Where did the summer go ?? The time is already drawing near when the leaves here in northern Minnesota begin to turn and we gather for a flight up the North shore of Lake Superior to enjoy nature at her finest. Last year 30 some planes snaked there way up the shore on a beautiful Fall day. This year we hope to do the same. The agenda will remain as it has in the past. We'll meet at Two Harbors, MN (KTWM) at 10:00 am on saturday, work our way up the shore for several miles before turning inland for Ely MN (KELO) for fuel, stretch, photos...etc. Then we'll proceed west to Andersons private strip for more photos n friendship. Then back to my place for food n fun, live music(not 'till 4:00 am this year), bon-fire, stories, lies,...etc.

Those who want to get an early start are welcome anytime, though you may get put to work setting up. Friday night we will have a BBQ for the early arrivals. There will be a limited number of event T-shirts this year and will be given to those who flyin on a first come, first served basis. Incentive to come friday !! Wireless internet will be available, though you may have to sit on the deck at the house unless SJ comes up with his bag of tricks to boost the signal to the strip. Some indoor accommadations can be had here on first come first serve basis as well. I can put up five or six at the house and the neighbor (Randy) can put up about the same. There will also be a few campers available. Showers can be had at both places as well. So...come join us for a couple fun filled days in northern Minnesota with old friends and new.

I'm ready...And no silly weddings this year to spoil my weekend.

Yeah, well, I have a 60th b-day to attend.

If'n it was the following weekend, I have to be in Two Harbors for a wedding anyway. Could'a killed two birds with a single stone.

Oh well.

Jon B.

Oh, wait! I don't have an airplane! Why would I care when you have it? :-)

Passed over the Laurentian Divide on Saturday Morning there were quite a few Maples that had turned color. When I returned this afternoon it appeared as though there was quite a few more that had turned. By the 19th the trees should be well on their way to full color. I plan on being there Friday but this year is my turn for weddings.

See you in a week and a couple of days, I'm looking to earn my hat!

Unfortunately for work it looks like I only have Friday to travel up so hopefully weather does not become an issue.

Looking for a lunch/fuel stop on the west side of Minneapolis anybody have a suggestion? my track should be just west of the mode c ring

You can get gas at Winsted (10D). Price should be reasonable, I think. Grass strip 09/27; 3,000 feet or so. Nice place and just outside the 30-mile radius.

I am attempting to organize a filmer and movie camera at Split Rock Lighthouse to incorporate possibly into the DVD that might ?? be made for the flyin like last year. It would be nice to capture the parade of planes going by the lighthouse. Has anyone else been working on this?? If so I'll not pursue it any farther. Eric 218-244-5658

Things are coming together nicely. Sounds like we'll have a nice turnout again this year. I have gotten word from several people who plan to make it this year as well as the usual suspects !! The WX forecast looks very good with sunshine n temps in the upper 60's to low 70's. The colors may be a little behind schedule, but we'll manage to have fun any way, right !! Fly safe, see you in a week !!

I really want to fly up but as some of you know the Sport Cub that I rent Must be in a hanger overnight according to the owner. Is there anyone from Hibbing that is going that would have an empty hanger? or is there anyone in Hibbing who has some space I could rent for the weekend?

If not I'm still going to make it. I'll just drive.

Dave, you guys as dry up there as we are down south? Wondering how your strip is - hard packed and short grass or a bit soft? Remind us how long? Know it was a bit tight with my stock 170B going out to the West, but East would be no problem.

Trying to get the schedule cleared to join you guys.....

Kyle,
I live in Northern MN also and things haven't been real wet this summer.
I was in there last year with my 172 (O-300) and had no problems at all. If I remember correctly I was off the ground by the time I was to Dave's hanger. I was alone but had nearly full fuel. Just giving my opinion and sure Dave will give you an update on conditions.

Hey, SteveE, you wouldn't want to know what I'm operating on :D You wouldn't be interested.

You know, MN radar has special detection on for Okies trying to sneak into the state. Jesse Ventura saw to that before he stepped out of office. Don't try to fly low, cause you will be detected no matter what.

Look forward to seeing if you make it into MN.

Update; Things are pretty well set for a great time here at Side Lake. The weather is looking better than good, food is prepped, beer is on ice, only hitch is the band canceled, but we will have music.

Anyone getting a late start is welcome to head to the strip and wait our arrival. There will be plenty of people around. Make yourself at home.

We will be monitoring n using 122.75 for a freq.

We will park on the south side of the runway behind the orange cones. Keep 'em tight so as to maximize room for planes. We dont get much wind, but please tie down just in case.

Looking forward to seeing everyone and having a great time !!

Wow! What a day.
Left my home strip (6ga0) at 8am today and flew on up here to Jaranson International Airport. Landed well after dark with help from the local LSO...David hisself!

I had planned to arrive before sunset but got caught up visiting with Bill Rusk in Poplar Grove. He has a beautiful home and hangar right on the runway. Bill gave me the cooks tour including his soon to be completed (?) Smith Cub. What a beauty!

All in all I covered 1020sm in 11hrs 5 min...with only one fuel stop.
Looking forward to the Fall Colors Tour...the weather is great and the leaves are turning.

Cheers to you guys, I'm sorry to miss this one - it's a good flyin. Hope ya see some pretty colors and get your thirst quenched! I will NOT miss next year!

My first visit to Northern Mini was a memorable one. It started with a 1035sm flight and a night landing at DJ's. Think I need some halogen landing lights!

Everywhere we flew was beautiful. The Fall Colors Tour was the highlight for sure. There were at least 48 airplanes taking part...everything from a 206 on amphib wips to a Howard DGA 15P (just off floats). We had 2 video cameras and 2 SLR's shooting almost at once thanks to Randy my backseater.

The hangar party on Sat was a great mix of people, home cooked food, and earsplitting, head banging music. SJ is a rock star!

Thank you David, and all your very cool friends, for making us feel so welcome and taking such good care of us. I will definitely be back!

As I write this I am weathered in in Frankfort IN (KFKR) for the night. It was too much to hope for a 2 leg 1 day return.

I will get some pictures up soon.

Great pix Eric, looks like a blast, thanks. How about some pix of the world class party, seems like you said you slept wrapped in a blue tarp last year.

FINALLY home late yesterday... 3 days to get from Fargo to Tulsa... so many bugs I had to fly through squalls to wash the bugs off so I could see!

David, I did find a town smaller than Side Lake, and with how low can you go ceilings boy was I glad to find it. Unfortunatley I got the pleasure of spending 7 full hours in Milnor ND :o

Quite a town, the only Internet available was at the new library and even standing on top of the hanger no cell service so I hiked to the library which looked great only problem is it was Tuesday and it is only open Monday, Wednesday and Fridays half days!
