Hi Tim,
there are regional climate centers in the US (http://www.wrcc.dri.edu/rcc.html). What location are you interested? In case of a location in Alaska you can send me a PM.

Linda from Alaska Wing Covers is great, and usually does a great job. However in case you need wing covers, order them now and don't wait to winter. As with all small companies which produce a great...
I wonder if anybody here has already experience with the new Becker AR 6201 radio?

It was a CAP beaver and the CAP pilots were fined by the CAP? Or it was a private beaver than the CAP fined the for needing to get found?[/quote]
In case a CAP pilot acts negligent and...
In case I update the Alaska fires (together with smoke forecasts) every day at http://smoke.arsc.edu/current_fires.html

There is obviously a very negative opinion about CAP here. I don't know any details about this recent Beaver accident. The PIC's of the accident plane were most likely negligent and not competent...
Is there still enough snow on the runway? In case I wonder if it is possible to taxi to the fuel pumps on straight skis?
Any information is appreciated!
Thanks, Martin
For the Alaska pilots: we have a similar 'pop-up' weather information page at http://climate.gi.alaska.edu/Wx/current.html

J5Mike,
I agree with Mike, June is a good month for Alaska. July, August is typically more rainy and especially in Interior Alaska there is often smoke. My favorite months are May, June, and also...

Two problems with them: They are not currently STCd on the Cub, but...
I got a Sport Cat as back up, and realized quite some condensation the 2 times I used it so far. Therefore I contemplate to buy a Honda generator for the Tanis, and deal with the additional weight....
Hey Steve,
maybe you suggest a 'biggest loser' within this forum... I am in!

Cub_Driver,
the best up to date online information on fires is available from the Alaska Interagency Coordination Center at http://fire.ak.blm.gov/

There are more than 80 active wildfires in Alaska now. We developed a model for smoke forecasting here at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. In case you want to check for smoke in your Alaska flight...
The SPOT is a nice relatively cheap device, but I absolutely have to second George's concerns for Alaska pilots. The Globalstar satellite data link up in the North is intermittent , data transfer...
Hi Christina,
the SPOT works in the Brooks Range, but depending on the time of the day and position (lat/lon/elevation) intermittent. Signal delays of about 40 minutes are typical.
For reference we have now a sophisticated wildfire smoke forecast system running at the University of Alaska Supercomputing Center, which will show where the smoke from current wildfires moves (smoke...
Stewart,
you are absolutely right, -it depends on the application. As I stated, the announced 10 minute tracking update was intermittent. In the case of an emergency during hunting or...
Despite Stewart's negative experience with the SPOT I gave it a try up here around Fairbanks.
In order to track expensive instruments mounted on a weather balloon we attached a SPOT to the balloon...
Stewart, many thanks for your infos!!
The reason I asked, my 180 hP PA12 has extended wings and the Dodge 30.5 gal fuel tanks. I definitely like both.
Your plane looks very nice. Would be nice to...
Steward, -why no Atlee Dodge fuel tanks with extended wings?
I like your door; is there a STC for that? Who did the door, and where are you in AK?
Thanks, Martin
Hi,
satellite coverage for the SPOT locator seems marginal in Alaska (esp. N-NW). Does anybody in Alaska has experience with it?
