    How to strip paint

    Fellow pilots

Would like some advice on paint removal on the boot cowl of my experimental. The guy that painted it did not prime it and you know what is now happening.
Won't say who but you all know him.
I have removed the paint off the cowling but would like to leave the boot cowl on to remove and paint.
Any advice on the process without affecting the fabric

    Thanks

Mask-off the fabric with Aluminum foil!

Disclaimer: Get a second or third opinion. Never tried it. But, It seems like it would work.

I've had good success with Soy-Gel. It's a goopy paste that you paint on, cover with Saran Wrap, allow to work for several hours, then scrape off with a plastic scraper and/or Scotch-Brite pad. It's water soluble, so the clean up is easy.

My son did the control surfaces of an Arrow using Soy Gel.

if you use stripper, wash around the rivets, again and again...

Know of planes that had the stripper under rivets, then the paint went on
I don't know where you've been me lad, but I see you won first Prize!

Not sure how this mad it in the news section but....

It looks like I may be repainting a Cherokee 140...the owner doesnt what to spend a ton of money. what are the preffered methods of paine removal.....

I have experience in plastic media blast and also using the gel type products but not this soy gel for paint removal......if the plane where not solid I'd use hot Nitric acid or methylene chloride.

the paint is heavily oxidized is there a scuff an shoot method for planes? has anyone rented a soda blaster or had a mobile guy come to do it?

any type of medium blasting will warp the crap out of the thin alum. if your not super careful.

I use this http://www.sea2sky.co.nz/viewproduct.aspx?ID=386 and buy it here http://www.aerocolorspaints.com/ in FL. I have not found a coating it will not lift.

I have put masking tape on the fabric first then use the foil tape that is used for duct work. Do not use the fiber reinforced metal tape. Aluminum foil works great for masking but it tears easily so be careful when working around it.

Check out Roger Peterson's post about painting, he power washed the paint off of his J3 fabric. He posted pictures of the results.

Will the air hose remove the silver as well, or just lift the paint?

everything, depending on how good it was stuck.... some will not peel like this...

personally I hate doing this, end up with a half assed paint job, when you could have just ripped fabric off and slapped new on(no extra work done)

Make sure you prime it with EkoBond before you repaint it. Anything will stick to that stuff and it will also stick to anything that is now on the plane.

I have completly rebuilt 7 aircraft and stripped and painted all of them. The best paint stripper that I have found is No Swett semi-paste paint stripper by NuTec Industrial Chemicals, Geneseo, Ill. Works best at about 75-80 degrees, brush on heavy, cover with black plastic sheet for a while. I rent a steam genny but just use it for hi pressure hot water, NOT STEAM. to blast the paint off. Takes about a day to do a Cessna 172 or a Cherokee 140 with 2 people working. Its water soluble, so you can put your hands in it, and no worries about corosion. Never used it on fabric.
