    ice auger on wing strut

I have heard of people carrying an ice auger on their wing strut. I have one of the light weight augers, it weighs 24lbs. Any opinions on the best way to carry it on the strut or whether you think this is a bad idea?
I was thinking of laying it horizontal just above the jury struts, with the motor facing forward. What do you guys do?

    ice auger on wing strut

I was surprised one day to come home and see the SC gone from its dolly and a rental car at the house with right and left front doors open. My corporate pilot son and another pilot left the jet to drive 80 miles to fly the SC on floats. What do you suppose they flew into the camp? A 2 X 2 X 6 bale of insulation on each strut. I imagine Alaskan moose horns would make even more drag. I wouldn't worry about the auger.

one guy had two Chrismass trees on struts, pointy end forward, said that was a big mistake, as the branches "opened up" even bigger after he took off....

    Ice Auger on wing

Hi Brian. I have carried an old Jiffy "one armed bandit" that way since the mid 70's with no issues whatever. Even put it on one time and somehow forgot to tie it down and noticed it half way up Pemadumcook Lake. Landed and tied it down: it hadn't moved at all! I carred it with the auger attached and covered with an old military duffle bag. I did put rope or bungees around the bag to minimize the flapping although there is so little air movement at that location, that I don't think that is probably an issue. Make sure it clears any flalp movement. I think you'll find it works great and frees up a lot of room elsewhere and keeps the fuel smell outside. Most recently I have been using a had auger that cuts unbelieveably fast and have pretty much done away with use of the power auger.Hope to see you before the winters over. Reid PS. I carried that particular augur with the engine forward and the gas tank turned down in front of the front strut. Good fishing to you

Does your passenger just hold onto the strutts or do you tie him for safety

Brian I put my gas auger in the baggage of my 11 with traps and all, usually need the bait up front between my feet as I'm usually out of space because of hauling extra fuel unless fishing close to home then it's in the back seat. My plane is still loader up as we tried to get to the Allagash yesterday to fish with the guys but we were in a squall area and we only got to Phillips before hitting a wall after noon time the sun came out and cleared but I would have had time to fly up then home. Jimmy R said they caught between 50-60 Touge a whitefish and a few brookies. did you pull the magyet or was that on the cub?

Hi Dan, I heard they did good fishing, I can't wait to go. I took the mag off the cub this morning. The internal gear is'nt turning when you turn the external gear. I'd like to get it fixed tomorrow if I could. I'll keep you posted.
Bill it's at Beech Hill Pond (south of Bangor,me) sometime in February. Great time, lots of planes, lots of food. Come on up.

On a Champ or similar structured a/c I wouldn't do it. Not with a powerhead this heavy. No way in hell. I've seen what happens. A SC is a different story. This guy in the bottom photos is a pro, check out how he does it. Taking the auger off I think is smart.

Would you care to clarify your statement? On both the Champ and the Super Cub the jury struts are carrying the load under tension. What have you seen happen? Is your concern structural or aerodynamic?

The auger in the top photo is heavy. Lakes can be rough. A Champ loaded for a fishing weekend with extra fuel is already over gross. At least the few I have owned were. From runway to runway I'd be less concerned. For me it's a structural concern more than the airflow. I'd say more but there are those that peruse these forums that are not here to help. Been down that road too.
