New Forum: A LONG time promised, but it is really coming!

Ok folks, I have said a million zillion times that I would be upgrading the forum system soon, real soon, sooner than soon. Well, I have done some test conversions and am working out the little details but plan to have this done before next weekend.

All posts will be saved, your passwords and logins will be the same, etc, etc, etc.

This will not be HUGE change for most of you. The software we are moving to, vBulliten is very similar to the phpBB we have now with a LOT of other features, including uploading and posting pictures directly in a post, better search features, tagging of posts (so the searches make sense), and much much more!

There is a LOT to consider because I have done a lot of custom development. There is likely to be a day or two of discord... Your patience is greatly appreciated.

Steve (and this is only a nit-pik) is there anyway to add a "title search" only? Like if you want to search titles only for "air cleaner" it would be possible to avoid all the threads with "air cleaner" in the body of the text. Maybe it exists now and I don't know how to do it. It's just a nit pick as I have always found most of what I wanted and actually by having to look deeper in the threads have learned a lot I would not have known. dave

    oh thats neat!

tagged items turn up in searches first if relevant,

now if everyone will take a moment to add/edit/remove the tags on each thread you read once new site is up, searching will be SOOOOOOO much more relevant!!! and pleasing....

Hey folks, the comments coming in from the BETA testers are all very good. My intent is to activate this new system that last week of October. I selected a cross section of regular posters to give it a try and make sure I was not leaving anything stupid out. I was, of course, but they set me straight right away.

I think you will like some of the new features a lot and you will have no problem with the new format.

OK PEOPLE. HOLD ON TO YOUR HATS. TAKE A DEEP BREATH.

I am going to do the switchover sometime between late afternoon and tomorrow morning. I am not anticipating much problem, but there will probably be some gnashing of teeth, etc, lost post links, etc.

YOUR PATIENCE IS GREATLY ANTICIPATED (and appreciated)

    hmmm..

adding an image in a post, is small... will not resize image usefully, see new joke thread 2... i cannot stretch that carton in proportionately it just goes to a weird tall and not long image.....

Well, I'm dumber than a box of rocks when it comes to computers. I figure that any/all of the functions that I will ever make use of will get figured out in time. My only "issue" (I refrain from saying complaint) with the new format is the "coloration" of the recent posts on the front page i.e. the white print on blue/black background is bothersome for my eyes. I did like the old format for colors.

In awe of SJ's great work.

On the Main Page, I miss seeing the total number of post per thread. DID I say that right?

I am going to do more tweaking to that home page list. I'm not really happy with it, but it will take a back seat for a while. The database is different than the old one and that is something I custom wrote, so I'll have to see if that piece of info is in that database.

    SJ,
    more info....hints....

adding image from a file on your computer has this small image displayed problem,

but adding image from a url like my picasa web shows up a reasonable size (still smaller than original)

see ho-to video thread for example in the casting resin post..

Software changes are always met with resistance. Nobody likes change. The look will be different to many and familiar to some. Functionality is similar. Photo uploads are way easier. If everyone gives it a day or three to familiarize them selves nobody will want to go back.

I for one am looking forward to the upgrade. I appreciate that Steve must have invested quite a bit of effort and resources into the switch. Thanks, Steve, for maintaining this site to the very high standard you've established.

Great news SJ. What I REALLY hope for is auto resizing of pics so I don't get carpal tunnel from scrolling to read the text.

no scrolling needed, you need to set that resolution up some....

or trade that 386DX with green phosphor CRT in for something current....

pictures have LOTS of pixels now...

Mike, I'm set (on both monitors) to 1440x900. You sayin' there's a way for ME to resize huge pix without diminishing the text size??

That would be a GoodThing. Oh, my "zoom level" is 125% so I can read this S-hit/tuff.
    Thanks already.

Oh, and the last yellow &/or green monitor was with the first XT that I paid about $2500 for in the early 80's. Windoze hadn't been invented yet, and a 1200 baud modem was a real screamer.

Yep - Works here too. I'll get used to it.
Steve could you put a link at the bottom that will take you to the home page like it used to do? Keeps me from having to scroll back to the top to go to the home page.

    NEVERMIND - I see it

I see the drop-down menu . . . it's a little more tedious scrolling to the bottom, but if that's the biggest complaint I have I say resounding success! to Grand Pooba SJ!

Is there a reason why the 1 day, 7 day, 14 day, and all option is gone in the photo gallery? That was a nice feature, especially when your gone quite a bit and come back to civilization.

Ha, everybody on the ShortWingPiper.org site got that message when we switched it over. There were some interesting emails flying to say the least.

Grant, on the lower right click the supercub.org button. Also, although I kept the home page list for those who are used to it, the whats new button at the top of the forum does that also.

Working on the Weiners right now... will take a bit. Keep the comments coming, I plan to babysit all weekend and get everything working.
