A bunch of other pilots from different forums are planning on attending the winter carnival and land on the ice runway, any cub.orgers going? I know its no big deal for us to land on ice, but maybe a good time for us northeasters to meet up? Ny boys, john meade from the wad, some mainers? http://www.airnav.com/airport/B18 It is feb 15th.

The sebago fishing derby and winter festival can be a good time as well. A few years ago , they even had an airshow and female wingwalker over the ice runway. This is the pilot landing guidance link. http://www.icefishingderby.com/2009_Fly-in_Guidance.pdf

Hi Phil,
I was up to Shin Pond Camp over the weekend and stopped overnight in China. I believe a few of the folks from the club were over to the derby on Sheepscot. One sounded like Jim Crane.

I am headed to Graham for that week so I will not be over to Alton.

FMD:

Nope wasnt me, I was up to Moosehead Lake mooching venison and other fish house dining specialties in my friends fishhouse. Way too much slush on the big lake, thought I was done for at one point. Never seen so much overflow there before. When the holes are drilled, it the water just gushes up and over. Too much snow weight I guess. When it is freezing up this week the sled tracks are just hell on planes. Im up for Alton Bay Phil, I thought it was Sat the 14. Sanford is having pancake breakfast that day, I thought it was the same day. One of us will have to sort it out this week, dont want to miss the distinguished gentleman from NY.

Also heard thru the grapevine the locals are cooking Sat noon at Old Town. Missed the last one danged snowstorm.

A couple other forums indicating the 15th as well as this link from alton. http://www.alton.nh.gov/calendardetail.asp?ID=2685 . Anyhow, would be good to hook up with you guys. It would be nicer to go to the pierces with john, but that isnt going to happen this year. I havent been able to do much flying , so really itching to get out. I think dan dufault, jim rogers and douten plus others were over to sheepscot.

it's definitely the 15th - I did a couple of google searches a month ago and somehow got the date wrong. I'm going to bring every pilot in Maine if I can - so expect a crowd.
Now we need a firm date on the Dunn Boys flyin - last I heard it was last weekend in Feb.

So it was you. Came down from camp at Shin on Sunday to watch the game and the fellow that was running the derby for the club was telling me there was a gaggle of Supercubs and stuff up there.
Sorry I am going to miss Alton bay but I am in Graham.

keith Hey keith any tie downs at twitchells? I am thinking about bringing the 185 down there for awhile. With those wheel penetration skis my strip is a bear to turn around the plane and get out. Would be much easier to leave down there for spring flying. They got a pre heater u can rent? Really miss the cub for ski flying, it's coming along though.

talked to Phil today after getting back from Alton Bay. Ice is in great shape, 80' wide I believe with a taxiway on the east side. Monitered 122.8 on the way SOUTH. Had a 30knot headwind the entire way SOUTH and guys coming up from Conn., RI, MA and NH are landing to the north after they have experienced a significant tailwind. If you decide to go to Alton Bay, PLEASE overfly the lake and note the direction of wind from the several American flags in the cove. The guys in mooneys and cherokee 140 treated me like a black sheep today because my landing and takeoff were into the wind. Hard to believe that the blind is following the blind. I think I'll pack a cooler of beer next weekend to watch this show!

I know exactly what you are talking about.I have seen it many times especially at fly-ins where one after another will operate contrary to the wind.At a recent safety seminar on Take-offs and Landings sponsored by a well known aviation association I brought this very subject up to the presenter. Not one time in the whole seminar did he bring up the subject of being aware of the wind and he just kind of blew it off like it really didn't matter! This after showing films of planes landing long, running into trees at the end of the runway because they were not climbing, etc.NEVER mentioned the windsock at all.

Hey Tim,
I believe the lake is about 20 miles long. There must be 300 feet of snow on it somewhere for you to land. It has a designator B18 so if you look it up on Airnav the snow strip should be identified.
I am on the way to Grahamon Friday and from what I understand after 81* on Saturday my chances of ski flying are .....nill :drinking:

I suggest Be there for sure BY or AT 11 AM sharp at Alton bay sounds great - the warmest part of the day will be 11AM to 2 PM. Official show up time is 10:30AM to 11AM.

That little restaurant sure isn't going to feed us all very quickly - if we split up the items - we could probably set up a stove & cook egg sandwiches or hot dogs and hamburgers pretty easily out on the lake - something to think about anyway?

