    New CubCrafters CC11-100 Sport Cub

Well, I finally got my Sport Cub. The fit and finish is first class and the takeoff and landing capabilities suprised me. I've owned a Husky and a Supercub, presently own a J3/L-4 and this CC11 takes off quicker and lands shorter than all of them. This is with just me on board and full fuel. I know the Supercub and the Husky will carry a much bigger load and go faster, but for my wife and I, and a couple of bags, this little airplane sure fits our program. 5.5 GPH, 100 MPH and no medical necessary. Congratulations! My friend here is getting his in June. He wants me to go to the factory with him to pick it up, but I'm not sure I'm ready to fly that far

What kind of empty weight did you end up with? Do you have flaps? He is getting flaps and I'm concerned that we will be over gross with the 2 of us fairly big guys. I know performance won't be an issue, I 'm sure it will fly all day at 1500 lbs or more, but I don't need to lose my CFI getting ramped. It will be obvious to anybody when we get out that we are over 1320. I'm assuming the empty weight is above 850 lbs.

Rich, I've got flaps, 850 tires, 3200 tailwheel, two tanks, the flat panel, 406 mhz elt, strobes and 71x41 metal prop. It weighs 889.5 lbs. I know this is an old comparison, but any one of the thousands of Cessna 150's with you, your instructor and full fuel was over gross every time it took off. You just work around it. My wife and I are on a diet. Bill

Bill, what sort of ground roll are you getting? And what prop are you using? I fly a '46 J-3 with an O-200 and a 7142 prop. I weigh 214, the plane weighs 789. On a 98 degree day, no wind. I get off in about 190 feet with stock gear and tires. On an 80 degree day, about 25 - 30 feet less. Rick's about 50 pounds lighter than me and gets off about 30 feet shorter. Am working up a 337 for extended gear.
    All the best,
    JimC

Interesting number, since it's exactly .5 lb below the maximum empty weight that the aircraft could have for certification as an SLSA! It would be interesting to weigh the aircraft and see if they really did cut it that close or of that's just a "paperwork" number.

What am I talking about, you ask? The consensus standard for SLSA certification requires that an aircraft have a useful load equal to 190 lbs per seat plus a number equal to half the maximum engine horsepower. For a two seat aircraft with a 100 HP engine the useful load must be at least 430 lbs, and with a 1320 lb gross weight that puts the empty weight at 890 lbs. Interesting that this particular Sport Cub comes out to JUST below that number. I'm not saying that it doesn't actually weight that much. I just find it interesting that it would come out that close.

Thanks for the information. Yes, I've been in plenty of 150 "heavies"

Joe, If the SLSA is on floats, is it the same except that 1430 is used as the GW? Also, if an SLSA is certified on floats, does that mean that the structual load testing was done at 1430 rather than 1320?

    Rich,

Yes, the formula for empty weight and useful load would be the same for a float plane, but the gross weight would be 1430 lbs when on floats (but would revert to 1320 lbs if the floats are removed and land gear was installed). The aircraft would have to be tested with the floats installed and at the 1430 lb gross weight.

Jimc, I have a 71x41 prop. Don't know the exact footage on the ground roll, it just gets off before the tree I've used all these years as a marker for the Husky and Supercub on my airstrip. On final, full flaps with the VG's she is firm and stable at 38 mph electronic readout confirmed by the steam gage. My J3 is pretty sloppy at that speed Bill

Joe, you are welcome to come on down and weigh it. Bill

Bill, many thanks for the info. If it's getting off quicker than a Husky or SuperCub, that's plenty good enough.

Have flown 65hp, 75hp, 85hp, 100hp J-3's PA-11's with 85hp and 100hp and Super Cubs........the shortest takeoff was the 75hp J-3 cub......it was very light too. It was also the shortest landing. For fun we use to have short field take off and landings using these different airplanes.........granted, between the lot, there wasn't much difference, if memory serves me correctly I think about 20 feet difference between the shortest and longest.

Last year at The CC open house I was lucky enough to fly the sport cub. I loved it! what a neat plane. My first cub was a 47 Pa-11 with a 90 hp. I have always been sorry I sold her. I think the sport cub is going to be a huge success. I will bet that in 20 years the price you paid for it will be considered the deal of the decade and I bet they will still be flying for the next 75 years.

I've flown a '46 J-3 with 65, 85, & 100 hp. On that plane, takeoff was by far the shortest with 100 hp.

150 hp J-3 with no electrics and clipped wings built real light. The throttle went forward as the stick went back and she climbed out at an unbelievable deck angle.

ah, but would you rather have the sport cub or a similarly price pa18? which was more fun? assuming you dont need LSA.

I appreciate the offer. It would really be interesting to see what it actually weighs. Cub Crafters are pretty sharp folks, so I wouldn't be surprised if it did actually weight 889.5. It just seems incredible that they could cut it that close to the limit. (Many other SLSA manufacturers are not finding it easy to stay within the limits on this.)

But no matter what the actual to-the-pound weight is, I'm sure it's a heck of a machine that will be a ton of fun to fly! IAnd 'm sure you'll enjoy the heck out of it!!

So what was the total cost of the CC Sport Cub after goodies and tax's you got, if you do not my me asking.

  18. #18
Joe, you are right, it's a ball to fly! Cpt. Bly, if you go to the CC web site and click on "buy an airplane", the base price and the options prices are there, thats what they get for them. Steve, I'll bet that 150 J3 is a rocket ship beyond all others in the Cub line. Bill

It is a hoot. To bad we can't all have a hanger full of all the different Cubs to play with.

Steve, did you do that 150 J-3 with a Lycoming, or a hopped up O-200?

  21. #21
It is a Lycoming with no electric. It is rel light. Has boost tabs on the ailerons and has a real nice roll rate. Van White in Lubbock, TX built it many years ago and finally got it back. He is an old Bucker aerobatic pilot.

If you are interested, there is a full story on the testing of this aircraft on the Cub Crafters site. They tested it the same way they did the fully certified Top Cub. The video clips of the spin testing at gross with different CGs are interesting.....
