Scott/Alaskan Bushwheel Tailwheel Maintenance Videos.

Cathy and I put together these tailwheel maintenance videos this week. Tailwheels seem to be the most abused and neglected part of the airplanes I see. I take them off, disassemble, clean, inspect and reassemble at each annual inspection. I hope they are helpful.

Have you guys ever noticed how TV mechanics always have such clean hands?

Great stuff, Steve & Cathy! Thanks for sharing it here too!

Dare I mention that the one labeled "Disassembly" actually brings up the assembly video??

It is posted twice in fact. You are missing the disassembly video completely.

Great stuff!!!

I might have to go assemble my tail wheel now. 8)

Fixed, thanks for the heads up. Now get to work on your airplane.

Nice job. It'll be helpful to me. Now I know what goes on in there. All this time I thought it was FM. You know......magic. :D

Well produced, well presented, and well appreciated. Thanks for sharing.

I want to see the blooper version where the cats and dogs jump up and the table and Lee asks where babies come from...

You need to watch the 'long props' bloopers, should be in there...

the short: land on boulders, leave tail on ground. Walk landing tracks and pick up pieces

so I am told

Steve, and others on this site are the most "giving" people ever. If a person hasn't had tail wheel "challenges" yet . . . . . they will. It's the nature of the beast.
Thanks !! Larry Ciszak

Ever pull one apart and find all 5 compressions springs in pieces Steve?? I did last week on a new 30 hour ABI.... gonna send the springs to them for analysis....

Thanks for taking the time on the videos for all that haven't "been there.. done that".. to see it's not an overly daunting task!

..and BTW.. those are AN960 washers.. 970's are Pennies..

Steve, I am thankful for you posting these videos. It is time for me to disassemble and rebuild my Scott 3200 tailwheel, and this will be helpful. I ordered the Airframes AK kit and will tackle this next week. Nicely done. Thank you.

Randy

Thanks Steve, well done. If you do an extra video you may want to include your technique for replacing the bearing races in the tailwheel halves and pivot pin. We have our tricks so as to not damage things but would be good to see yours and I’m sure it would be helpful to others.

I TIG weld around the race in the wheel halfand then flip it over and pop it on the weld table while it is still hot and the race falls out. I then take a rotary file to the inside bore of the wheel so next time I can knock the race out from the back side.

The pin in the fork on earlier tailwheels doesn't have a hole in the back side to knock it out so I drill a hole in the pin and then insert an easy-out to pull it out and the drill the small hole to punch it out like Bushwheel did when they started building them.
