    Borer Pitch for High Altitude

I am preparing to pull my 82X41 prop, and send it for overhaul during my airframe rebuild. (Arizona sand-bar flying is hard on the finish!) The performance here at altitude is poor, as should be expected. Should I consider pitching it courser for my 150 horse. I have to go to 10,000' to clear the range between Sierra Blanca and Timberon. After Jr. moves to Alaska my problem may be solved. What do you think?

P.S. My field elevation is 6,811', and the DA's are usually over 10,000' on warm days.

    Maybe 82x44...or 45
It should still work ok at lower altitudes, but you wont have total run-up down low on a thick air day.
Your mountain flying will be a lot snappier climb wise..

    Thanks, I'll try it!

Hey Ron; If I remember correctly Cubsunlimited had a LEES and a 160 with a 43 pitch borer. John W was afraid this was Too much Pitch but ended up delighted with the combo. Hey did you get my PM John

Repitched my 41" for 44" here at 4220 ft MSL, and it works much better.
150 HP, and I noticed no change in climb at 4200', but an increase in cruise of about 3-5 mph......

Sounds like I definately need more grab. Thinking I may go to about 43"?

John, I did not get your PM. Try emailing me at supercub@zianet.com.

    Borer Prop's

Hello I just bought a bore prop for my PA-18-135 at Dan's in Anchorage. He ordered me a 82/41 . After reading the paper work it seems that the pitch gets coarser the more the H.P. goes up. It said 82/42-43 for 150/160 H.P. and I think 82/44 for the 180 Horse. I am away from the paper work right now so this is not set in stone??
I know the 82/41 on my 135 really seemed to give it some get up and go!!

    Hooter,
This is the explanation I received from the owner of a major prop shop: You install the model prop that is TC'd/STC''d for your aircraft, and then you may legally adjust the pitch, as necessary, for the desired performance, provided it is still within the TC parameters.

I use a 8244 and start out at 3600 msl and go up from there. Seems to work good on a 160 hp. Tried a couple different 41s and they made alot of noise but didnt do much.

Kase - did you notice much of a cruise performance difference between the 41 and the 44?

About 8-10 mph on my plane.

I just had my 41 repitched to 44, on a pa18-150. Quicker off the water at seal level, and much better climb rate. The 41 would let the engine spin up to 2700 on takeoff and climb out, but seemed to be just spinning and not really grabbing well.

Cruise speed increased by about 6 knots.

I have not tried the 44 at altitude yet, but from all indictions so far, it should work well.

After my engine replacement last year, I pitched my Borer to 44, primarly to give a greater load (read Manifold Pressure) on the cylinders for breakin. It gave me about 5mph in cruise improvement. After flying for over 150hrs, I am not going back to a 42. I can come and go to everywhere short I want, and I like the 5mph. With the custom rebuilding, including Superior Camshaft, and K&N filter I still get 2500 rpm on takeoff run at sea level altitudes.
