Thread: Carb Control Cables

  1. #41
    Hi Kirk

Yes, that is correct - I have cut off the last few inches of the bracket (the end that holds a mixture cable). If you look closely at the photo you will see a tiny black dot near the end of the bracket. I intend to drill a hole there & bolt an Adel clamp to hold the mixture cable. I am using a plain wire end type of mixture cable. The Vans bracket is made for a "threaded end" type of mixture cable - I dont have the clearance required for a threaded end mixture cable, however I believe that the plain wire end type of mixture cable will work well in this application. I felt it was important to have the control cables mounted off the engine rather than off the engine mount. My build is an "Experimental" so I dont know the legal process if you have a "Certified" PA18

Thanks for the response, the idea of holding the ends of the cable sheath with the motion of the engine structurally takes the load of the control wire, as well as keeping the geometry between the cable and the carb consistant since the engine and the mounts move in different directions. Just a great solution to the problem, thanks and best of luck with your project.

So here are some updated photos of my mixture cable install. I plan on replacing the rubber adel with a AN742 plain metal clamp.Mixture Cable Top View.JPGMixture Full Lean.JPGMixture Full Rich.JPG

    Hi Clark,

Could you do me a favor and measure the distance between your firewall and the aft most bolt that holds your carb to the oil sump? I wrestled mightily with how to do these connections on my plane (not a Cub) and it looks like you may have engineered the solution. I tried the Vans brackett but didn't have your great ideas. I ended up with a solution that works but my cables come off the engine mount and we all know that isn't the greatest solution. If your distance from firewall to carb is the same or less than mine, I can incorporate your system and have a better solution. My engine is an O-235 L2C. Thanks for the help.
    Thanks, Don...

Hello Bushcaddy - It is 12 inches from my firewall to my aft carb/sump bolt (a couple of photos attached). I have a solid wire to my mixture (I find this application a little on the stiff side - but I do hit both stops no problem on the mixture lever arm - I am also use to a multi wire smooth cable on the RV I'm flying). If you could post a couple of photos on here of what you have done on your plane it can help others.12 inches to aft carb bolts.JPG6 inches to adel clamp.JPGTop View.JPG

Clark, thanks for the pics...the next time my cowl is off I'll get some pics and post them of my current set-up. Looking at your pics again I'm not sure your set-up will work with my carb. The throttle portion would work but my mixture arm has different geometry than yours. My carb is a Marvel Schebler MA3 PA. At any rate I'll check it out and get the pics. thanks again.
    Thanks, Don...

You are welcome Bushcaddy. I had to modify the Van's Bracket for my mixture - I have altered the mixture again (see photos), as I didn't like the big tight curve I had in the mixture cable. Now it isn't as stiff. All I did was make a bracket and bolted it to the Van's bracket. Not the nut and rubber clamp will be replaced with a metal stop nut & a metal adel clamp for the final product.Mixture Change 1.JPGMixture Change 2.JPG

what is the thickness of the bracket? are there any drawings of one?

    Hi grdev

The Van's Bracket is 0.060" thick

Regarding drawings - The bracket is fabricated by Vans (the kit manufacturers of the RV kitplane), you could contact them for a drawing. Last time I checked, the brackets were inexpensive (check out the links on previous posts here). Note 2 gaskets (one on top of the bracket & one on the bottom of the bracket) are installed as the bracket is "sandwiched" between the carb & oil pan. Hope this helps
