Ah-hah! That is proof of the false-ness of those people who claim to have spectacular luck and timing in catching a jet in the vapor cone "just as it breaks the sound barrier". That vapor cone is popping in and out through the whole fly-by.

My brother served on the Big-E for 4 years, and at the end of the tour we got to go aboard for a "Family-Day" cruise. They put on quite a show: bomb runs, supersonic fly-bys, touch&gos, and even some full-stop landings and launches with the F-14s and Awacs planes. There is nothing like standing at the end of the deck and having a F14 catapault launch 40' away!
