Congrats to Craig and Darren, earned their Float-Cub wings

Started one guy on Monday and the other was a part time student from last summer.

Both passed, one after the other on Thursday up by Soldotna, on Mackey Lake.

So now there are two more Float-Cub pilots out there.

The one guy from Texas is now looking for a Cub and his wife looked at houses up around Kenai and Slodotna on Thursday night.

The guy who lives down the road is trying to sell his C-210 so he can fly a taildragger with float options..

Welcome them aboard for me, Alex. And tell them to look me up in Hammond sometime and we'll fly down to Coonie country for some real food. Keep 'em coming!

    Alex,

I remember when I got my float rating. I saw a Lt. Col. (USAF pilot) that I worked for and I told him I had just received my float rating. I was really proud. Rightfully so, as anyone else that gets a new rating. He looked at me and said, "Don, that is real nice. Now you have a license to learn how to fly a floatplane. It takes experience." He had a C-180 on floats. His words still stick in my mind. WE are ALL always learning. If you are not, you better look at yourself in the mirror. Tell those guys congrats. They are in for some fun now.

Thanks Alex for making the week educational and enjoyable. I didn't think that I'd actually pass the "ride" after only a few hours of seaplane time, but your Cub just knows it's way around the lakes regardless of who's flying her.

Of course after having the time of my life and seeing the most awesome terrain I wasn't worried about passing the checkride since I'd already had several "Alaska moments". Passing the checkride was just the icing on the cake.

Torch: I definately am still green in any airplane and still learning, and hope to keep that attitude until I'm an "old pilot". My next plan as far as seaplanes will be to visit a local school with a 172 or something with a few more horses and get a few hours in one of those planes.

    It was a pleasure Craig.

Your check-ride will be the one to beat.
For some reason the Dragon-Lady really liked having you at her controls.

I hope you get a chance to come back up here to the Far West....

Lament of the New Floatplane Pilot . . . .

As my wife had predicted, I'm already in a deep depression after the second day back from the trip of a lifetime. I look intently at the N. Texas horizon, missing the snow dressed peaks that surround Kachemak Bay. How will flying ever be interesting again, I ask?

Where is the volcanic peak that lay 100 miles distant? On a good day here I can't see Forth Worth only 40 miles away. Where are the thousands of lakes inviting the EDO's for a swim, testing my new skills with a myriad of winds and approaches.

Maybe if I came back soon I could start a leech eradication service and make millions.

Only a couple of lakes around here have em. Most of the lakes we where landing on, Hazel, Leisure, Emerald, Caribou and even Mackey are clean as a whistle.

If I can ever get my guest cabin finished you can hang out there while looking for a place.

    Hey Craig,

Keep an eye on this website http://www.cedarmills.com .
In October they put on a great seaplane splashin/seminar. Or better yet just putt up there now (Probably about 80 miles from you) and check out the Moose that Rich is building on floats. His hangar is on the turf strip that is part of the resort.

I heard a rumor that Rich was building a Moose. My Dad lived in his sailboat up there for about a year and got to know him pretty well, but I guess he hadn't started that plane yet. I'll have to see about making a trip up there. It's a great excuse to take the club's 140 up there and get some "grass time" in.
