Lessee... Most of my semi-adult life I fronted my own band. Singer, songwriter... Blues with a country twist, soul and rock and roll... "Americana" is the term used to describe the mixture of styles and influences. To support my musical habits, I did all kinds of jobs to keep my head above water. I worked in restaurants and ran the kitchen at the old Heartbreak Hotel in Providence, RI for awhile. All kinds of odd jobs... Did some hysterical restoration work (my first restoration and painting job the oldest house in RI according to genealogical records circa 1650). Did that for awhile then became a parent (single Mom) and had to find something more compatible with raising a small child. I became a professional seamstress and built props for the local repertory theater. I sewed many miles of seams and eventually earned enough to move to Nashville, TN. I had been working with a famous drummer in New England who urged me to move to Nashville (he'd recently been re-located there). Unfortunately, the night I did my last gig in New England, he passed away quite suddenly from a brain aneurysm. Instead of singing at his wedding and putting together a band with some of Nashville's finest, I sang at his funeral on Christmas Eve. That was a very sad year. I was adrift in a new place without a band for the first time in many years and trying to start over again from scratch. A fine songwriter by he name of Walter Hyatt took me under his wing and gave me my first gig in town. Things were starting to look up for awhile, then he was killed when the Valuejet he was on crashed into the Florida Everglades. I continued doing stage work and started learning how to play the guitar. Met some very fine people over the years and eventually got an offer to move to Florida to help start up a new record company (in a fly-in neighborhood of all places!). A levee on the river broke, flooding the entire property and that dream went out the window. I've got one recording project of original songs I hope to finish up someday if this airplane thing doesn't get in the way. I stayed on to clean up and caretake the property and when the property eventually sold, moved to some rundown living quarters built into the end of an old hangar on the neighborhood runway. I am restoring the apartment and caretaking the rest of the property in exchange for a place to live (I love it!). I earn extra income taking care of horses and watching other places when the owners are away. Watching all the airplanes take off and land outside my windows re-ignited an old dream of learning to fly. I started training in an old SUPERcub at the field and eventually got my private flying ALL kinds of different airplanes. Flying acro now and writing the occasional magazine article. Hope to keep earning new ratings and someday teach, ferry airplanes, tow gliders or drop jumpers to help support my new habit :D

AP/IA...21 years working for the airlines, and counting down like so many others in the industry, January 09. They took our pension so I'm working toward the 65 point plan...age and years of service for free flight.

Started a maintenance shop at our local airport 4 years ago, then bought another this past spring. They are doing well. I enjoy the work and continued challenges.

One of the coolest thing I got to do this past year was, signing off an annual on a J3 and the airworthiness, ETOPS check on an A330 all in the same day. There's an awful lot of aviation between those planes.

Well I liked to say I made a living flying airplanes but I am in the majority of those who now don't. I was a 20 + year maintenance supervisor and decided to put my AP/IA to work and turned my hobby into a full time job for 10 years.Due to varying issues with fuel cost, insurance, and other related cost,GA has definitely slowed down in our community so when I was offered my old job back I took it. I still get nights and weekends to work on customers airplanes. I am working on my PA-12 which I have been working on for over 4 years and can see a light at the end of the tunnel and hope to fly it this winter..... Thanks to all the great info here on SC.org I have had alot of questions answered without posting. I will try to post pictures of my project.......Don

I was a corporate pilot for 30 years, flight instructing on the side for fun. Switched to EMS helicopter flying in a Bell 407 for the local Level I Trauma Center 2 years ago. Very challenging but also very rewarding. Now I have a life with time off to fly Super Cubs. I work a 7 day on/7 day off schedule and live 10 minutes from the base. I get to sleep in my own bed every night or day. My wife and I own a horse-drawn carriage business in Tennessee's oldest town, Jonesborough. She also has a wedding chapel there, doing 120 weddings a year. 60 now, plan to fly professionally another 6-7 years.

Still living the dream.... getting paid to fly airplanes.

