Which one seems to work best? I have my eye on EI's. Any feedback would help.

Try a search there are lots of opinions in another thread. Or just buy the Horizion Instruments unit. It is for a big hole. More than just a tach.

I put in the JPI Slimline tach. it does NOT replace the primary mechanical tach, which I prefered. the mechanical tach is fine for counting up engine hours.
for real RPM info, I use the JPI. it's a great little puppy and is only $300. it's a snap to install. I did it all myself during OH and had the IA inspect and sign.
it has green/yellow/red lights you can have programmed to your specific ranges.
it's just plain digital with RYG lights. those imitation round things look real klunky to me.

My EI is a primary replacement, has pretty lights to show you the analog, and works like a champ. Flight time, engine time, and engine time since take off. Also, lets you zero out for an easy mag drop check. But mostly, I like the fact that it fits in a 2.5" hole.

Steve,
Does the intensity of the LEDs bother you at night? They seemed bright in the installation I saw. Is there an intensity control available to the pilot?

My Dad has the EI in his Clipper. I didn't like it till I flew it to S&F last year and got used to it. Haven't flown it at night.

If my memory serves me right, from a Rebel I have in the hanger with EI stuff in it (engine scanner/tach etc), there are two lighting wires with one being hooked into the dimmer circuit for those that venture out into the dark.Originally Posted by Steve Pierce
I was going to do that at one time (get a night rating), but my big brother said to me "what do you do when your single engine dies at night...turn on the landing light and if you don't like what you see turn it back off"! Smart ass statement from a 20yr x 15,000+ hr Herc driver (and now 330 airbus), but I never did go get that night rating!

My hands down favorite is the Horizon unit. Works good, easy to see, and lots of features.
