Looking for an 0-290/0-320 Acc Case

I am building up an O-290D2 and am need of an accessory case set up for use with an oil cooler(no sandwich plate on the screen). I would prefer an 0-320 accessory case so I can move the breather to the rear. Does anyone have suggestions on which junk yard or engine shop would be the best place to start looking?

    O-290- D-2 Acc Case

Rumor has it that by removing the (vacuum) pump drive unit and adding a spacer with a tapped hole in it, you'll eliminate the crankcase breather mess if you add a breather tube (with or without an oil separator).

I have an acc. case from a 0-290-D2 (same as 0-290) . The part no. stamped on it is: 61344M. The engine was apart & being inspected for overhaul. Crankcase was found to have had a spun bearing. So . .I went with another eng. that was ready to go. Also have oil sump tank, as well as the crank case, misc parts, data plate & log book. (log originates from Lock Haven off a PA-1 Larry .

This is how my engine is set up. Seems to be working fine for me.

The parts are on the way. I have a 68790 acc case and newer style oil pump coming, should be here by friday.

Jason did the metal maker finally give it up??

I take it the pump was the culprit?

The one in my airplane is still working/flying. I am going through another D2 that was built in 1986 and pickled. So far the only place that I found a tiny bit of rust is the inside of the intake tubes. Everything else is like new.

I was loaned this pickled engine to use for a while in exchange for re-rebuilding it and breaking it in. It will be sold after I put about 100hrs on it.
I'm cleaning up the ports and intake system along with a few other improvements and some balancing work. My biggest problem is that I have so much work to do on customers aircraft before JC that I'll be cutting it real close to get it finished and in my plane in the next 14 days.

My 0235 has an accessory case with no provisions for an oil cooler. I am starting to watch the normal places for a later model acc. case with oil cooler ports. I seem to recall some unique oil flow issues or lack of lubrication concerns on crank/cam gears or something on 0235's when changing the accessory case. What don't I know about doing this? Anything special? Don't ask about paperwork, I'll address that in the future. Jim

Got an 0-235 one if it will work.

My old 0290D2 had a acc case from a 0320 with the vent on it and that motor never blew a drop of oil but it was a constant high oil temp motor even though some one had plumbed dual oil coolers( stock one and one on back baffle)
When i had the engine rebuilt they put the proper acc case for a 0290 on it and this motor makes great power and runs at normall temps with the stock front cooler.
I always wondered if there was a lubrication issue with the other acc case that caused the high temps????

Don Jones on ebay was selling brand new for 0-290s for a 100 bucks from a elreno auction.

Thanks, Steve. So they left the plate out of his engine on reassembly? And he was or was not using a cooler adapter and filter kit in combo? Maybe I'll sign up and PM him.
Lycoming SI SSP-885-1 details oil filter conversions and the use of the #LW-12795 gasket, actually it is a thin steel plate, on 0235's when converting to a Lycoming oil filter adapter. Figure 8 in those instructions shows the "wishbone" device to/from an oil cooler when used on 0235 and 0290 engines with an undrilled accessory case. Lycoming specifically recommended to me to NOT use this "wishbone" device with an oil filter adapter. I could not nail the guy down with a specific reason, although I tried. I removed the "wishbone" and cooler and added an ECI filter adapter and now have oil temps 210-215 in 55 degree weather. I know that is in the green but it does not seem OK to me. That's the reason for the hunt for a drilled acc. case. I have seen the new case on ebay, they list it with a casting number as a part number and so far have not given me a part number. Back to the plate, if you go to B&C's instructions for the use of their filter adapter look at accessory cases figures #1 and #2, mine is #2 with one hole for oil in, the plate has 2 holes same as the acc. case in fig #1 with 2 holes in so I didn't use it. Called ECI about the one hole case and the lack of directions in this regard in their instructions and it was about this time they stopped taking my calls. Or maybe they stopped taking my calls after our discussion about a 20% restocking fee on a vernatherm I did not need, I've lost track. Since B&C blesses the one hole case in their instructions I installed the filter kit. Anyway back to the drilled acc. case, I think the concern I have is the correct acc case for splash oil or pressure oil to the crank gear idlers and at this point I am in over my head. I do not want to miss the hot oil hint of a potential problem now do I? The filter is clean. Oh, and I still do not understand what the LW-12795 gasket or plate does or does not do. Feel free to comment/criticize. Whew. Jim

A follow up and a real big KUDO's to Casper Labs. I made a call to them today in regard to the use of the "pork chop" adapter for an oil cooler on 0235 and 0290 engines with undrilled accessory cases and a Casper oil filter adapter and whether it was doable to combine the two. It is and no #LW12999 plate required. The gentleman I spoke with took about 15 or 20 minutes out of his day to explain to me what is and is not in Lyc SB 885-1, oil filter conversions, and why/how the "pork chop" adapter takes the place of the LW12999 plate. Basically the plate has a .140 hole in it to slow down the oil flow to the idler gear bushing by the L/H magneto, since the adapter has the .140 bleed hole in it also, no need for both! Either ECI and B&C don't understand or were not interested in helping me out. If you are looking to buy a filter adapter, based upon my experiences today, I recommend a Casper Labs. Jim

Jason, Sounds like you have it covered but I do have an 0320 accessory case. Greg
