    29 vs 8:50's

What's the difference in diameter between the 29's and the 8:50x6:00 tires: If you buy a used set, can you get an STC from the manufactures of the tires, or do you have to do a 337? Thanks

    Hey there Supercub,

My ABW 29s are 29" tall and 11.25" wide at 10 psi with a 1400 lb airplane sitting on them. My 8.50s are sitting on a shelf with no air, so I won't measure them. The 29s are considerably bigger though.

Hopefully someone with mounted 8.50's will chime in.

8:50's are a bit smaller diameter than goodyear 26".

Bushwheel guys are GREAT to deal with switching planes on the STC.

NO comparison between 29" and 8:50s. Not even close.
I don't know where you've been me lad, but I see you won first Prize!

The biggest difference is the safety factor. You wont regret it. If you dont get 'em let me know who has the used set of 29's...

If I remember correctly the 8:50's are 20 1/2 inches high.

Yes, that's what mine are. Don't know the width though.

My Goodyear 8.50s (6 ply) at 30 psi are 21.75 inches. They are brutal (harsh ride) at that pressure but at 15 psi they soften considerably in character and I have not experienced any slippage on the wheel
I will measure height and width at that lower pressure for you tomorrow.
I would go the AirTrac route if I were to do it over and go 4 ply. That tire would be less expensive and offer a more rounded profile plus be more forgiving in carcass ridgitity.
My off-airport operations is not too severe but I appreciate the prop clearance. The GYs were 15.5 pounds each and $500.00 for the pair.
I did notice additional plate drag airborne which would be expected having 8.00x6s mounted before the tire change.
    Hope this helps.