In 25th year with world-wide manufacturing company (we make most of those circles on the ground, among other things you see every day but don't have a clue who makes them) as mgr/pilot of a corporate jet. Used to average 12 days of flying a month... now sometimes make 12 day trips (most recent was 16 days around the world, the hard way to get home). Still few complaints except for the airliners that get in our way in the upper 30s and 40s after they discovered they could save fuel up there. Would rather be flying below 400' (or 40') in my yet to be completed experimental wide-body Cub. Fortunately, I have a friend who lets me keep "cub current" in his.

Looking forward to retirement, but am always thankful to be healthy and to have a good job that I enjoy.

This is all quite interesting. So many different people, and so few duplications of 'jobs'.
I think the best job description goes to someone like Vickie who can say:

I wake up early every morning excited about each day!

Today I'm putting on my "trail maintenance tech." hat, a few of us need to go check/clear some of our mtn access trails for the snowmachines. The mtn-tops have a light dusting of snow & the lake is 'steaming' in the mornings so it won't be long now!!

Well, I make part of my living flying airplanes... I got just started later than most of y'all..
2002 - Ran a flight school for native Alaskans
2003 - Carried my first paying passenger at 64 years old.
Next birthday I'll be 70 and still flying for an Alaska 135 operation.

And I still have my Night Vision and Sports Optics business.

All this after 8 years in the US Air Force and 35 years with IBM Corporation - retired in 1991 and again in 2000.

Could I interest you in 28 more..?? An even 100 would sound really impressive. Jet fuel has gone up, don't ya know? (as they say in Minneesoda) I've never been able to show any income on my budget. Maybe they would give me the commission. Might be enough for an engine and avionics on my Cub.

You must have some old ones from the blue V..... our sales guys often comment that it hurts new sales because the old run so well. Pivots are only about 20% of our business now, but the market worldwide is still very strong.

Yep, lots of the blue V's, and many before that series came out, but we've replaced over a dozen in the past few years with the new precision machines. As land prices escalate, it becomes possible to upgrade to longer pivots and to add corner arms onto existing machines.

A couple years ago, V gave away a nice spun aluminum flag pole with the purchase of a new pivot... we joked that we bought an $80k flag pole and got the pivot for free. Hey, you should score a couple of those for the shelter at New Holstein! :) and a few of those nice street lights that they build also!

I'll get on that. Transport will be the big issue. Guess I'd have to drive my gas-guzzling truck to get them there. If you Google "Naper 28" you will see three of them that I arranged to donate to the memorial honoring an accident that killed the most pilots at one time during WWII.

Flag poles go up easy.... the street lights would take some planning.

Had a newspaper route as a kid. Went to work at the neighborhood hardware store which led to a 7 year stint at a large lumber yard/home center. After my Dad got his pilot's license I started getting bitten by the airplane bug and went to A&P school in 1990. A field trip to the Dallas/Ft. Worth Wing of the Confederate Air Force Hanger sealed my fate. I spent every weekend working there until I got my A&P license. Spent 6 months working at a flight school until I got hired at Ezell Aviation rebuilding Warbirds. After working for the Ezell's for 5 years I got my IA and went out on my own working on general aviation for the first several years. Now I specialize in antique and classic airplanes, maintaining a few and rebuilding.

I sit in a chair for "no more than" 8 hours per day during my 14 hour duty day. The rest of my day is spent bent over flinging all manner of big, little, usually heavy and bulky things in and out of the Beaver, 206 or Cub that I happen to be flying that day, on floats or wheels or skis; and when the weather is crappy and the "weekend warrior" isn't flying and I kinda wish I wasn't and probably shouldn't be flying it doesn't mean I'm parked--it just means I get the dubious pleasure of flying all the live long day around fog, rain/snow, in high and gusty winds in and out of off airport locations in Alaska.
I have no traditional retirement plan nor do I have benefits; but I have the supreme pleasure of getting paid to do exactly what I want to be doing (most of the time...:)) and doing it in my Favorite Place in the World...Home.

I'm heading south where it's warm for a few weeks to let things freeze up here so I can fly skis.
