Looks pretty heavy, thick wall? I like the thought process though.

I was on a crane job the other day, setting a big round dome thing on a Pakistani restaurant roof (a minaret?), and I noticed it only weighed 400 lbs. It was spherical and about 8' dia. I asked how it was made, turns out there is a business in town that has a computer controlled set up for cutting foam. You want custom moldings or any object for the outside of a building, to stucco over? No problem, if you can enter the shape he can cut it out, and pretty cheap too.

This may be a real labor saving way to make complex composite parts, like a belly pod for my Rans S-7S. Have this foam guy squirt me out the optimum shape (pretty complex, the belly has a few different angles and shape changes) and then I could run it over to a buddies hangar who is a composites whiz (he's worked for BackCountryCubs, he's GOOD) and have him lay up some carbon fiber on it. Isn't making the molds the most work? This may be a good short cut.

Not bad? I scribed a line at 2" down. See what it looks like tomorrow after i cut it down. What does a store bought fiberglass pod weigh?

20-26 lbs. I think the new ones are 26lbs.

This will give you some idea on length.

What location would a guy want to put tabs on for the rear strap for a pod if I where to do before covering the fuselage.

My aluminum one weighs 16 lbs. I used front gear fitting and float fuselage fitting for attach points. Have used it for 10 or more years with no problems.

Since he was late for April 1 I know Glenn is serious. Very serious. I think you have the makings of a very sweet pod there Glenn. Sweet.

I think it's going to work. 34 lbs

Glenn,

Does Tim really want a ride that bad that he will climb into that door?

Super cool and inventive idea. Saves lots of effort building new, and is probably very good for airflow!

Paint it to look more like a bomb and add some fins. No, don't do that. It already looks enough like a bomb to generate lots of phone calls when you fly over. jrh

It should make a good plug to build a mold for a carbon fiber version. Maybe sell a few. Cool idea, MacGyver!

I don't think you want to use the ones listed on Craigslist. They are designed for CNG and therefore are built to be very strong which makes them too heavy. These listed are 120 pounds. The ones used in water softener systems should work and be lighter. I like the suggestion of using one for a carbon fiber pattern!