My only regret of the day--and it is a small one--is not having thrown a pair of hockey skates in the back of Scouter's Scout.

It was total ice. Really something to see. Great people, good food and awesome fun watching the planes land on glare ice.

True. I love hanging out with you guys because SC.org people are full of special talents. Who knew that NY Tim was such an accomplished photographer? Or that Pzinck is terrified of horses?

I think we're going to have to get T. Michaud II to start posting. His new nickname is HedgeHopper.

Pzinck is starting a second career as a creative guy for an ad agency. When we went to lunch he came up with the Best T-Shirt Slogan Ever.

I'd like to extend special thanks to Super Cliff, who gave us an aerial tour of Sebago Lake and let us in on the true legend of "Boner Island". Such a special place.

And when Super Cliff told the story of Boner Island Scouter kept that ball centered---where it was for the entire flight and I need to learn how to do that someday--despite the fact that we were laughing so hard I thought we might scare the people in the ice shacks....

Way too much fun. :)

I was thinking early like 10 due to my 140 being a rather slow airplane it's at least a 1 hour 15 minute flight from Vermont. And I don't want to stay too long. Does anyone know what kinds of activities are planned? I ask because my wife is interested in only the destination while I am happy with the flight to and from the destination.

See ya all there.

Axle nuts....

And Zinck, as far as I'm concerned you will always need a big wheelbarrow to carry yours around, plastic, brass or otherwise....I've seen you fly!

Does anyone know what orientation the runways will be? I don't want to fly over without knowing what the winds are in relation to the runway direction. Thanks.

i also got an email about the runway condition...

Not bad. Not much rain, mostly snow which we plowed off. I also
groomed the ice two nights ago with a heavy drag. Not to say it's a
basketball floor, but not bad.

See ya there

fun flying today - great to see you guys. Where the heck where the rest of you!!

I didn't plow my runway - I had about 6 inches fluff - very interesting take off - took a lot more runway! I was glad I didn't have a passenger. When returning on landing I had to land from the north and picked up some major speed dropping over the 50 foot trees - i was really burning up runway and planted it right down in the fluff and wow it knocked my speed way down and soon I was stopped - not even the slightest hint of wanting to nose over. Gotta love those 31 inch bush wheels.

I arrived at the flyin early -about 8:30 AM - no one was there and it was dead calm. I announced I was 3 miles out and the organizer got on the radio and said hello. I came in high and slipped it down like a rock - he said wow that was neat!! I said watch this & landed on the runway and road all the way down on one wheel - he thought that was pretty neat.

Next I was off to my parents place on the lake - just around the corner - I landed and had coffee with them. 10AM it was back to the ice flyin to see if anyone was there yet - by now the wind was kicking up. It was a good cross wind to the runway - so a little challenging.

When leaving the flyin once again I road up on my left wheel - however the wind was from the right - this was difficult - i flew around and on the next pass rode down the runway up on the right wheel - that worked out much better with the wind coming from the right.

When I got home I was actually warn out from having so much fun!!

My 19 month old son is nuts about super cubs. I have a bunch of airplane DVD's - he's only interested in those about super cubs - it's quite comical.

I look forward to the next flyin!

Wow, SuperCliff and Tom in the same picture! Cool!

Was very windy up here in the other half of the state today. Not much flying going on despite the lovely blue skies.

Looks like someone discovered the joys of a pressure ridge on Sebago. They're lucky the car didn't go right through. Where I grew up they used to lose a lot of vehicles and sometimes people due to the pressure ridges on the lakes. Bad stuff!

The weather here in Vermont was low ceilings and snow this morning. Then I saw the winds aloft were 40 knots from the West. With my slow old Cessna 140 with a top speed of 85 knots, it would have been a very slow flight back at around 45 knots. I'm glad to see some pilots got a chance to play on the ice. It sure looks like there was some fun going on there. Those pictures of the car almost in the lake are pretty cool too. I guess I'll just have to try another time.

Sorry to miss you guys Sat. Had to take the wife down to UCONN to get her hugs on the freshman girl who is sapping my wallet. Got to hit the Boston Boat show on the way home so all was not lost. Lets try to plan something in March when the wx warms up a bit.
