With Torch's inspiration I was hoping to start a picture thread of your favorite winter ski pics from around the country and the world.
With the late November rains here the probability of an early solid freeze up is just not going to happen.

Those are great shots. I'm amazed at how pretty Alaska truly is.
How do you know how deep the snow is when landing? How do you prevent from hitting soft snow? Are there certain things to look for before landing? I'm from the desert in CA and don't see conditions like this.

A friend who lived in Alaska for a while told me that the winters will drive you crazy unless you "embrace" it for it's own beauty. These pictures explain what he was saying perfectly. You guys make this look more inviting than most any beach pictures in the summer ......... unless there are Cubs on floats maybe. That white stuff sure looks fun, thanks for sharing.

My wife and I made it, I drew up the plans and she sewed it up. There is no floor, I might make one removable for Sumer camping. I need to put some windows in to see the tipups. It keeps the wind off you and with a heater it's a nice way to spend a day with my son catching a few fish.

At Driggs, Idaho the other day., alongside the asphalt strip. The berm was too abrupt to taxi onto the hard surface, so I took off and landed again after figuring out where the FBO was. I tried to touch base with the person based there with the Carbon Cub, but couldn't. Later I figured out I had the right phone #, but stupidly did not dial the Wyoming area code, so I couldn't reach him. They have LOTS of snow thereabouts, and I had a great time on the flight back south to Inkom. Snow on average everywhere I was landing was 3 to 4' deep at least, way too deep for even Bushwheels of course. Gotta have skis in this country to land off airport, period! At one landing site in a remote area, some snowmobilers rode up right as I was getting ready to restart. Before they could say anything I asked them if they were all right, and if they needed me to call Search and Rescue....they just looked at me and said "that's what we were going to ask you"! We all had a good laugh and went about our "business", people around here are NOT used to seeing skiplanes, and I hope like hell some well meaning citizen doesn't call Life Flight etc. thinking I've had a problem.http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu213/simkot/DSC_0572-1.jpg

PS: I put my skis on the cub today.
I was bidding on these ebay skis, but they were taken off early. Here is their excuse:
Thanks for bidding on the listing:
190489030668 - 1946 Federal Aircraft Skis A-1850
Unfortunately, we had to remove this listing and cancel all bids. We don't like to remove listings -- it's disappointing for everyone -- but sometimes we need to do it.
There are three main reasons why we remove listings:
-- The listing doesn't follow eBay guidelines.
-- The item isn't allowed on eBay or can only be listed under certain conditions.
-- The listing contains pictures or words that may create copyright or trademark issues.
If the seller is able to fix the problem and relist the item, we hope you'll bid on it again.
Sometimes, instead of relisting an item, a seller will suggest that you buy it directly from him or her, off eBay. If that happens, please don't accept. If anything goes wrong with the purchase, we won't be able to help you.
-- If you have questions --
Due to concerns about member privacy, we can't share any details about why the listing was removed, but we'd be glad to answer any other questions you might have. Here's the best way to contact us:
1. Click "Help" at the top of most eBay pages. You may need to sign in.
2. Click "Contact Us."
You'll be asked to describe what's going on, and we'll suggest the best way to get in touch.
We're really sorry about the inconvenience.
Sincerely,
eBay Trust and Safety team

Jeff nice pictures.
I see that you have the air filter cover on your plane. I just yesterday, have a guy making me one. Do you see a difference with it?? I get a lot of missing and sputtering on T&G's with a 65 hp continental on power ups, but once it catches, it is running great.

Yes, in cold air your engine won't sputter/quit on final :-? with the air filter cover on. My hangarmate leaves his on year round to keep the bugs off the filter in the summer....:-)

Here's something you don't see every day, a full size folding bike in a ski plane. I packed it along this AM to avoid a mile walk (round trip) to the cafe where I had breakfast (Wyoming).http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu213/simkot/DSC_0737.jpg As it was I didn't even need it as I found a spot right near the cafe, where the walk was only a couple hundred feet, that all the snowmachines use. I made a couple dozen deep snow mountain landings on the way home, and if I had needed a bike I damn sure had one.http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu213/simkot/DSC_0714.jpg

We just had a few days of 12 to 16" of new snow on top of what was already there, followed by NO WIND and blue skies, so everything was as good as it gets!
The Datums are solid, not real light but what weight there is does the job, I've been bashing them pretty good (pulling up onto my concrete slab, hitting semi submerged antique farm equipment, finding creek beds, jumping unseen drifts, etc.) and so far other then a scratch or two no problems. I'm back to cruising in the 90's since I rerigged a little of the in cruise nose up angle out of them, not too much of course, but now the drag is just like when I have the 26" Airstreaks on near as I can tell.
