Must-see stops between DC-CIN-STL-KC-DEN?

I'm heading to DC tomorrow to bring my PA-12 home to Wyoming. Flight route will be:

DC-CIN-STL-KC-DEN-WYO

Planning to depart DC Saturday and be back in Wyoming by Wednesday or Thursday. Are there any must-see destinations, attractions, or airports that I would regret flying past? I don't have a lot of extra time, but also don't know when I'll get to make a trip like this again.

Would love to meet the Ohio Bush Plane guys, stop and meet SJ in KC, etc., but will probably be limited mostly to short diversions and stopping at airports that have good air museums, etc.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts and recommendations.

PS I'm also soliciting advice on how to force myself back into the office when I get home.

Wright Patterson museum in Dayton Oh is an awesome stop. I am not home or I would be happy to have you over . Rick

I have him roped into stopping at Graham Field for Saturday night. Maybe we can get him to Carrroll County (TSO) for Sunday breakfast if anyone wants to hook up for a meet and greet?

Is there a meet and greet spot closer to, or to the SW of OH82? I'd love to do TSO for breakfast, but I'll have to fit in 6 hours of flying time to STL, plus a fuel stop.

Stop in to Grimes Field (I74) Urbana, Ohio before 2 P.M. on Saturday and I will take you through the http://www.champaignaviationmuseum.org/HOME.php and let you use my van on Sunday morning to visit the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force that opens at 9 A.M. We are about 1 hour from the Museum. I hope you can make it to AIrVenture this year with your new Cub. I might be able to get you into a hanger for Saturday night.

Or fly to Grimes for breakfast on Sunday!

Let me know how I can help,

What a great offer, Rick! I really appreciate it. I probably won't be able to get out of DC early enough on Saturday to get to OH until late afternoon. I'm planning to stay with Patrol Guy at OH82, and then breakfast on Sunday and scoot off to try and make STL by mid-afternoon.

I'm dreaming about OSH, and will get in touch with you when my travels take me out that way again.

Thanks again for the offer.

Darin - Rick has it. I was going to say Urbana is on your way. I'll see if we can scare up some pilots to head that way. John

Perfect. This little detour is going to beat the heck out of sleeping in the pilot's lounge at some random airport south of Cincinnati!

Maryland Airport (2W5), 20nm south of DCA.

My current flight plan is:

2W5 7VG0 OH82 I74 1H8 M71 0N0 KMCK KFNL KLAR FARSON

If I have enough fun with the Ohio boys, I may just terminate my flight plan there.:Gchimp:

Unless St Louis is a mandatory stop you should check out or overnight at Gaston's instead http://www.gastons.com/airstrip.php

Great tip, Clay. I've always wanted to see Gaston's, but will have to do it on another trip. My sister and her kids live in STL, and my dad is flying to STL to meet me there and finish the rest of the trip with me. He's an airplane bum too, but he never took the leap and got his ticket. We've only ever spent an hour or two flying together, so it should be a great chance to spend a couple of days in the air with him. Dream come true for both of us.

I wasn't lacking for excuses to plan additional trips, and now I can add Gaston's to the list as well!

If you find stopping in the STL convenient I would recommend 1HO, Creve Couer, Dauster Field.
The airport is a mecca of one-of-a-kind airplanes and much other eye candy. They also have a museum to visit on field but simply walking and eyeballing hangars (if open) is excellent.
A great grouping of TRG (Tube, Rag and Grass) airmachines there.
Have a safe, enjoyable trip.

Dave

OK - we turned Ranch Pilot loose finally. He is on the way. We gave him the Ohio Bush Planes escort to Urbana, OH.

I want to extend a huge thanks to Patrol Guy for taking such good care of me in Ohio. I showed up unannounced at sunset on the night of the Superbowl, but we had such a great time drinking beer and swapping stories that we didn't pay any attention to the game! He couldn't have been a better host.

I look forward to the chance to return the favor to John, or any of the rest of you, if you are ever passing through southwestern Wyoming.:Beer
