FALSE SPARS

A friend was over yesterday looking at my newly covered wing and
we began discussing the false spar subject. He said the purpose
of the 1.75 inch strip added onto the false spar was to hold on the fabric
and my thinking is it is to beef up the false spar. We found a piece of
the stuff and it is just some soft aluminum. I am considering cutting
a strip of .020 2024 T3 and applying that to my experimental cub.
Wouldn't that be better? Comments welcome.

thanks

its to hold the fabric in the reverse curve after gluing down fabric, the old glues eventually dried out and relased the fabric from the aluminum otherwise..(super seam, poly tac, nitrate)

the newer contact cement like glues might not need it...

False spar

In the Stewart "how to" DVDs they talk about the strip as being something to prevent the fabric from pulling off the concave surface of the false spar. He also commented that with the "new glue" it was most likely unnecessary.

Also, I talked Univair into making me 8 foot lengths of PA12 false spar, got them last week and they are great. Next will use the D&E hangers and flap belcrank, move the ail belcrank, and square the wing. Hope to be covering by April.
