Flew a Smith Cub today.

Hi all, Today I got to help fly off some time on a Smith Cub .The plane is a dream to fly. here are a few details.
1. 1206 lbs empty full electric
2.100-105 mph with 74-56 prop. stall with flaps 35-40 mph
3. 160 hp lycoming
4. L-21 version with 4 inch wider fuselage. doors on each side.
5.3 inch taller gear
6.airtech covering method
7.No problems at all for the builder
when the FAA man came to license the plane
last Wed. Dallas office. 51% rule evidently applies .

This L21 replica was built by Max, a local enthusiast that restored a J-3 Cub and an L-4 last year. The L21 replica was painted with the same paint scheme as his 1944 L-4.

This looks to be a really, really nice plane. Nice to know it passes the 51% rule muster by "our friends", the FAA.

Hey Jim, thanks for the pictures .I know your to help fly off some hours on Max's Cub too.I got in 1.6 yesterday.I offered to pay the fuel bill but Max wouldn't hear of it! He's thinking we will all get the 25 hrs. by Mon. or Tues. Lets get it on YeeeHaaa! . Also,everyone I said the stall was about 40 mph but with 2 notches of flaps and a little power it reads zero LOL. One other thing Max started this Cub in Feb. or March and it went together really good.

Congrats - Great looking Cub

Just curious - how did you rig the front seat throttle in her? Panel mount I'm guessing. What's that like to use with the stick - seems like it might be kind of awkward.

Mike,
Would the building be willing to post or email me a copy of the approved 51% paperwork, (FAA form 8000-38 )? If I can get copies of a couple of approved 51% forms it will go a long way in convincing the FAA up here to signed mine off.

Im surprised its that heavy.

Hi,Gunny&Kelvin. In regards to the throttle location Max built a
console box and mounted it on the sidewall at stock location.
I will also check on the FAA form for you Kelvin.

As far as empty weight 1206 lbs. seems heavy to me also, but
that seems to be the going weight with some others even weighing
more than that.........My J-5 weighs 750 empty with a 0-200 no electric.


I'm gonna cover that T-Craft someday I've only
had the thing for 12 yrs!
