    337's & STC's

In the quest for knowledge, J-3 in nature, I have been perusing the web seeking brain cells lost.

Today I came across a site that proclaimed in big bold letters

"NEW An authorized signed copy of the original STC must be attached to the FAA copy of the form 337 that is sent to your local FAA office for filing in Oklahoma City, Ok. aircraft records section. Just a STC number in the remarks section, of the form 337 is not sufficient."

Yeah, I cut and pasted it directly from the web site.

I read it twice, of course being to lazy to look further I called a friend. he said it was news to him but thought it was a good idea. He did not remember it being discussed during refresher. Did we miss something, is this really new, did I read out of context, or am I just dreaming again.

    Check your mail.

It is 2/3rds way down the page under generating the FAA form 337.

I have one of those "THIS PLANE ONLY no transfers" I called to see about replacing the flight manual supplement. He wanted $2400.00 for the flight manual supplement. Can't fly without it. Glad I found the original.

OK. I talked to my favorite FAA man today. He has never heard of this either. He said it was always nice to see the copy, but then it went in the trash.

He also said that soon they would no longer review the 337 forms. they will be forwarded to OKC. So if it is not legal, you won't find out till after there is a problem.

This seems consistent with the proposed new rule seen here.

I don't know the current status of the rule but the proposed version addresses the same thing in the same way.

Until the STC holder provides me with 2 signed, sealed originals........my customers' aircraft records will contain the original, signed, sealed STC.

Then theoretically you'd be getting paid to render your customer's plane unairworthy.

Clearly the STC holders will need to provide an appropriate document, which will be simple. Or maybe not, since the original copy will mean nothing to anybody except the feds.

What's the status of the rule?

If there is only one copy, and you send it to the feds, how is the next IA supposed to know that you bought and paid for the STC? Just seeing the 337 doesn't mean that it was accepted by the feds.

On the other hand, there has to be a date, prior to which a 337 by itself will suffice. Correct?

Sounds like I've been called out with this statement: "Then theoretically you'd be getting paid to render your customer's plane unairworthy."

As one who submits multiple form 337's for STC'ed mods to the feds each year, often multiple 337's per month or even per week, I have yet been requested to provide the STC to the feds, neither the signed and sealed original, nor a copy.

Proposed rules mean nothing to me until local FSDO office policy requires me to act in accordance with them.

I was told friday that after 1996 you need the cover letter granting use of the STC to be legal.

I am still trying to do this LOVELY pre-buy. The buyer really wants this plane. I said RUN away. His money. I got the faa disk, ordered papers from Clyde, and am now calling looking for "papers".

it goes something like this: "hello, I need paperwork for an stc done in 1995. CLICK, hummmmmmmm. Hello? Hello?

When they put the ribs in they removed the tags, not to paint, they are still bare. Lists the STC in the log entry and 337, but no stc papers. what a pain. The company whose stc is listed IS at least trying to help. I am most Impressed.

I just sent one of my ships off for a pre-buy. They found 5 items. I am VERY embarrassed. two SB's not listed as NA, two complied with that they can't find the entry for ( I know I wrote it. ha ha) and one torn grease boot.
Am I expecting to much from a cub?
