts above, if you have the 1 1/2 inch axels which is preferred for this system then no problem at all, if yo have the 1 1/4 inch, then I don't know how well they would hold up, as others have stated on here , they are a little light for the load you will impose on them, just stating what others have said, my experience is limited as I have only been flying on ski's for one season. good luck with your PA 11

Those are going to be mighty heavy ski's for that light airplane. I'd try to find a set of Aero 2000 ski's. Even the old Federal straight ski's are fairly heavy. Aeroshell also have that tunnel right below the axle hole, which you see in some of these photos, and allows you to lift them with a dolly axle there, instead of by the airplane's axles.

Wow. Thanks for the advice. Im definatly gonna love this sight. Lots of wisdom here. That said, anyone interested in a.dodge 2500s? New skins. I do beleive it is 1 1/2 axle as it has a.dodge supercub legs and 6" cleavlands. Again thanks for the responses.

While searching for ski dolly plans/drawings tonight, Aero Ski website says ski dollies are now available. No further info on their website, so you must have to call them.

I'll get a picture after work today of our over center two wheel Dolly's. Just my two cents from my very limited experience. We have tryed several ski dolly designs and styles. Our single wheel big tire ones rolled the best but take two people to put in and take out. One to lift the ski the other to slide it in and out . In this process one year the tail swung around and got all fu@$ed up when it hit the doghouse in the back of our hangar. Also these twist the hell out of the ski and gear. My favorite ones simply slide through and attach the two haves with a pin, then grab the handle and flip it over center lifting the ski. One guy can easily do it and a slight change in design would allow for bigger tires which would make it roll easier but we're only rolling out of the hangar and across a narrow driveway it hasn't been much of an issue. Praying for snow... The skis never even went on last winter ..

I finished rigging the skis and fabricated some Dolly's so thought I should post a couple of images.
Dollys in in the parked position.
In in the ready to roll position. Although I think I'll need to make a couple of snubbers to keep the tails up. Next step is to take them to the powder coater and I'm ready for winter.
The rigged skis weight 33.2 pounds each. That puts my empty weight around 994.

The top shaft on the dolly is turned to slide into the hollow axle. It has 6" or so of engagement. There isn't any keeper to hold the two together. I have a gas powered tail wheel mover and I drove it around and made some turns and it all stays together nicely.
The wheels are a heavy duty cast iron industrial wheel I found somewhere. I'd rather they were a little larger in diameter but they seem to work ok.

Ok Ed I,took some close ups of the setup.
This shows it pretty well. Since the last pictures I welded a second brace on the handle and got the Dolly's powder coated. In case anyone wonders the second cable to the rear attach point with the clip,is just a snubber to keep the ski tail off the ground when the dolly wheel is pivoted down. I also removed the brake calipers.

I bought 2 Robinson Helo dolly's from eBay for $50 last spring. I thought i'd get lucky and use them as built. Just got around making ski dolly's out of them, used wheels and handle

Glenn. Those look like a nice solution. Lightweight and I know they are pretty sturdy.
StateCop, those are decent skis for anything but crust and mashed potatoes. Surprisingly good performane in deep snow that is fluffy,too
